Unplanned downtime in a Data Centre environment can prove extremely costly, and most organisations have a detailed and prescriptive preventative maintenance regime designed to mitigate the risk of such downtime. Typically, this regime would include monitoring and maintaining such factors as power, temperature and humidity, with particular focus on the management of the airflow to ensure optimum and requisite cooling. Contamination management is one area that is only included on the regimes of either the more enlightened Data Centre Managers or those that have experienced downtime. No matter what its source contamination can be extremely hazardous within a data centre: n Dust and other particles can clog air intake grills on cooling units and fans resulting in overheating, cooling equipment operating beyond capacity causing premature failure, power overloads and outages n Metal particulates such as zinc whiskers can cause electrical shorts in equipment n Dust and other contaminants can either block fire detection systems preventing effective use or can actually trigger false alarms or actual discharge. n Airflow and the resulting cooling can be seriously impacted by contaminants and debris within the subfloor and floor grills. The awareness of maintaining a ‘clean’ environment is growing amongst the standards and the OEM communities: n A number of hardware manufacturers are considering the cleanliness of the environment as a factor when assessing the validity of RMA and warranty claims n Several major manufacturers recommend in their hardware installation guidelines that “every effort should be made to ensure that the target environment is as dust and particulate free as possible”. n ISO 14644-1 Air Cleanliness guidelines are encouraging compliance as an inherent part of the Data Centre management process.

No matter what its source contamination can be extremely hazardous within a data centre:

n Dust and other particles can clog air intake grills on cooling units and fans resulting in overheating, cooling equipment operating beyond capacity causing premature failure, power overloads and outages

n Metal particulates such as zinc whiskers can cause electrical shorts in equipment

n Dust and other contaminants can either block fire detection systems preventing effective use or can actually trigger false alarms or actual discharge.

n Airflow and the resulting cooling can be seriously impacted by contaminants and debris within the subfloor and floor grills.

The awareness of maintaining a ‘clean’ environment is growing amongst the standards and the OEM communities:

n A number of hardware manufacturers are considering the cleanliness of the environment as a factor when assessing the validity of RMA and warranty claims

n Several major manufacturers recommend in their hardware installation guidelines that “every effort should be made to ensure that the target environment is as dust and particulate free as possible”.

n ISO 14644-1 Air Cleanliness guidelines are encouraging compliance as an inherent part of the Data Centre management process.

The benefits of professional Data Centre decontamination include:

n Improved efficacy of cooling systems

n Increased longevity and performance of hardware

n Improved power consumption

n Increased reliability of data centre uptime

n Compliance with contamination best practice guidelines

n Full preventative maintenance regime

n Peace of mind through risk mitigation

Contamination can take various forms, however over 80% of all contaminants within a Data Centre environment is caused by human traffic, whether this is dust, particulate from cardboard and packaging or contamination created from works within the Data Centre. Some contamination derives from the environment itself including concrete particles from an untreated sub floor, or fibres from air filters or zinc whiskers from oxidising metal.

Overview

An 8 Solutions Surface Clean is a basic level process designed to provide a relatively simple surface-only clean. This is typically used in Data Centres that have undergone some form of change that has impacted on the cleanliness of a facility, or for those that simply wish to more tightly maintain the cleanliness levels. This cleaning is either performed as an inherent part of the cleaning schedule or on an event driven basis.

An 8 Solutions Surface Clean targets all surfaces in the room including the floor and excludes floor and ceiling voids and high levels.

Service detailBefore beginning any work within the room/facility a thorough services and utilities check is performed to identify all utilities including emergency power off switches, all fire detection devices, including those located in the ceiling and floor voids and to ensure that the fire suppression is de-activated. If the fire system

cannot be deactivated then all fire detection units will be covered with a protective shield and located on a detailed plan prepared by the 8 Solutions team leader.

A daily health and safety and methodology briefing will then be given to the team by the team leader and a risk assessment will be performed as part of the clean.

Overview

8 Solutions provides two levels of Post Construction Clean: a Builders Clean and an Enhanced Builders Clean. Both are intended to be used after the completion of either the build of an entire new Data Centre or an extension or enhancement to an existing facility.

The Builders Clean is a basic level service that prepares the environment for the next stage of the fit out, it is not intended to be in any way an ISO level clean.

The Enhanced Builders Clean will prepare the room for the next stage of readiness in preparation for final stage deployment.

Builders Clean The Builders Clean regime will encompass the following:

n Focus on all areas from the subfloor to high levels

n Removal of all ‘non-heavy’ construction debris

n Dry clean to visual acceptability

Enhanced Builders Clean The Enhanced Builders Clean regime will encompass the following:

n Focus on all areas from the subfloor to high levels

n Removal of all ‘non-heavy’ construction debris

n Wipe down of all exposed surfaces

n Dry clean to visual acceptability

n Vacuum floor surface

Service detailBefore beginning any work within the room/facility a thorough check is performed to identify all utilities including emergency power off switches, all fire detection devices, including those located in the ceiling and floor voids and to ensure that the fire suppression is de-activated. Overview

All 8 Solutions technicians are fully trained in the equipment and infrastructure within a Data Centre and are qualified to decontaminate the externals of all types of racks and cabinets. We also have personnel trained in cleaning inside a rack or cabinet – including the front and rear of any server or communication equipment. This process is, in most cases, carried out on a live rack, with a data centre engineer in attendance or in some situations on an isolated rack where a much more intensive clean can be performed including equipment removal and cleaning. This type of clean is subject to stringent safety and procedural guidelines and methodologies. It should be noted that breakdown and re-assembly is not part of the 8 Solutions service and is the responsibility of the client.

External Rack CleaningThe External Rack Cleaning regime will encompass the following:

n Vacuuming all external surface areas including top and bottom of cabinets/racks

n Wipe down of all surface areas

n Final wipe down with cloth impregnated with specialist cleaning solution

Service detailBefore any work begins within the room or facility a thorough check is performed to identify all utilities including emergency power off switches, all fire detection devices, including those located in the ceiling and floor voids and to ensure that the fire suppression is deactivated. If the fire system cannot be deactivated

then all fire detection units will be covered with a protective shield and located on a detailed plan prepared by the 8 Solutions team leader.

A daily health and safety and methodology briefing will then be given to the team by the team leader and a risk assessment will be performed as part of the clean.
