The Rainforest ‘Rich Topic’ continues to be a highly engaging focus for the term. In the Year 1/2 syndicate there has been so much fantastic writing, artwork and research happening about the different aspects of the rainforest, particularly the creatures that live there. Last week the Year 1/2 syndicate organised a trip to the temperate rainforest at Lake Rotoiti. There they had a talk from the staff at the Department of Conservation centre about native birds, pests and what they are doing to help. Then they went down to the lake and spent time feeding eels. The short Bellbird walk through the forest was another highlight and the very enthusiastic parents were able to stop and talk to their group of children about many of the forest’s features. Lunch happened at Lake Rotoiti School. The playtime there was heaps of fun with the children who attend the Lake Rotoiti School. Such a wonderful trip and lots of learning. Huge thanks to all the parents who helped out. Special thanks to Steve Thomas (parent). Steve is a local real estate agent (First National) who not only drove one bus (he has a bus licence) but he also donated $100 towards transport costs.
The new ‘start-up’ New Entrants classroom will begin at the beginning of Week 6, Term 3.
We have appointed Jo Canning to be the teacher. Jo is a very experienced New Entrants
teacher who will be a fine addition to our Year 0/1 syndicate team. Presently Jo is a reliever
at Richmond School and she works one day a week at Mahana School in the New Entrants
class. Prior to this she taught in Wellington (2005 – 2010), at Motueka South School (2011)
and Upper Moutere 2012-2013 (including being the Acting Junior syndicate leader). Then
she has been on maternity leave (two children), working part-time and working as a day
reliever at a number of schools. Jo’s husband (Ryan) is the Deputy Primary at Nayland
Primary. Their little boy starts soon as a New Entrant in Room 20.

LAKE ROTOITI FUN
Yesterday dad, my class and I went to Lake Rotoiti. It was so
humongously far away that we had to take a bus. We went there
because we are learning about rainforests. I was hungry on the bus. I
went to the visitors centre and I learned about lots of types of birds. On
the forest walk I saw amazing tuis and stupendous ferns. I loved the
slippery and slimy eels because they look like black slimy worms. I was
shattered when I got home.
Liam, aged 6 (Room 13)
Yesterday room 16 and room 12 went
to visit the rainforest. It was so amazing!
First we took a bus to a different school.
We had morning tea and played on their
playground. We walked in the rainforest
and saw lots of traps. They catch
predators so they don’t eat trees and
baby birds. We all saw big eels. They
were scary. I was holding Hairy
Maclairy in my hand and Rachel took a
picture.
Manaia, aged 6 (Room 13)
On Monday Room 16 and Room 12 went to
Lake Rotoiti to visit the rainforest. We hopped off
the bus and put our warm clothes on. After we
had morning tea, we went in the DOC Centre.
Then we went out to see the forest. We saw all
of the traps. We took Hairy Maclairy too. My
favourite part was feeding the eels. They were
ginormous! I had a great day at Lake Rotoiti with
my mum.

MAKE A WORD WALL ON A LARGE PIECE OF
PAPER ON THE FRIDGE
Add any words that your child gets stuck on in
their reading book or spelling words.
First… write the word on the top of a narrow
strip of paper and ask them to copy it
underneath then check they got it right. Then
fold the first word over on top of their word so
they can’t see it and ask them to write it again
without looking this time. When they’ve done
that, they can open the fold and check it is
correct. If it is correct, fold it over again and
repeat this down to the bottom of the strip.
Next… write the word on a brick on your word
wall on the fridge.
Then… remind them to read the word wall each
day (when they get a drink from the fridge, each
time the walk past the fridge, while they are
waiting for their breakfast etc.)
