Essential #11 - Our Trail Map: The Bible2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 3:16-17
What are the most valuable sources of guidance for people on the journey of life?
“Whatever experiences and feelings a Christian may have, and whatever may be learned from all other fields of knowledge, the ______________ ____________________ provides the primary source of reliable information for guidance in life.” (Lewis, Demarest, Integrative Theology Vol. 1, p. 165)
God ________________ our trail map (the Bible). - 2 Peter 1:20-21;2 Timothy 3:16a
Inspiration took different forms: 1. ____________ communication from the Lord. (Paul said, “I have
received from the Lord what I passed onto you…” (1 Cor. 11:23)).2. __________________ (John selected materials out of the Lord’s life
to form his Gospel (John 20:30-31)).3. Most of the time, it took the form of God’s Spirit ______________
_____________________ the heart, mind, emotions and personality of the writer inspired them so that they willingly and naturally carried out God’s Revelation, as he required.
Our trail map (Bible) is completely ________________ for your life journey.
The Bible is reliable and useful for: • Teaching = Learning how God works and how the world works.• Rebuking = _______________ pointing out sin in hopes of stirring
conviction, motivating confession and a change in behavior.• Correcting and training in righteousness = ______________ toward
restoration and improvement of virtues and character in your life.
Can our trail map (Bible) still be _______________?“There is ____________________________________ that we possess today what has always been regarded as the Scriptures of the Christian Church.” (Thomas, W.H. Griffith, How we got our Bible?)
Didn’t errors occur in all the copying of Scriptures over time? Yes, but ________________. Together they amount to about one page of the entire Testament and no core doctrine of Scripture is affected.
How the Bible crystalized into the form we have it today. The Old Testament is identical to the traditional Hebrew Bible.
The early church had three criteria for determining what books were to be included or excluded from the Canon of the New Testament.1. The book must have ____________________________________. 2. The book must have _____________________ to what was called
the "rule of faith." 3. The book had to have enjoyed continuous ____________________
and usage by the church at large.
The Bible is your trail map, inspired by God and completely reliable for your journey.
A CD of today’s sermon is available at the sound booth following the service. You may also watch or listen to the message online at cotf.org.
