He took us through his remarkable life to date, his story starting when he crashed his MBG GT many years ago in Port Moresby. Eric received spinal cord injuries which turned his life in a whole new direction when he was inspired by the athletes training in his rehabilitation hospital. He had become lost in rehab and did not know who he was anymore so seeing these athletes and joining in with them eventually allowed him to re-establish his identity. Leaving the rehab centre he went to university where he studied human movement which he said really helped him in his athletic endeavours. He excelled in shot put and discus winning 26 gold medals and breaking 14 world records. He also met his wife Julie who also represented Australia in Wheelchair sports and actually asked her to marry him after only 13 days together!! Eric actually started his volunteer/service career as a Lion in Brisbane before coming to Adelaide and joining Rotary. He has twice been President of Adelaide Parks and at District level served 2 years as an Assistant Governor. He has an MBE, an Advance Australia Award, is a Paul Harris Fellow with Sapphire Pin and in 2007 was made a Life Member of wheelchair Sports SA. In addition Eric is a gentleman and a truly enlightening human being......Eric Russell. Sgt Kirsty’s game brought the bang back to the meeting when she made us all pop as many balloons as we could to find the Winning Tag inside one of them. Well done on a fantastic start to our games for the year Kirsty, I am sure we will see plenty innovative ideas from you throughout the year. See you Tuesday, President Greg Schuetze Australian History 1799 - Matthew Flinders first sights and names Red Cliff Point, now Redcliffe, in Queensland. We had a really inspirational speaker with us on

Tuesday morning in Past District Governor of

District 9500 Eric Russell. He took us through his

remarkable life to date, his story starting when he

crashed his MBG GT many years ago in Port

Moresby. Eric received spinal cord injuries which

turned his life in a whole new direction when he

was inspired by the athletes training in his

rehabilitation hospital. He had become lost in

rehab and did not know who he was anymore so

seeing these athletes and joining in with them

eventually allowed him to re-establish his identity.

Leaving the rehab centre he went to university

where he studied human movement which he

said really helped him in his athletic endeavours.

He excelled in shot put and discus winning 26

gold medals and breaking 14 world records. He

also met his wife Julie who also represented

Australia in Wheelchair sports and actually asked

her to marry him after only 13 days together!!

Eric actually started his volunteer/service career

as a Lion in Brisbane before coming to Adelaide

and joining Rotary.

He has twice been President of Adelaide Parks

and at District level served 2 years as an Assistant

Governor. He has an MBE, an Advance Australia

Award, is a Paul Harris Fellow with Sapphire Pin

and in 2007 was made a Life Member of

wheelchair Sports SA. In addition Eric is a

gentleman and a truly enlightening human

being......Eric Russell.

Sgt Kirsty’s game brought the bang back to the

meeting when she made us all pop as many

balloons as we could to find the Winning Tag

inside one of them. Well done on a fantastic start

to our games for the year Kirsty, I am sure we will

see plenty innovative ideas from you throughout

the year.

See you Tuesday,

President Greg Schuetze

You may remember at the Change Over Lunch that Graham Holcroft was awarded the ‘Avenues of Service

Citation’. We never had the citation in our possession, but it has finally arrived. Graham received this award

for his contribution to:

Club Service

Vocational Service

Community Service

International Service

New Generations Service

Well Done Graham

• Greg, for putting in the last Bulletin that Carol led her committee in a robust discussion. She was at

home sick, and didn't make the meeting!

• Greg, for assuming that the sergeant of the week 'knew who she was' and not putting Ronda's name

in the Bulletin.

• Mark Thompson, for sending the Bulletin to the wrong Steve Hayter on a G Mail account rather than

President Steve Hayter of Kent Town.

• Ronda, for complaining about the plates not being heated at breakfast.

• Chris G, for his ums and ahs before the invocation.

• John & Licaria, for arriving after the gong.

• Kevin, for wearing Shirley's name badge, and Shirley, for giving it to him.

• The Men's Porridge Club. All of us have been members for weeks (or years!) and have never been

invited to join the gang, whereas new exchange student Carlo showed up to his first meeting and

was immediately inducted.

• Bronwyn who now has a Sportspower page on Facebook, but doesn't know how to log in and access

it.

• Shirley, for her phone ringing in the middle of the meeting (John's phone call fine was waived as he

gave me a valid excuse!)

• Plus a fine to everyone who didn't watch the amazing, educational Australian television show 'The

Shire' last night (and that includes me!).

Congratulations to Greg Schuetze who was the only tipper with any faith in the Gold Coast against

Richmond. Also congrats to Chris Gascoine & Matt Davis who foresaw Sydney’s win in the West.

Whilst it elevated them to the upper parts of the ladder, they couldn’t overcome the RC Morialta

club blitz, which saw Kym Davis edge out Alan Cushway and Peter Mayer for the big weekly prize.

Kim – your prize money has been despatched via David Lloyd who assures me he is good at

delivering things to their final destination. Your challenge will be to intercept the money before he

buries it (or hands it to the club Sergeant).

There are only 8 rounds to go. This week’s prize goes to the best tipper who gets 8 correct (and

only 8). In other words, make sure you tip one game wrong (which shouldn’t be hard this week!!).

If no-one gets exactly 8 correct, the prize will jackpot to the next round. GOOD LUCK.

MARK THIS DATE DOWN IN YOUR DIARIES

Please start thinking about some cunning way in which you can extract prizes for this year’s quiz

from someone that you do business with.

All commercial donors will be listed and distributed throughout the venue.

Noel Speck has agreed to MC again this year, despite his move to Murray Bridge.

Maybe you can also be table captain for a table of 10.

See attached flyer and use it to go begging for prizes.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise and in particular to encourage and foster

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by every Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve

society.

The application of the ideal service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life.

The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth? Is it Fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

For good food, good fellowship And the opportunity to serve through Rotary

…we give thanks.
