WELCOME INVITATION 7th. INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MARITIME HEALTH
Tarragona (Spain) 22-26 April 2003 Welcome / Bienvenidos / Benvinguts !!!
We are delighted to announce the Seventh International Symposium on Maritime
Health and we invite you to attend. It will be held in Tarragona (former capital in
Roman times, declared World Heritage by UNESCO) 22, 23, 25, 26 April 2003, with
one day, 24, in Barcelona (present capital of Catalonia).Tarragona and Barcelona are the main harbours of this outstanding and cosmopolitan area within the
Autonomous Region of North-East of Spain. We will gather maritime health and
related specialists from several countries of the world. The conference will feature
symposia with a large variety of maritime health topics, workshops, poster sessions,
updates and satellite meetings, such as Spanish Conferences and IMHA Seminars.
Some of the topics to be featured include: medical attendance and prevention,
fitness examinations standards, emergencies on board, telemedicine, maritime
history, occupational risk prevention, safety and hygiene, marine animals pathology,
infectious, cardiovascular diseases, vaccinations, workshops of spirometry,
echography, harbours, fishing industry, maritime medicine evidence base etc.
The main official language will be English. The 14th annual scientific meeting organised by the Spanish Society of Maritime Medicine, Sociedad Española de
Medicina Marítima (SEMM), a parallel national Conference, will be included as a
satellite meeting, Spanish language will be possible on 25th-26th April, 2003.
We have the pleasure of sharing an important innovation in the organisation of these
international meetings – this is the first time that the International Maritime Health
Association (IMHA) has been involved so directly in the planning of the event. We
have kept the international support in the organisation of WHO, ILO, IMO & ITF and
we have increased it with national institutions like the Port Authorities of Tarragona
and Barcelona, the Instituto Social de la Marina (Labour Ministry), Tarragona Town
hall and County council, some Departments of the Autonomous Government –
Generalitat of Catalonia (Welfare, Labour…), UGT-Mar; academic and scientific institutions like the University Rovira & Virgili of Tarragona, our Tarragona Medical
3
College, ACMCB, SESMT, SCMG, SEMSUBHIP, Comissió Pere Virgili; sponsors
like Cyclops, MATT, Sibel SA, Asmedic Sl, Ibercaja, Botiquines Sans, Almirall
Prodesfarma, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, MDS and also the staff of Bettatur and
our travel agency Viajes Iberia; that will make the list too large to be mentioned. Thanks to all of them.
This step, gives us a new opportunity to communicate experiences in maritime
medicine. This is why we have titled the symposium “A Meeting Point for New
Challenges to Improve Maritime Health”. We hope that the shared goal of all
participants will be acquiring new tools to improve the health of all the persons
involved in maritime activities, bearing in mind medical care as well as occupational,
preventive and psycho-social aspects. We thank all the persons and institutions that
are supporting this Symposium.
Ours is a truly warm invitation to new friends and old. We are saying WELCOME
from the depths of our hearts; we have a lot of both hard work and enjoyment to share together.
We look forward to seeing you in April for what will be a memorable symposium.

About the meeting places
At a latitude of 41º5’ North and a longitude of 1º14’ East, on the Mediterranean Sea and in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, we find Tarragona and 100 km. North Barcelona. Both are Spanish cities which are part of the autonomous community of Catalonia, which present capital is Barcelona. Tarragona is a town with 2000 years of history; its origins have been fixed in the era of the arrival of the Romans to the peninsula in the year 218 BC. The necessity of an easily protected harbour was the motive for the Romans establishing themselves there. They constructed a walled city which would come to be the capital of “Hispania Citerior,” a Roman province which covered more than half of the Iberian Peninsula. Today, the city has a surface area of 63,000 square kilometres, which include the principal parts of the city and almost the totality of the Port installations of Tarragona. The mean altitude is some 70 meters above sea level and the population is approximately 120,000. As far as climate conditions, it is pleasant, with an average temperature in spring of 16º, in summer 25º. Nearest Airports: Reus (charters from Europe and one fight from and to Madrid) & El Prat of Barcelona (a shuttle train every 30 min goes to Barcelona Sants train station and from there every some minutes there is a train to Tarragona).
Situation: (1) Autoritat Portuaria Building & Tinglado n. 1 (Symposium Venue)

sesiones, ponencia y ponentes, resumen, reuniones satélites etc.
menos media hora antes (diapositivas, CD etc).
