Many thanks to all those parents, staff and students who attended the Discussion Night last week. Special appreciation to those contributors who spoke and shared their ideas. It is truly inspiring to hear the individual visions, it is heartening to identify the common themes and it is exciting to think of the action to come. An environment rich in the principles of Waldorf Education, excellence in teaching, student-centred learning, community collaboration and a commitment to environmental sustainability - all key themes on the night. If you missed your copy of the submissions booklet (sent home with students) an online version is available at http://tinyurl.com/mbws-futures-booklet. The next event is the FUTURES UNCONFERENCE on September 8, 9am-4pm at the LAC. Come for a while, come for the whole day! Don’t miss the opportunity to contribute and participate in the final consultation phase of the Strategic Planning Process. For catering purposes, we would encourage you to register your interest at http://tinyurl.com/mows-futures-unconference.

SATURDAY 8/9Unconference 2 Strategic Plan

Dear High School Parents,As part of our commitment to providing an excellent and rigorous education the High School will be holding Parent Teacher interviews in Week 7 this term, Wednesday and Thursday 5th and 6th September. The aim of these meetings is to give you a snapshot of your child’s learning so far in Semester 2 and constructive feedback that you can use to help them in their development. These meetings are planned to be forward looking rather than retrospective and will focus on your child’s continuing progress and how you can be a part of this journey.Waldorf Education looks at each student as an individual and strives to meet their challenges and solve their riddles in a way that always allows them to be growing and

moving. To be an ‘A grade student’ is to be fixed and stable with little room for development or flexibility. We like to look at the next challenge that each student needs to meet, wherever they are on their life path; every student can reach their potential, and this potential is only limited by the imagination that we engender within them. Please use the Google doc link below to make a time to speak with your child’s teachers. Some teachers may also request an interview. If you are unable to find a time that is suitable to your commitments, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we can make alternative arrangements.h t t p : / / t i n y u r l . c o m /MtBarkerParentTeacherNight

Kindergarten

At Banksia Rose this term we have started using a Bokashi Bin, each day the children empty their food scraps into the Bokashi, they add the activator and we leave it to ferment. When Bokashi is full we drain the liquid from the tap at the base and this concentrated liquid plant food is mixed with water in a watering can and the children water our vegetable garden and plants - by reusing our food scraps we make free liquid fertiliser! We then dig a deep hole with the solid waste from the Bokashi bin going back into the earth from which it originally came to enrich our soil.Great work Banksia Rose Children!

Dear Nightingale Parents

Many thanks to those that were able to come to our gardening morning. We were very productive in making a new vegie bed, pruning and a general tidy up of our garden in preparation for Spring.I would also like to thank you for your support in the mornings as you say your goodbyes to your children and then continue on with your day. Our morning gather before we head off for our walk is calm and settled and the children are ready to begin their kindergarten day.The children have begun their work of sanding and polishing to create a small gift for their fathers (grandfather or special friend) and these gifts will make their way home soon. During our walk we made some visits to Jocelyn in her woodwork room and asked her kindly if she could help us to prepare our gifts. Thank you Jocelyn for welcoming us to your classroom and for your help.

Play

They’re off ! Class 7 successfully departed school at 6am for their 10 day journey to the Flinders Ranges for the Camel Trek.

Class 7 performed a play this term which was about the Renaissance. They did very well and remembered the bulk of their lines and cues. It was great to witness the cooperation and timing, particularly with set changes and lighting and also that the students began to take on their characters.Well done Class 7!

On Monday afternoon we had the pleasure of presenting a brief overview of the Visual Art Curriculum in the High School and a colour activity based on experience from the National Arts Conference this year. This concluded a whole school picture of the Art Curriculum that began some time ago with a presentation from Early Years and Primary School Teachers. The class 8 students participate in a range of exercises including drawing the moods of nature, which takes students out of their changing moods into the moods of nature. They also explore convex and concave (active and receptive) gestures in clay modelling, manifested through an exercise exploring the metamorphosis of a frog’s life cycle and through the creation of pinch pots and coil pots.

Class 9 experiences a full year of Visual Art, where black and white is heavily explored in drawing. They focus on tonal drawing; working to bring the light and dark elements together to find the subtleties between the two extremes. The students also explore light from different angles upon objects. This includes drawing images with light in front of an object and light behind an object. They participate in two Art History Main Lessons to hopefully develop an appreciation of art and find inspiration from the masters of the past as they strove for beauty and the ideal. In Clay Modeling the students explore the human form, creating torsos. This exercise links with the Ancient Greek period and the Anatomy Main Lesson.

Initially in Class 10 the students continue with black and white drawing through the medium of pen and ink. They create images where correct shading techniques are necessary when using the strong black ink. Following this colour is re-introduced through coloured ink, pastel drawing and colour painting where the students can experience colour freedom. In clay modelling the students learn practical clay building techniques while forming a life-sized human bust.

Class 11 students work largely in watercolour where they re-engage in nature through botanical painting. This correlates with the Botany Main Lesson and the exploration of ecosystems. Through this they explore ideas and their connection to artwork while using creative language in preparation for Class 12.The Combined Class 11 and Class 12 Fine Art Elective provide students the opportunity to further immerse themselves in their passion for art. We cover a range of mediums and delve into the theory behind artwork and our personal reaction to it. In Class 12 the students consolidate their artistic experiences here at the Mt Barker Waldorf School by studying their own and other people’s portraits, initially in black and white and then later in a medium of their choosing. They also complete the last of the Art History Main Lessons (Modern Art) and the Architecture Main Lesson.

The Class 10 colour wheel exercise (see Kiki’s drawing above) was then provided to the staff, who experienced the colour wheel in chalk on white paper. They worked at initially creating the colours in blocks around the page and then slowly merging them to explore how the colours interact and change as they meet one another.

Student UnconferenceCan you help?

On Friday of week 7 (7 September), our High School students are being given the opportunity to have their own ‘unconference’. Mirroring the unconference that is open to all of our community on the following day, this unconference will give our students a chance to have a voice regarding the future of our school. We are encouraging students to think about their visions and aspirations for this place, and to take up the challenge of proposing session topics and discussing with each other their hopes and passions for future changes and innovations. The unconference will begin after recess and run for the rest of the school day. All students in classes 10, 11 and 12 and their teachers will be attending. Students in classes 7, 8 and 9 will have normal lessons offered that day but have the opportunity to opt in to the unconference. Consent forms will be sent home with those students in 7-9 who are interested in attending. We are excited to be provided with the forum to listen to students about their future visions of our school, and thank Richie Khoo for donating his time to help us run the day.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone in our community would have some old golf clubs that they will be willing to donate to our school for our High School Physical Education programme.Any donations (of any kind and condition) would be accepted at the High School Hub (Library).

On Friday 24th of August our Class 8/9 students participated in the Indoor Soccer competition at Morphett Vale Stadium. Both boys and girls were up against stiff competition but played to the best of their ability in good spirt and fair play. The 9 minute halves were fast and furious as the ball went back and forth from end to

end. It’s was noticeable as the day went by that players improved in individual and team skills. Well done to all who participated and did an excellent job in representing the school.

On Saturday 18 August 2018 we held our Community Singing event in the Living Arts Centre.Over the afternoon around 40 adults and children gathered to sing, dance and share a meal. Very quickly the sounds of harmonious singing were winging their way to all corners of the auditorium, as we learned songs from the USA, Canada, Nambia and Europe. When it grew chilly in the late afternoon, Pam had a simple folk dance to warm us all up. The evening ended with a delicious meal, complete with lively conversation. We all went home warmed in body and spirit. My sincere thanks to Pam and her accompanist, Alex, for the sublime music making. Please look out for further events later in the year!

Dare to DreamEmmison Vernon-Skewes

Llewelyn Clothing

Emmison and Llewelyn Vernon-Skewes have created a fashion label ‘Llewelyn’ which provides employment to African artisans through a partnership with anti-slavery organisation Challenging Heights which is working towards ending child trafficking in Ghana.Emmison recently visited our school to talk to High School students during assembly. We heard the story of ‘Abraham’ a 14 year old village boy sold to his uncle and who then spent the following four years fishing as a slave 7 days a week, 16 hours per day. His dream was to become a tailor was finally realised when he joined Challenging Heights and is now part of the team producing Llewelyn Clothing. We’d love to support the enterprise – please visit the website for more information: https://llewelynclothing.com/ Instagram:@llewelynclothing

Dare to dream. This is an underlying message of our work as Waldorf teachers and it was such a pleasure to see this embodied by one of our graduates, Emmison Vernon-Skewes. Emmison spoke to the students this week at assembly of how he dared to make a difference to help address child slavery in Ghana. Many people he shared his idea with said it wouldn’t be possible and wouldn’t work so it was heartening to hear that he found the courage regardless and has now set up a business which employs people who were vulnerable to slavery. As the Class 12s are nearing the end of their Class 12 Project process and the 11s are just forming their Class 12 Project focus for next year, it was particularly inspiring to hear of Emmison’s current project out in the world. It offered us all the picture that one day we can take our dreams into the world and have the courage to enact them.

Dear Waldorf Community,

In celebration of the upcoming 100th year anniversary of Waldorf education, I am pleased to introduce an exciting new website, steinerbnb.com!

This site is for anyone who shares in the values of the far reaching Anthroposophic movement.

Whether you are traveling to attend an extended training, a weekend conference, to visit a school, work on a farm, or simply for vacation, this site is for you.

As a Waldorf class teacher, I found that traveling to trainings or conferences often became cost prohibitive with the price of accommodation of Airbnb or hotels. I also found that while traveling to new places for vacation, I wanted to visit the local Waldorf school and meet like-minded people from the area within which I was traveling.

My take away from these experiences was that there must be a way we can support one another within our larger community, furthering the connection of our worldwide movement. What better way to do this than by opening our homes to one another at an affordable rate? With our growing community now stretching across sixty countries, we have a tremendous opportunity for exploration and connectivity through our shared values.

As a new site, we are busy gathering available properties from all over the world at lower costs than what you would find elsewhere. Please consider listing your home, an extra room, or even a sleeping space.

Don’t forget to add your name to our newsletter mailing list and to check back from time to time. As our listings grow, so will our site!

Warm Regards,

Heather Fields & Dan Bramall

A workshop for professionals working with children, including School

Counsellors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Teachers, Principals,

Kindergarten Directors and Child Therapists. Estimates show that 1 in 3 people have a form of insecure attachment with their caregiver (Bruce Perry, 2013).

Poor early attachment impacts the capacity for children to develop healthy social relationships. Children might struggle to make or keep friends, lack empathy or remorse, be aggressive or controlling or passive and withdrawn. Play offers more than an opportunity to learn, it is also a place for emotional growth.

In this Workshop Sally will introduce the therapeutic power of play from a Child-Centered Play Therapy perspective.

Come and explore how we can enhance children’s attachment experiences and capabilities and support the young people we work towards healthy social and emotional growth. Presented by Sally Baron, Psychologist and Play Therapist
