The trouble with today’s desktops

On the one hand, there’s the need to keep the existing desktop environment efficient, secure and running.

This can feel like an overwhelming task.

Operating Systems and applications can be difficult to deploy, manage, upgrade and patch.

There are simple version updates – and then a full-blown platform migration comes along, for example to Windows 7.

Security and compliance requirements change often and take resources away from more innovative projects. Meanwhile, IT budgets and headcounts continue to fall.

Desktops play such a critical role in today’s workplace, yet every day they seem to become more complicated and costly to manage.

On the other hand, there are workforce demands to use new devices and applications, to increase productivity.

Your end-users are bringing in their own devices – smartphones and tablets – that they expect to use in the working environment.

Increasingly, they’re using cloud-based, SaaS applications to share files and work faster.

They want to access their desktop across different devices, in different locations – so that they can work on the move or at home.

It’s all proven to increase productivity for the business, making it more agile and competitive.

Wouldn’t it be great to enable such a modern working environment?

1. The Desktop Dilemma

How can you address both of these requirements? The answer is Desktop Modernization…

Addressing IT and End-User Requirements

Desktop modernization provides a much more efficient IT environment that lets you effectively manage, secure and deploy desktops today while setting you up to better control your environment as it evolves into the future.

Virtualization is the key.

By separating the OS, applications and user data from the desktop hardware and moving them to the data center, the IT department can effectively deliver and manage them as individual components.

As a result, it’s much easier to deploy, upgrade and manage desktops.

So your end-user can access to the same desktop, from various devices or locations. They could be on a thin client, laptop, desktop or smartphone. They could be at work, home or on the road.

2. Desktop Modernization

Modernize desktops and applications…

…by moving them into the cloud.

Benefits for IT

Desktop modernization will give you:

Reduced costsVirtualization simplifies and centralizes desktop management. So resources can be shifted from maintenance tasks to more innovative projects. Plus, there are significant reductions in management and operation expenses to be made over time.

More control, easier compliance Enhanced role-based admin and centralized desktop security policies give you more control, right across your user infrastructure.

You can easily meet software compliance guidelines and ensure all desktops and applications are up to date – from one screen. Additionally, you can maintain regulatory compliance by keeping information under control in your datacenter.

Higher availabilityThe flexibility of virtualization allows you to deal with back-ups, server admin and failures without interrupting desktop and application availability. Freeing the “desktop” from desktop hardware also gives users a highly available environment that keeps running even after they spill coffee on their thin client.

An easier path to Windows 7Get the benefits of upgrading to Windows 7 without endless testing and legacy application issues, separate and encapsulate the components to deliver as a service from the datacenter. This accelerates your adoption time while cutting your costs in half.

Board-level approval and end-user satisfactionA leap in end-user productivity, lower costs and greater business agility makes desktop modernization popular across the whole organization.

Benefits to Business

There are sound business reasons to take desktop modernization to the board:

Greater agilityFor example, the ability to easily deploy new end-user desktops and manage them centrally means you can react quickly to market changes, scaling resources up or down on the fly to meet changing business needs.

More competitive edgeA modern desktop environment allows you to adopt new applications and services quickly, so you can gain competitive edge fast.

A happier, more productive workforceEnd-users benefit from a desktop that’s more reliable and available in more places, giving them more time and flexibility to work.

Benefits for the End-User

Desktop Modernization gives end-users more reliable and secure desktops, but it’s the greater working flexibility that they’ll really notice:

More productivityAnytime anywhere access allows end-users to be more productive, a modern desktop architecture means less downtime from conflicts, and improved support means that any issues are resolved faster.

Greater freedomThe ability to use a variety of different devices to access corporate assets means users can even leverage personal devices.

Less frustrationBetter desktop and application availability means end-users can spend more time on their core role and less on the phone to IT support.

The benefits are clear, but how do you make them a reality? Here’s how to implement desktop modernization…
