Time certainly continues to fly by as we are now over the midway point of Term 4. Regular attendance to school has been a focus for all our children this year. Regular attendance to school supports children in achieving their learning potential and maintain strong friendships. Parents are reminded if children are away from school on a particular day they can email or phone the school to report the explained absence. One of the biggest challenges all schools face at this time of year is the planning and organisation of classes for the following year. To help us be as accurate as possible and minimise any changes at the start of next year, please let the office know if you are moving and anticipating not returning to Hambledon in 2017. The staffing and class formation process continues right through until the first weeks of the following year. Preparation and planning is designed to limit any changes and adjustments to classes. END OF YEAR SCHOOL AWARDS I would like to remind parents and community members that we will be holding the end of year awards ceremonies in the last week of school for all year levels. The format for this year is that each class from Prep – Year 6 will issue class awards for academic achievement, academic effort and attendance. In order to facilitate the handing out of the awards we are holding the ceremonies on the following dates: Prep Parade Ceremony – Tuesday 6th December 2016 Year 1 and 2 Ceremony - Wednesday 7th December 2016 Year 3, 4 and 5 Ceremony - Wednesday 7th December 2016 Year 6 Farewell – Thursday 8th December 2016 CONGRATULATIONS MRS LONERAGAN Last week our Head of Special Education Services, Tania Loneragan was informed that she was successful in being appointed as the inaugural Deputy Principal of the Cairns Special School. Over the years Tania has made a valuable contribution to our school community with her passion for differentiation and inclusion. On behalf of our school community, I would like to congratulate Tania on her success and thank her for her significant contribution to our school community. CHILDREN WHO ARE SICK Sometimes children are attending school and appear to be displaying some symptoms of illness. Although we continually encourage parents and carers to ensure children are at school every day, when they are ill it is best they stay at home to recuperate. When children attend school ill, they usually spread their symptoms to other children and staff. SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS OF BEING RESPECTFUL Staff, Parents and Carers are expected to model to our children at school respectful and polite ways of working together. Our children look to adults to model to them the ways respectful and responsible people work and communicate e.g. by giving happy greetings and by asking how other people’s days are going. There are times when issues can arise and adults need to model the appropriate behaviours by talking calmly and respectfully towards each other in order to share different points of view so that a meaningful way forward can be agreed. Our children look up to each one of us to guide the way. Please consider how you show them how you respectfully get-along with others. If children from our school are experiencing behavioural concerns, school staff will talk to students about those issues if the children’s parents or carers are not there. Some children get very upset and concerned when other adults approach them. If you have any concerns about our children’s behaviour, please notify the office or speak to a staff member near-by. EARLY ARRIVALS It seems that we are still seeing an increasing number of children getting to school quite early lately (sometimes before 7:45am). Limited supervision is provided at school by teacher aides and admin staff from 8.00 am. Please try and arrange for your children to arrive after this time to ensure their safety. Our Outside School Hours Care provider is available for any families that may require before or after school care. Any children who arrive before 8.30 am are asked to sit in the designated undercover areas until the 8.30am bell rings. USING VISUALS (continued)

In last week’s newsletter I looked at why we use visuals. This week is about how we use visuals. It is important that when we use visuals we use them consistently. How: ♦ Visuals include: real objects, parts of objects or remnants (e.g.

empty packet of sultanas); photographs of the actual object, photo-graphs of similar objects, drawings, computer generated symbols, (e.g. Boardmaker, Pics for PECS symbols) and words. Even the McDon-alds’ golden arches are a visual, and one that every child seems to know!

♦ Your child’s age and ability will be the determining factor when deciding what type of visual support to use. Generally very young children and those who have additional difficulties need visuals that most closely resemble the actual object. These children may respond best when you show them the car keys rather than a Boardmaker symbol of a car. It is easier to use photos or symbols than carry round bags of objects however, if they don’t have meaning for your child at this point remnants or objects are fine.

♦ Always couple visuals with speech. They are an aid to help you understand spoken language, not a substitute.

♦ Be eclectic. You do not need to only use one type of visual. You can still use objects even if your child recognises symbols.

♦ Always print the name of the visual in lower case letters. This will ensure that everyone calls the object the same thing (is it a mug or a cup?) and as words are only another visual code your child might crack this code as well!

♦ To be valuable, visuals must be accessible. Keep them near where you are likely to use them – on the fridge or somewhere else handy in the kitchen; in the toilet; near the front door etc.

♦ Wait! Like all communication you need to allow your child time to process and point.

♦ Persevere. Your child may need many trials before he makes the connection between the visual and the real object.

STUDENT LEADERS 2017

At the end of last term, we invited our current Year 5 students to apply for Hambledon State School 2017 Student Leadership positions. We received a large number of quality applications this year and have been working hard on the difficult task of selecting our final 8 candidates who will now be campaigning for student votes.

Applications this year were of a very high standard and the students interviewed were full of great ideas around what that could offer and how they would try to make our school an even better place next year.

We have now selected our final 8 students and they are already ready hard at work on their campaigns writing speeches, designing posters, making classroom visits and talking to other students about their plans.

This is a very exciting time for our potential leaders and we wish them all the very best of luck for the elections. The voting will take place at school on Thursday of next week. For a more detailed timeline, see the separate article.

PB4L

This week’s topic continues to be about encouraging expected behaviours around our school. Our students have been discussing the expectations around their own and others’ conduct alongside how they will know when they are doing the right thing.

Students have been looking at how their teachers and other adults who work with them, may acknowledge them as they do the right thing, work hard or help others. This may range from a simple verbal acknowledgment to a Student of the Week award on parade.

Finally, this is Week 6 and our next round for the Positive Recognition Program is currently being organised. Details for this to come in next week’s newsletter.

Just a reminder that this Friday and Saturday 11th and 12th November is the Southern Cluster Instrumental Music Camp at Bentley Park College. The camp will begin at 8:15am on Friday and conclude 3:00pm Saturday. Students attending the camp will need to be dressed in full school uniform and be prepared with their instrument, music, morning tea, lunch (for Friday only), clothing and sleeping gear on Friday morning. Donations of home baked goods are still welcome. Students attending the camp will showcase their learning at an end of year concert on Thursday 17th November. Thank you to Ms Pols-Molford for organising this event for our instrumental music students. Last week all music aptitude tests were conducted with Year 3 students as part of the instrumental recruitment process. If your child is keen to learn a brass or woodwind instrument in 2017, please return the expression of interest forms to the school office as soon as possible. Interviews will be conducted with Ms Pols-Molford in Week 8. Sheree Howell, Music Teacher

SCHOOL NEWS

NEWS FROM 3E

This Term, 3E has been busy learning about alliteration, onomatopoeia and adjectives. We learnt that although many poems have a rhyme scheme, that it is not always necessary to write a good poem. We looked at a few different forms of poetry and then had a go at writing one of our own. Our poems were written using the senses of seeing, feeling and hearing. We had to think about what we could see, feel and hear when we visited the beach. Our poems had to include alliteration, onomatopoeia and adjectives. We then had to perform our poem in front of the class. It was great fun writing our own poems. The whole class did a really awesome job.

BENTLEY PARK COLLEGE - JUNIOR SECONDARY TRANSITION Transition day for current Year 6 students is drawing close! Have you enrolled your child for 2017? If you are intending to send your child to Bentley Park College for Year 7 in 2017, please ring Miss Maha on 40408130 to make an appointment for an enrolment interview as soon as possible.

Did you know that Bentley Park College has an Enrolment Management Plan (EMP)? Our catchment area can be found at http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/. Simply type in Bentley Park College or your address into the search box on the left side and the website will locate the area for you. Letters have been sent to those students who have completed their enrolment interviews confirming their attendance for Transition day on Wednesday 30 November 2016. It is recommended that students arrive at school by 8.45am and assemble at the Stadium where the day’s activities will be intro-duced. Parents are welcome to stay for this assembly. Students will be dismissed at 3.00pm. The P&C will have uniforms on display in the stadium from 8.30am – 9.30am and will have the Uniform Shop open from 8.30am-3.30pm. The Uniform Shop will also be open the week prior to school from Monday 16 to Friday 20 January 2017, from 8.30am – 3.30pm and Saturday 21 January from 10am-2pm. In 2017 Bentley Park College will continue to phase in our new uniform. Whilst the original uniform is still acceptable to wear in 2017, Year 7 students are encouraged to purchase the new 7-9 Junior Secondary “maroon” shirt. We look forward to welcoming twelve Year 5 students from Hambledon SS, Isabella SS, Whiterock SS and Bentley Park College who will be going ‘head-to-head’ in the “Bentley’s Best” Challenge on Thursday 1 December 2016. Last year’s inaugural winners Hambledon SS are keen to take out the title again – but will they rise to the challenges put to them in Robotics, Mathematics, Spelling and Science? Stay tuned… All year levels from P-12 will commence school on Monday 23 January 2017. Tanya Findlay, Deputy Principal Student Services 7-12
