Roots” ably defends the place of devotions in contemporary Catholic life. all those seemingly little devotions and sacramentals, actually possess the power to give form and thought to the great mysteries of the Faith and are therefore essential in the life of every Catholic. As a former Protestant Evangelical minister, Scott Hahn is a true scholar who has found the Catholic Faith. Nevertheless, he retains a childlike enthusiasm that is refreshing in one so solidly traditional or orthodox. I have to confess that, for me, discovering Catholic devotional treasures was not always easy. Initially the devotion to The Divine Mercy did not attract me. My reaction was: "Who needs this ? … we already we already have the Sacred Heart Devotion." What changed my mind? The persistence of people, the kind of confessions I heard on Divine Mercy Sunday, and the remarkable "message" of the Divine Mercy itself. That “message” and the image became like a powerful magnet. I pray the chaplet of Divine Mercy often, if not daily. I light candles before the icon for important intentions. From St. Faustina's Diary, I find the "Mandate of Mercy" and the challenge of "Complete Trust” fresh and yet familiar. They resonate so well with the Christ we know from the Gospels. Jesus told St. Faustina: I demand from you deeds of Mercy which are to rise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse yourself from it ... Even the strongest faith is of no avail without works (742)… If a soul does

    ENDURING MERCY AND DEVOTION

“Give thanks to to the Lord; for He is Good, His Mercy endures forever.”

Like many clergy and religious of my generation, I entertained “a post-conciliar prejudice.” After Vatican II, it was popularly held that liturgical and devotional life were at odds. Devotion was viewed as a “substitute" for liturgy or an obstacle to community participation in the Mass. But, as I would discover, individualistic, unintellectual “pietism” is not the same thing as devotional piety. Pietism does compete with liturgy, and is an inferior substitute for it. Contrary to what I had been led to believe, once I began parish ministry, I found that people with a rich devotional life were more likely to participate fully in the Liturgy, even on a daily basis. The late Fr. John Hardon approached "devotion" with precision and clarity: Essential to devotion is readiness to do whatever gives honor to God, whether in public or private prayer (worship) or in doing the will of God (service…) devotedness is ultimately rooted in a great love for God. The etymology of the Latin "devotion” is quite revealing. It comes from the root word for “vow.” Devotion, as an attitude, forms believers into strongly committed, God-centered people… people who bring to the Liturgy a deep variety of prayer experience. People taught me to value devotions. Their personal holiness gave their spirituality credibility. I began to see that devotion to the rosary, scapular, "miraculous medal,” the saints or the Blessed Virgin was not the problem. Congregational “self-consciousness” was. It created too great an emphasis on “us” rather than God. Devotion safeguarded sincerity and authenticity in corporate worship. I came to see devotion, even in all its diversity, as a touchstone for true Catholic unity. In the April 4 edition of Our Sunday Visitor, Scott Hahn was interviewed in an article, The Power of Pius Practices. Scott Hahn is a celebrated convert to Catholicism, a professor at Franciscan University, at Stuebenville, Ohio, EWTN personality and author. Scott Hahn's latest book, “Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical

not exercise mercy in some way, it will not obtain My mercy on the day of judgment (1317).

And which one of us does not need to hear more on “Complete Trust?”

I have opened my heart as a living fountain of mercy. Let all souls draw life from it. Let us approach this sea of mercy and trust… The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is trust (1578).

I am impressed by these revelations. They emphasize the supreme love of Christ as the Divine Mercy. I hope that, on this Divine Mercy Sunday, many will avail themselves of Communion, Adoration, Confession, recitation of the Chaplet and veneration of the icon of the Divine Mercy. Many graces await us. But should you still ask the question, I did: “Who needs this?” I pray that the answer may be the same as the one I received: "YOU NEED IT… WE ALL NEED IT.” “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”

    - Fr. Luczak

    "THE ABC'S OF MERCY"

The message of mercy is that God loves us- all of us, no matter how great our sins. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we can call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. It is a message we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC. Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. Be Merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to ex-tend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us.. Completely Trust. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will re-ceive.

    Financial Update

There is a of lot information in this week’s financial update. The results for March unfortunately fell below budget by $2,800. This was primarily the result of a lower Palm Sunday Collection. The initial results of the Easter Collection show that we are close to achieving our budgeted target. Next week we will update the results of the Easter collection and the Deficit Reduction Collection.

Our thanks to all our parishioners who have continued their generous support of the parish with their time, talent and treasure in these difficult times.

National Healthcare Decisions Day Set for Friday National Healthcare Decisions Day is a countrywide effort to “ensure that all adults with decision-making capacity…have the information and opportunity to communicate and document their healthcare decisions.” The goal is to get adults to execute their written advance care plans – living will and health care power of attorney. The initiative is the brain child of Nathan Kottkamp, a healthcare attorney who knew how “uncertainty about patients’ wishes can lead to tragic results.” Why make your wishes known? If, in the event of a life-threatening injury or illness, you could not specify your choices for curative or comfort care, your family & doctors would be forced to make those choices for you. Without your input to guide them, they’d be challenged to make difficult choices that may or not agree with your preferences. In recognition of Friday’s event, you might review your documents to see that they continue to reflect the end-of-life care you want. If you’ve yet to complete them, begin the process by talking with your loved ones about your choices. Let them know your feelings & values & see whom would best serve as your healthcare power of attorney. Fill out the papers & provide copies for your agent, physician & other important parties. For information about advance care planning & advance directive forms, contact me at 967-1094. Pat Kellen, Parish Nurse, Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues

2011 The Mass Book is now open. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one in-tention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 sti-pend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses of-fered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish.

A very special thank you to the music ministry who added much beauty and reverence to Lent and Holy Week services this year. Our teen choir, adult choir, cantors and instrumentalists put in many hours of practice to learn the difficult repertoire chosen for this year. The adults took home rehearsal CDs so they could practice in addition to regular choir time. On the Wednesday of Holy Week, the adult choir rehearsed until 10:00pm, knowing they would be back for the next three nights and Easter morning. The teamwork attitude was a wonderful thing to behold. The teens had their regular rehearsal on Wednesday and then came back on Thursday for an extra two hour rehearsal and worked their voices for the full two hours before having a pizza break. I must admit that this is the first time in my career that a group of teens has ever said, "Let's wait for the pizza and sing the last half hour instead." The cantors gathered as an ensemble to rehearse for an extra two hours for the lovely music which enhanced the Seven Last Words service. Having musical talent is a wonderful thing. Choosing to share it with God and with others is truly a calling. We here at St. Isaac Jogues are blessed with a talented and generous music ministry that continues to grow in ability, numbers and in dedication. I am truly blessed to be the director of such a fine group of friendly, devoted, patient and talented people. Thank you, music ministry. And thank you, St Isaac Jogues for your support and encouragement. Happy Easter to all! Lisa Hall

April 1, 2010 Dear Father Luczak and St. Isaac Jogues Parishioners, Easter Greetings from the grateful hearts of all of us at Maternity B.V. M. Parish. As always we are very thankful for the generous sharing check of$2,167.65 and Lenten almsgiving donation of $534.00. The almsgiving will probably go into our "new floor" fund which we are in the process of beginning. The sharing check will help to pay our bills and keep us afloat for another while. Some of you were able to be present with us at our Gala Banquet to celebrate our 100 years as a parish and school. It was truly a wonderful time for us all and we were so glad that some could be with us at the affair. We are celebrating throughout the year so maybe some others may come for our parish picnic in June, our ice cream social in July or our festival in August. We'll send you dates and you would be more than welcome. We all hope that the Easter season will be filled with the peace and the happiness that being witnesses to the Resurrection of Jesus brings to us all. Let us pray for each other. Sincerely yours, Father Tom Pelton

    CALLED TO BE WITNESSES

Thomas probably would be a good man to have in your corner in a modem-day courtroom. Even though he was willing to follow Jesus to death (John 11:16), he's not going to go out into the world now and attempt to give witness to the risen Christ when all he has at his disposal is hearsay evidence from the other apostles. No, he wants immediate evidence, a hands-on experience of Christ risen and present. The risen Christ ultimately provides Thomas with the experience and evidence he needs. Many of us, when we struggle with our faith or our belief, can identify with Thomas. But even when our faith is in relatively solid shape, we encounter people who are a bit like Thomas, who won't believe unless they are given credible experience of the risen Christ. We, then, are called to be witnesses. Like Christ, we cannot be ashamed to show the woundedness of the Body of Christ, the Church. We must even allow others to probe and examine the wounds. But we must also greet them with "Peace" and know that, in the glorious everlasting life of Christ risen from the dead, our wounds are not our final destiny. Our final joy is life transformed for eternity. © J. S. Paluch Co.

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the policy of St. Isaac Jogues to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parish-ioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the cor-rect spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our con-gregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
