THE FIFTY DAY CLIMB: A Call to Serve

Oh, beyond comprehension too vast for my little mind,

is the mystery of the Resurrection, is the wonder of the Easter nighttime sky,

the body of the Risen Christ the whole and holy Church to which I belong.

-Edward Hays Easter, like other holy days in our secularized society, can be reduced to 24 hours with a twist of tradition. Celebrate chocolate bunnies and colored eggs and the customary ham or lamb op-tion! In the morning it will be over - - except for leftovers, “krafty” casseroles and eggs deviled or chopped into salad. What a dreary thing Easter has become . . . It approaches a death-dealing political correct-ness! God forbid! But Christians - - especially Catholic and Orthodox Christians - - do not have to conform. They are, by their customs and ritual celebrations, shown a better way. Easter is not a single day, but fifty days. It offers the believer not a molehill of mediocrity, but a “mountain,” to climb. The Mystery of the Risen Lord opens the way to spiritual heights and awe-inspiring vistas. The Great Mystery has been compared to things that grow - - the mustard seed, wheat and even yeast that leavens dough. During this time, Jesus appears to offer us PEACE. Our fears, may make us trip up the mountain of the Lord, but Christ’s presence bears us up and accompanies us. Just as Jesus appears to His dis-ciples and goes unrecognized, so too it is easy for us to miss him in the helter skelter of our technol-ogy driven, materialistic world. But the Lord is there nonetheless. We need to listen to His Word, to continue our celebrations, and most of all, to recognize Him in the “Breaking of the Bread” and our commitment to charity and peace-building. In that way, Easter grows! Easter and Holy week were awesome this year. I do hope, as you assisted at the Triduum, Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, you found yourself inspired by the music and the “message” of the Litur-gies. I am especially grateful to Lisa Hall, the parish choirs and instrumentalists. There was a “quantum leap” in our celebrations because of their efforts. This short expression of gratitude should lead us to a higher expression of praise to God. These fifty days challenge us not only to recognize the Lord and be thankful for the service of others, but to know that we are being called: “FRIEND, COME UP HIGHER.” The “higher path” is the call to SERVICE. -Fr. Luczak

BULLETIN SICK LIST The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put peo-ple’s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give per-mission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person’s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person’s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
