News & Announcements

We all know the expression “You learn something new every day’. I think there’s something to it. A few weeks ago, Father Carlos asked me about our Eucharistic Processions at St. Michael Parish. I had to ponder that question. I certainly knew about our procession on Holy Thursday, but that was the extent of my familiarity. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember hearing about a Eucharistic Procession, but I don’t think I have ever been a participant. I immediately turned to the internet to learn more about Eucharistic Processions.

Before I knew it, Father Carlos was excitedly planning for a Eucharistic Processions on June 14. He rummaged around in our liturgical supplies and was unable to find a canopy. Not to be discouraged, he was on the phone recruiting a seamstress. Before the week was over, a canopy had been designed, poles had been purchased, and Father Carlos had met in the parking lot with several ladies who kindly agreed to construct a canopy for our procession.

After the past few months of challenges, canceled plans and disappointments, I’m glad we can look forward to something new and special. On the Feast of Corpus Christi, June 14, at the end of 11:30 Mass, we will have a procession of the Blessed Sacrament, displayed in the monstrance. The procession will leave the church, proceed to the Angelus Center parking lot and then return to the Church for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please plan to join us.

Wendy F. Hinerman

For confession, please follow these guidelines:

1) Please do not sit in any pew except the very last row against the back wall.

2) There are no “face-to-face” confessions. Please only use the door marked “CONFESSIONAL.” There is a chair on that side so that you can sit if you so choose.

3) Please maintain at least 6 feet between you and other persons.

4) The first person in line should stand by the sign hanging on the wall that says “#1”

5) Likewise for the second, third, and fourth persons next to the signs so marked.

6) All others can wait in line by sitting in the pew against the back wall.

7) Inside the confessional, there are sanitizing wipes. Please use them as necessary to disinfect.

8) After your confession, please do not sit in any pews.

Confessions are heard from 3-4pm on Saturdays. As always, people may make an appointment by calling the office or the rectory or by emailing one of the priests.

Thank you.

News & Announcements

Pentecost is always a special celebration. This year, there was an additional element of joy as we welcomed new members to our church! For many months, our RCIA members have learned about the Catholic faith and prepared for rebirth. On Pentecost Sunday we welcomed Elijah and Aaron Chapman, Jon-Erik Gilot, Amy McKenna, Scott Millard and Joe Laughman.

We extend our gratitude to our RCIA catechists; Lou Volpe, Rob and Peggy Krall and Father Martin. Thank you for teaching the foundation of our faith, sharing your reflections on Catholicism and helping our candidates develop a deep and fulfilling relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ.

RCIA Candidates: Biographies

1. Jon-Erik Gilot is the Director of Archives and Records for the Diocese

of Wheeling/Charleston. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His mother, Joni Elerick, lives in St. Clairsville; Jon-Erik lives with his wife Heather (nee Nau) and daughters Liliana and Emilia, both students at St. Michael Parish School. Jon-Erik is interested in reading and writing, especially relating to History. He says that Fr. Martin has been a wonderful lecturer and enjoys attending RCIA classes. He and Lou Volpe have much in common, too, being lifelong Cleveland Browns fans. Good Luck with that, Jon-Erik!

2. Amy Renee McKenna, an employee in the Receiving Department at

Cabela’s Distribution Center, is the daughter of Danny and Peggy Godfrey who live in Bethlehem. She also has a sister Kimmie who lives in the great city of Cleveland. She and her husband Paul have a daughter, Amiah, 14, and a son, Aidan, 13. Her interests are helping at her children’s schools and watching them play sports or music; crafts, plants, and flowers, gardening, music, and movies. Generally quiet but a careful listener, Amy enjoys RCIA class. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Volpe, Fr. Martin, and Fr. Carlos for teaching me more about the Catholic faith and for guiding me during this journey.”

3. Scott Martin Millard is a Wheeling, West Virginia native and lives in Sherrard in Marshall County. He is the Director of Purchasing and

Fleet Management for Diocese of Wheeling/Charleston. His family consists of two grown daughters, Ashley and Amber, and one brother and two sisters. Scott enjoys playing as well as collecting guitars, but also enjoys admiring and researching European Automobiles, traveling, football, and cooking. He believes that the RCIA program at St. Michael’s is excellent and “well-instructed” and he looks forward to class on Sunday.

4. Joseph (Joe) Laughman, born in Wheeling, WV, is a graduate of Martins Ferry High School. He is a Casino Manager at the Wheeling

Island Racetrack and Gaming Center. When he is not working, Joe is engaged in classical studies: Greek language, history and culture. Joe’s mother is Lillian Laughman and he has a young daughter, Julia. Joe enjoys the RCIA classes, saying “The classes give fascinating insights in Catholic beliefs.”

Connecting With Carlos

Father Carlos has recently launched a financial campaign to install Wi-Fi and monitors in the church which will enable us to project the hymns and responses during Mass. The equipment will also be beneficial in the future as we continue to livestream our Mass as part of our effort to stay connected to those who are unable to physically join us in the church.

If you are able to help, please send your contribution to Father Carlos, St. Michael Parish, 1225 National Road, Wheeling. In the memo line please write “tech” so we will be sure to keep your tax-deductible donation restricted for this project.

Thank you to our friends who have generously helped with our campaign:

We are saddened by the outbreaks of violence in Minneapolis and in our country.

In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches us “Blessed are the peacemakers” and to “love your enemies.” All human beings are made in God’s image and likeness. We are one human family — brothers and sisters despite what divides us. Christians have the obligation to prioritize peaceful means to resolve conflicts. War wreaks a toll on a nation. Civilians bear a disproportionate burden of this cost during the war itself and as the nation rebuilds. However, those in authority have the obligation to protect the innocent. ©LPi

Immaculate Heart of Mary, help us to respect one another. Guide us to goodness and shield us from

evil. Help communities who have been besieged by hate and discontent. Let love, peace, charity and

goodwill fill the hearts of all.
