LUELLA PAIKIN [s]. Warrington, England, 1896 – New York City, 1969. She studied with Marie Brema in Manchester as well as in Italy and began her operatic career in 1920 at the Naples Teatro San Carlo. There she appeared in 1922 in the premiere of Franchetti’s opera Glauco. 1923 marked her La Scala debut in The Magic Flute under Toscanini. After having sung in various Italian houses, she returned to England and became a member of the British National Opera Company and the Carl Rosa Company. She subsequently appeared in operetta, on the radio (both on the BBC and in the U.S.) as well as undertaking further occasional operatic performances, including Lakmé at the Paris Opéra-Comique and Gilda in a 1938 Covent Garden Rigoletto. She was married for a period to tenor Angelo Minghetti. She moved to New York City in 1941 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1946, in 1943 wedding chemical engineer Joseph Bernham, ten years her junior. However she managed to catch up and even surpass her husband’s age by declaring her birth year as 1911. She evidently had little career success here. 2924. 12” SS vinyl HMV DB 952 [Cc8542-3]. CLARA SERENA [c]. Lobethal, So. Australia, 1890-Aldersgate Village, Felixtow, 1972. She studied at the Royal College of Music in London, receiving a diploma in 1911. Studying further in Italy and Germany, she took the name Clara Serena in 1913 (having been born Clara Serena Hulda). She returned to Australia at the outbreak of W.W. I and wed her accompanist in 1917. Her great success began upon her return to London in 1922, where she sang leading roles in Covent Garden as well as in Vienna, Berlin and Paris. She had a wide vocal range and exceptional linguistic ability. She was also recognized for her “tall, graceful stature and magnificent physique [which] enabled her to withstand the rigorous training needed to reach the peak of her career”. A tour of the U.S. was planned for 1939, but the outbreak of W.W. II foiled her plans and she at that point retired. (JAN) JOZEF STERKENS [t]. Antwerp, 1893-Antwerp, 1952. His parents, who owned a laundry, sent Jozef to the Normal School in Ghent to study to become a teacher. Among other classes, he studied music with Emiel Hullebroeck, who recommended that his beautiful tenor voice be cultivated. However Sterkens’ financial situation made voice lessons impossible, so he continued his studies to become an art teacher. He was mobilized during the First World War and was decorated four times for his service. He then worked as an art teacher but was finally offered an opportunity to study voice. In 1927, he made his first big success as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with the Royal Flemish Opera, also appearing successfully as a concert singer. In 1935 he became Director of the Royal Flemish Opera and after that point sang only on rare occasions. Through various problems he was arrested as a collaborator following the liberation of Antwerp in 1944 and was imprisoned (for the first two weeks in the lion’s cage of the Antwerp Zoo with other collaborators).

GIL VALERIANO [t]. El Vergel, Alicante 1896 - New York 1942 A pupil of Giulio Crimi, Ferruccio Corradetti and then Frank LaForge. At the period his two private recordings were made (1927-28), the music journals were crowded with Valeriano testimonials, such as this anonymous paeon of prase: “It has been my privilege to hear Gil Valeriano, the young tenor, several times…. Each time I carried away a feeling of wanting to hear him again. I asked myself afterwards why, and the answers were there: His voice is of lovely, sympathetic quality, smoothly and easily produced. He is capable of exquisite finesse and can swell a tone to a marvellous, mellow fortissimo, diminishing it into a pianissimo of ravishing quality, a thing W. J. Henderson , famous critic, quickly perceived and enjoyed. Then too, his programs fascinate me because he knows just which songs suit his voice and he chooses them carefully from among the finest in song literature. His diction is equally clear in all languages. To me he is is the most satisfying tenor on the concert platform

BIANCA VOLPINI [ms]. Born in Boston, Volpini studied at the Academy of Notre Dame in Roxbury. She later enrolled in the New England Conservatory, Boston. Her debut appears to have been at the Teatro Cressoni in Como as Leonora in La Favorita, 1906. She is described as “young, beautiful and unscrupulous.” “She captured many men’s hearts.” While she was engaged at the Rossini Theater in Venice, 1908, a dispute broke out over her which practically led to a duel. She was active on both sides of the Atlantic, singing Amneris at the Princess Theater in Montréal and also appearing in New York City at the Academy of Music, Providence, R.I., and Ottawa. Her career seems to have ended around 1911. – Internet. 2085. 11” Brown It. Odeon 37420/37444 [Xm791/Xm792]. IL TROVATORE: Stride la vampa / IL

Lady MAUD WARRENDER [c]. 1870-1945. Wife of baronet and Rear-admiral Sir George J. Scott Warrender (1860-1917), whom Lady Maud married in 1894. She had a voice of rare power and charm. She was never happier than when giving her services on behalf of deserving charities. There is no doubt that, had she been born and bred in another sphere than her own, she would have become a serious rival to the leading operatic singers of the day. Following the death of her husband, she made a home with contralto Marcia Van Dresser. In addition to her vocal talent, Lady Maud was known as one of the most influential patrons of music in the early twentieth century. Her life, lived very much in the public gaze, but with whole areas that were kept so discreetly private that it was a perilous path between respectability and scandal. At 6’1” she was just three inches shorter than Clara Butt. – Internet quotes

HELEN YORKE [s]. Much of the press activity in Maine soprano Helen Yorke’s life took place in 1920, including an Aeolian Hall concert debut in March, 1920. She had previously appeared in opera in Naples. She wed one Misha Applebaum, president of a corporation dealing in precious metals. Shortly after the wedding, as Mrs. Applebaum, she made an Aeolian Hall song recital debut. There were subsequent rumors of domestic and financial trouble. Mr. and Mrs. Appelbaum were hospitalized “having taken ‘by mistake,’ … bichloride of mercury.” Both survived, and Miss Yorke reverted to her maiden name. She capped the year with a Carnegie Hall recital. Subsequently she is found listed in occasional New York performances in concert and on the radio. An appearance in a 1939 broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions on the Air (see below) is also noted. From 1940-49 she frequently appeared and recorded with Elie Siegmeister’s American Ballad Singers. A number of clippings are included with the first record below.
