102 December 2017 Rezoning Application | Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver + Louis Brier Home and Hospital Campus 8.0 LANDSCAPE JCC + LBH CAMPUS PLAZA The JCC + LBH Campus Open Space represents a unique opportunity to create a meaningful landscape expression that celebrates the community’s extensive programming and rich cultural significance. The design seeks to create a unique identity and civic role for the Campus while reinforcing the multigenerational community that will be using the space. A range of open space types support the diverse needs of the Campus community, offering both intimate courtyards for small gatherings and large plazas for community events. The site’s circulation emphasizes a meandering pedestrian experience and creates a distinct sense of arrival when entering from 41st street. The design strives to be experienced from both the ground and from the many levels that will view the space from above. It also seeks to create a seamless connection between the interior and exterior environments while establishing an ambitious and contemporary design approach that aims for excellence in sustainability innovation. Specific elements include a planting palette which contributes to the cultural and ecological value of the project. Planting will feature native, adaptive and resilient species when applicable, with an emphasis on plants that carry unique meaning with the Jewish community; open space that contributes to overall sustainability objectives of the Campus, including the potential to support sustainable food systems such as a community market; and a central water feature amenity that also functions as a stormwater management system.

LBH COMMONS

The LBH Open Space on the ground level will deliver critical outdoor amenities and access to nature while promoting activity, wellness and social activities for the residents and their visitors. The western side of the building will be accessible only from the building and provide a private patio for outdoor socializing, mild physical exercise and calming sensory opportunities. It will be fenced and provide ample security measures. The eastern side of the building will be visually integrated with the JCC + LBH Campus Plaza, encouraging multigenerational interaction between the community centre and hospital, while still providing outdoor space dedicated to the residents of LBH.

LBH Commons Elements include:

• A planting palette which contributes to the cultural and ecological value of the project. Planting will feature native, adaptive and resilient species when applicable, with an emphasis on plants that carry special meaning with the Jewish community.

• Memory care with access to outdoor spaces that reinforce physical exercise, and flexible spaces that accommodate changing needs and allow for activities that are familiar and encourage participation.

• Views and direct connection to the garden spaces, roof decks, and atrium.• Sense of security • A variety of gathering / sitting spaces that accommodate variety of group sizes.• Spaces that accommodate a range of mobility limitations. • All-season interest, and varying times of day and night, include shade structures and weather

protection.

LBH TOWER ROOF TERRACES (LEVEL 3, LEVEL 12, LEVEL 13)

The LBH Roof Terraces will provide shared, restorative outdoor spaces for the residents of LBH. Levels 3 and 12 will provide passive outdoor amenities, including social seating, outdoor dining and spaces for social gatherings. Level 13 will include two distinct areas, one in the north that is more active, and one area in the south that is more passive. The north area provides space for group classes and gatherings, gardening in raised planters and a layout that promotes social engagement and physical activity. The south area offers a more therapeutic character, including a water feature and significant green space. It will carefully consider the spatial requirements for residents with memory care needs and varying mobility limitations. Both spaces will consider the following:

• A planting palette which contributes to the ecological value of the project. Planting will feature native, adaptive and resilient species when applicable and prioritize plants with therapeutic qualities.

• A variety of sensory opportunities.• Ample shading form the sun and protection from the elements for year-round use. • Circulation routes that accommodate 2 persons walking side by side and wheelchairs. • Programming for sustainable food systems including edible landscaping and horticultural

programming. • RESIDENTIAL TOWER ROOF TERRACES (LEVEL 5 AND LEVEL 24)

The Residential Tower Roof Decks will provide a variety of outdoor spaces including opportunities for both socializing and quiet respite. The design establishes spaces which promote activity, wellness and social activities while reinforcing the importance of community. Level 5 will be focused on more active uses and will include a play area, BBQ and outdoor dining and community garden plots with composting facilities that support the project’s sustainable food systems objectives. Level 14 will provide more passive use and include seating, lounging and ambient fire pit. Both levels will also include: • A planting palette which contributes to the ecological value of the project. Planting will feature

native, adaptive and resilient species when applicable.• The incorporation of strong rainwater management practice, where applicable.

JCC ROOFTOP TERRACES (DAYCARE LEVELS 8 + 9 AND JCC+LBH BRIDGE TERRACE)

The JCC Rooftop Terrace represent exciting opportunities to extend the programming of the Community Centre and provide access to nature and the outdoors in an otherwise very urban setting.

The JCC Rooftop is concieved as a unique elevated playscape that connects Level 8 and 9 into an open space topography that serves the Childcare, Preschool and Afterschool Care Programs. Level 8 provides an extension of the indoor programming with significant covered space for year-round use. Level 9 includes flexible spaces which consider programming for a range of uses and ages for both established play and passive use. The design considers opportunities for interaction with natural elements, edible landscaping and interpretive and educational signage. Specific elements will include:

• Play elements such as fixed play elements, walking/play pathways, natural play, water and sand play, as well as passive open space.

• A shared indoor amenity space on Level 9 for all age group (Including washroom and muster area for coats and other short-term use items)

• Ample shading from the sun and protection from the elements for year-round use. • A robust plant palette with a strong ecological approach

The JCC + LBH Bridge Terrace will provide flexible open space to accommodate a range of programming and active uses to serve the needs of the entire Campus, including community centre, long term care and rental housing. Programming will consider arts, crafts, recreation, music, theatre and reading while also providing ample opportunities for passive use including social seating that will encourage interaction between kids, families and seniors. The central space can be used for yoga, workshops, theatre and informal play, while the surrounding spaces offer more intimate gathering opportunities.
