Background: IDOT’s Division of Aeronautics purchased two Unmanned Aircraft Systems (or, drones) to test and eventually integrate into workflows to make agency operations more efficient, economical (drones can cut down on the on-site time needed for survey crews), safer for workers (less time in higher risk locations) and more convenient for the traveling public. Drones are especially helpful for infrastructure/bridge inspections and for surveying/mapping –especially in locations that may be difficult to reach on foot.

IDOT has an aspiration to be the most innovative DOT in the nation. Drones are one step toward fulfilling that vision.

In December 2016, to highlight how IDOT’s certified pilots planned to use drones for the agency, we hosted a demo at our Central Office and invited media to attend. We also invited a State of Illinois film crew, which provided an uplink to media outlets throughout the state.

Timing & execution:IDOT’s Office of Communication selected mid-December for the demo and news release. This is typically a slow news time for our state, and media is looking for non-holiday features to fill its news cycle. Additionally, drones were a popular gift item this past holiday season, making the topic relevant and giving IDOT the opportunity to distinguish “toys” versus the sophisticated flight software IDOT was using.

The press release included a link to a YouTube video, which aided in the number of (and quality of) media hits we received.

Available for interviews at the demo were the Illinois

Transportation Secretary and a certified drone

pilot/content expert from Aeronautics.

Results/Media Hits: Once media received our press release and saw initial reports from those who attended the demo, interest immediately took flight throughout the state.

Related Results: Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office also latched onto the coverage. His communication team shared our coverage and created a video of their own to share on social media.
