Information Services
Construct a Search Statement using truncation
By truncating a word, you broaden your search and ensure that you retrieve variations of the word. For example,
autis* would find the following:
autism autistic
Truncation symbols used in databases differ.
Information Services
Phrase Searching
Some databases will recognise two words together as a phrase. For example classroom management
Some databases require a phrase to be specified with quotation marks. For example “classroom management”
Always check the databases’ help guides / search tips
Information Services
Construct a Search Statement using Wildcards
Wildcard symbols usually represent one or more letters. You can use wildcards to find alternative spellings. For example, organi?ation would find journal articles containing organisation or organization
Always check the databases’ help guides / search tips
Information Services
Sample search statements –
autis* and early childhood and early intervention
autis* and early childhood and intervention
autis* or aspersers and early intervention and early childhood
Remember there is seldom only one definitive search statement – you may need to try different words and ways of putting them together.

Refereed or Peer-Reviewed Articles
To ensure that articles submitted to academic journals are accurate and reliable, a group of subject experts will read an article and recommend its publication, revision or rejection.
This process is known as ‘peer-review’ or ‘refereeing’ and it guarantees that published articles are of a high quality.
Information Services
Identifying Peer-Reviewed JournalsCheck if the database you are searching allows you to limit you search to scholarly journals or peer-reviewed journals. For example, the database ProQuest Education Journals will allow you to limit your results to peer-reviewed publications by ticking the corresponding box.
Look up the journal name in Ulrich’s Periodical Directory (available via the Library Databases) to see if it is refereed / peer-reviewed.
