The student will understand: •Diseases impact modern societies differently. •Disease can cause the extinction of modern societies. •Cultural ideas will impact how disease is recognized, accepted and treated within modern societies. •Diseases can be man-made or found in nature. •A variety of people/groups work together to help fight disease across the globe.

The student will know: •Key terms including but not limited to: o Pandemic o Epidemic o Communicable disease o Deficiency o Environmental factors o Immunity o Biological Warfare o NGO (non-governmental organization) •How disease spreads between cultures. •Ways that cultures address the impacts of disease.

• Diseases impact modern societies differently.– HIV/AIDS• Labor Shortage in Africa• Orphaned Children

– Bubonic Plague• Labor Shortage

– Limits economic growth» Agricultural» Industrial

– Ends Feudal System– People have power

• Less Religious– Small Pox• Extinction of civilizations• Lose territory

• Disease can cause the extinction of modern societies. – Spanish Conquistadors spread small pox to the

Aztecs• Entire civilizations are wiped out• on other hand – allows European Powers to conquer

new land

• Disease can cause the extinction of modern societies. – Bubonic Plague (Black Death)• Middle Ages – peaks in 14th Century• 1/3rd of Europe = DEAD!

– Protection• Lock yourselves inside• Burned down villages• Believed a punishment by god

– RATS!!! …technically fleas on rats• Poor Sanitation

• Cultural ideas will impact how disease is:– Recognized, Accepted, Treated• Bubonic Plague

– Incorrectly recognized and treated» believed to be a religious curse

• HIV/AIDS– STDs are not always accepted

• Obesity– Not Recognized

» Sign of Wealth – Not Accepted

» Personal problem

• Avian Flu– US Quick to recognize and treat

» no social stigma

Diseases can be man-made or found in nature.

Man Made Natural• Viruses, parasites, bacteria– Cold, Influenza, etc.– Disease that have always

existed

• Lifestyle: Stress, lack of sleep & exercise, diet, etc

• Environment: excess sun• Chemical exposure
