It was great to hear of all the different adventures the children had over the Easter break. It sounded like most of the school went to Totaranui to enjoy the last of the summer weather. It has been an exciting couple of days with the GODZone adventure racers flying past school. It sounds like they have appreciated the support they got from the kids. It was an early start this morning (3.30am) to watch Ritchie McCaw and the Cure Kids team shoot past the school. Our thoughts are with Tiffany Solly, who is in CHCH with her eldest daughter Brooke, who is in CHCH hospital with a serous back injury. We wish the family all the best for a successful recovery. THANK YOU FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE At their meeting yesterday the Fundraising Committee gave us $13,483 to purchase the following technology for our classes 5 x 50"Viera LED TVs & Wall mount brackets (1 for each class) 12 x iPad Air (4 each for Rm 1,4,5) 8 x iPad Mini (4 each for Rm 2,3) We hope to have these all in action for the start of term 2. This parental support by a school fundraising group is unusual as generally their money goes towards school resources. Thanks firstly to the Fundraising team for all their organization of various fundraising activities, which has helped raise all this money. Secondly to all who have supported the Fundraising team by helping out with Friday lunches, supplying ingredients for food preparation, helping out at functions, supervising and serving at discos and manning stalls. Every little bit helps. GODZone Adventure—the kids have had a great two days cheering for all the teams that cycled past Motupipi. Cure Kids and Ritchie McCaw went through during the night, but a few still got up and supporting his team. Luckily Bruce our local policeman stood in as a „look a like‟, so the kids got to cheer for „Ritchie‟ as Bruce cycled past.

KAKA RELEASE On Tuesday, seven lucky children had the opportunity to walk into the aviary at Wainui Hut to be part of the

second Kaka transfer for Project Janszoon.

We helped carry the four Kaka in their special boxes from the helicopter into the aviary, then get the food ready

for them. They had yummy salad and some sweet juice ready.

It was amazing listening to all their noises, cooing softly, squawking and calling like a Tui.

They will be in the aviary for three weeks then released out into the bush in the school holidays.

Anyone can walk in to Wainui Hut from the car park at Harwoods Hole up the Canaan. It takes about an hour and

a half. Take the opportunity to see these wonderful birds.

“On the walk there were lots of mushrooms and toadstools in all sorts of colours such as purple, red, white and yellow.” Zoe R “I like setting up all the Kaka food in the aviary.” Emma S

“I really liked seeing the little Robin on the path on our way back. It was like it was showing us the way.” Amalie “I liked playing tag and bunny poo fights.” Lily W “The Kakas’, Cages and the aviary were smaller than I thought they would be..” Arjuna G “It was cool when the helicopter landed. There was lots of wind.” Lief O

The Big Cave—by Rosie

I puffed up the hill. Under and over branches. It was a steep climb, as

steep as a sand dune that towered up and up towards the sky. There were lots of sticky plants and prickles, but I did not care, I just kept on puffing up

the hill. Finally after what seemed like hours we were there, hurray!! There was a

breeze coming from the cave entrance…”Brrrr it‟s cold!” I said.

ROOM ONE WRITING

The Fantastic Big Cave—by Anna C

I climbed down the rocky path holding on to the stiff rope. It was a dark,

long cave, stalagmite's and stalactite's everywhere. I felt excitedly happy! There were even stalagmite's that were also

stalactite's! As we walked futher the smaller they got, some were still just starting. I

went to a place that I could touch the stalactites, they felt rough.

Then more light came as we arrived at a clearing. A bit of grass grew and you could feel the lovely breeze flying past it was amazing!

Freezing Cold River!—by Daisy The biking was so much fun, I could just smell that farm smell. I felt so

good. I felt like I was going 100km per hour. It got harder and I stealthily crept up to the fast group. “Wippie”, I yelled as

I swerved into a ditch. Rosie yelled, “Are you ok Dai Bra?” I was okay, I

just landed in some grass and water. When we got to the river I felt the water. Whoa! Too cold to go swimming….But I did. When I got out I was

shivering so much but it was worth it!

Slimy, Smelly River—by Caitlin

“Very bumpy and windy”, I said to Rosie as we pushed through the wind. “It‟s ex-

hausting”, I‟m saying to myself because I can‟t talk out loud. I hate the smell of petrol as a big stinky campervan went past us. As we got through that enormous slippy, smelly ride, the three of us dropped our bikes and ran to the others that were at the bank. I immediately sat down exhausted! When everyone else got to where we were based, we had some yummy home made food. After the morning we were allowed to go for a swim in the river. Yah! A nice refresh. Ye, ye, yuk, yuk, yuk, slimy, smelly, muddy seaweed...as my feet went squelch!

The Element Game—by Iris We are at school camp. Incorrect we are at Air Element Camp. “Whee!” I shouted. “whizzing on a cloud is so much fun!” SNAP! Mrs Fluffy said, “You are disrupting my class for the third time. Ala malala detention for you!” “Noooooooooooooooooooooo!” “What is three thousand, three hundred and nine thousand, nine hundred?” said the magic maths board. “I‟m not answering”, I said haughtily.

Amazing Battleships—by Trey R

I put my hand in the box. I picked out a seven. The best number in the

box! Apart from it‟s arch nemesis, Number 1! I was running, “Taking people‟s lives!!...”

Then kept on running, another and another… Then Gypsy got me with a One 1….

There was lots of yelling and screaming. Jodie whistled, the game was over.

Then we went inside and had pudding...yum!

Salty, Sandy, Sand Dunes—by Phoebe

Wheeee! I ran down the sand dune. Unfortunately I got a mouthful of sand

and landed face down in the sand! I spat out sand, yuck!!!

I climbed up the long climb to the top of the sand dune. I was puffing by the time I reached the top.

I sniffed, I could smell a salty, sandy smell. I ran down again and my eyes got full of sand! It felt like I was flying. This

time I managed to not fall over!!

My long, long bike ride! - by Lily H

I cycled on a long, long bike ride. It was so tough! I am not very good at riding, so for me it was extremely hard! I could hear the sound of the other children huffing and puffing.

When we finally arrived, I slid off my bike and took my helmet off. My legs felt like jelly. I stumbled to the ground and spotted a little rock. I‟ll sit there, I thought so I did. Afterwards we did sketching. I sketched the mountain. After we finished our sketching we had morning tea. Suddenly I decided to go for a swim in the river even though it was freezing.!

Amazing Sand Dunes—by Riley O

We shot out of the car and I ran up the hill. Yoshi said, “Front flip off the hill!”

“Okay.” I said. “Here I go…..”

I jump….I flip….I land….I roll. Yoshi was gobsmacked! He didn‟t think I would do it.

We started walking the track. At the top was a cool view. We kept walking up the hill. We made it to Wharariki Beach! I ran up the sand dunes and front

flipped off the grass bank. There I go…. Running down the sand dunes is

exhilarating!
