Being a WriterBeing a WriterWriting Time!Writing Time!

10:45 – 11:3010:45 – 11:30

Our Plan• You will hear and discuss narrative text based on

factual information.

• You will learn how to build on one another’s thinking.

• You will write freely about things that interest you.

• You will use conference time responsibly.

Please listen carefully as I read the first page of this book to you. Make sure to pay attention to the illustrations as well.

Let’s continue to read the rest of the story.

Questions

• Who is the “I” in this story?

• What is unusual about the way the author uses “I” in this book?

• In Water Dance the author tells the story of the Earth’s water cycle from the water’s point of view.

• If you wanted to write a story in which “I” is a thing rather than a person, what could that thing be? – We will make a chart like this

“I” could be:The windA car

Talk to Your Partner

• I now want you and your partner to choose one of the ideas that we recorded on the sheet and come up with a couple of “I” sentences they could write from that thing’s point of view. – Turn and talk with your partner.– You may be asked to share your sentence after the

discussion.

5 Minute Quickwrite

• Turn to the next blank page in your writing notebook and pick another one of the ideas we wrote on the chart.

• Spend the next 5 minutes writing any “I” sentences that come to mind that would be from that thing’s point of view.

• Label your table of contents page “I” Quickwrite

Independent Writing

• For the next 25 -30 minutes you will write silently about one of the following. – Continue the “I” piece you started during today’s

quick write.

– Work on a piece you started earlier.

– Start a new piece of writing.

Pair Conferencing• Today you are going to meet with your partner

for a few minutes to discuss each other’s writing.

• Each of you will listen to the other’s story that they wrote today while they read it aloud. Then offer any special comments or gentle words of advice that they may have.

• Remember to get to your partner quietly and quickly. It is not a race, but we don’t want to waste our valuable time.

Reflect

• What went well in your pair conference today?

• What problems did you have? How will you avoid those the next time you confer?

• I noticed that some pairs had trouble hearing their partner because the room was so loud. How can we avoid that problem next time?
