foreword
This program is published in memory of many outstanding golfing gentlemen, from the three Founders to present day invited contestants, who have participated in and contributed to Tri-State Golf Association Championships over the years.
Colonel Lee S. Read and Mr. Clifford E. Wagoner corresponded in 1938 and they met in 1939 at Anderson, Indiana, for their first meeting. Then it all came together on Monday, July 1, 1940, when the Tri-State Golf Association was “born” at a meeting held at the Cincinnati Country Club. The three persons responsible for organizing this group were Read (Louisville, Kentucky), Wagoner (Indianapolis, Indiana) and Mr. Roy G. Elliott (Cincinnati, Ohio).
There were others attending that first meeting who were equally interested in regional golf competition. This group included Professor G.A. Young (Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana), Mr. D.H. Kennedy (Martinsville, Indiana), and Mr. Earl Ruby (Courier-Journal & Times, Louisville, Kentucky), J.F. “Chief” Myers (Lexington, Kentucky), and Robert Bohne, Thomas W. Earls, Don Gill, Frank J. Loewe, Arthur Theler and Douglas A. Warner, all from Cincinnati, Ohio. Each of these men made many personal sacrifices in time, thought and money to assure the success of their idea … The Tri-State
Not only was the foresight of these ardent golfers responsible for the unique format of play which characterizes the Tri-State tournaments, but it brings us back each year with renewed interest and determination to win for ourselves, our part-ners, and our respective states.
It is interesting to note several items taken from the records that were passed upon at the first “official” meeting:
1– There were only three sets of prizes authorized during the early years pre-sented to (a) the Scotch Foursome winning team, (b) to the Four Ball Matches, Best Ball winning team, and (c) to the Combined Events winning team.
2– The entry fee was $5 per man, which included dinner on Saturday night and luncheon on Sunday after play. And … NO CARTS … everybody walked!
3– The President appointed a “secret Committee” who extended the invitation to participants in the tournament.
4– It was agreed that “all contestants register from their own clubs, but if affili-ated with two clubs in different States he should be privileged to enter from the club of his preference.”
Everything seemed to be much more simple in those days gone by!
There is so much history and so many fond memories for all who have played in the Tri-State Championships over the years. This pleasant way of making new golfing friends is unique in the Mid-West … and golf anywhere, for that matter. So, it is with deep respect for the Founders, Directors and all Contestants that we refer you to the following pages of records for the past tournaments. We hope you will enjoy these past reflections, and that your name can be added to this stellar list.
