The Barr Memorial Library is a library full of successful events known tothose in the Fort Knox community. From the Authors at your Library program to the Read to the Rhythm program, Barr Library is always finding innovative ways to reach people of all ages. As of late, its successhas been recognized by those outside of the local community. Last year, the Barr Memorial Library was named a Department of Defense PremierLibrary, becoming the first Army library to reach this status. Just a short 13 months following the recognition of this award, Michael Steinmacher,Barr Library director, and the Barr Memorial Library got word of beingnamed the 2014 Library of Congress FEDLINK Library of the Year. Thisprestigious award is given once a fiscal year to a library with a staff size of11 or more.

Steinmacher has been at Barr Memorial Library for seven years and before that he spent ten years working at the Louisville Free Public Library.Steinmacher describes his time here at Barr Memorial Library with a smileon his face. He talks of the evolution of the library from a place where onlyinformation is gathered, to a place where you can get information as wellas share ideas. He said he envisions the next step in libraries’ evolution tobe not only a place where information is obtained and ideas exchanged, but a place where staff assist customers in a creative process that produces tangible results. Steinmacher’s favorite part about working atBarr Memorial Library is the people they take care of. He says that timechanges, people change and the mission changes; but ultimately it is always all about the customer. Steinmacher says he loves “serving peoplewho selflessly choose to serve the greater good.”

Steinmacher and his staff don’t do what they do to win awards, but theawards are a nice form of encouragement. “It validates everything we'vebeen doing the last six years” Steinmacher states when asked what itmeans to him to receive this award, “It shows that the larger world seeswhat we hear every day”, Steinmacher continues. As for what this awardmeans for the library, Steinmacher says “this demonstrates that just like everything else on Fort Knox, we are absolutely first class.” This recognition proves that not only is the Barr Memorial Library a leader inArmy libraries, but that it is also on par with public libraries.

Steinmacher was quick to point out that the winning of this prestigiousaward was all because of his staff members. He was also fast to explainthat it couldn't have been done without the support he was given fromcommand. They gave Steinmacher and his staff creative opportunity toexpand services to make the library what it is today.

This award will not stop the creativity and the drive of the library staff fromcontinuing to better the library. Steinmacher does state that “the comingyears for Barr Memorial Library will be challenging, reflecting the Armyand Fort Knox finding missions redefined.” He was sure to add “we are notgoing to let uncertainty stop us from continuing to be at the top of Armylibraries.”

Be sure to stop in Barr Memorial Library located at 62 W. Spearhead Division Avenue to see what all the fuss is about, and see for yourself whata truly special library it is.

Did you know that August is National Golf Month? What better way to celebrate than with an exciting round of golf onthe gorgeous greens of Lindsey Golf Course. Located just inside Chaffee gate on Fort Knox is the “safest place to playgolf,” according to Clyde Hill, PGA, the Golf Manager ofLindsey Golf Course. Lindsey is a PGA certified 18-holecourse with challenging game play for all skills and age levels that is open to the public year round. It offers competitive pricing for daily green fees and golf cart rentals. They also offer annual memberships that include unlimitedgreen fees, an annual USGA handicap, discounts on food andbeverages at the snack bar, discounts on merchandise in thegolf shop, and discounts on tournaments. You can also addan unlimited golf cart package for an additional fee.

Fort Knox Family and MWR is always looking for ways to improve the course. In fact, it recently completed a $300,000bunker renovation. Many bunkers on the course were movedto the front of the greens to place them in locations that aremore in play. According to Hill, “this gives it a better lookand a better view, and slightly increases the difficulty of the course.”

Various tournaments and scrambles are held at Lindsey GolfCourse throughout the season. These range from competi-tive play, to fun events to include golf outings, stroke playtournaments, match play events, and fun scramble events likeMoonlight Golf.

Lindsey Golf Course also housestheir Golf Shop where they selltop of the line merchandise at excellent rates. They have a wideselection of golf clubs, balls, shoesand apparel. “Our prices are a lotbetter than most places,” Hillmentioned, “a lot of our vendorshave military pricing which is at areduced rate compared to whatthey sell to most golf shops. When we get it at that price, thenwe pass that on to the consumer.”They also have golf clubs for rent to anyone who finds them-

selves in need of clubs for the day.

Lessons are available to anyone who feels they need to improve their skills. Many knowledgeable staff members are on hand to give tips and advice, as wellassist an amateur or expert on their techniques. Simplycall to set up an appointment.

In spring of 2015, Lindsey Golf Course hosted an annual golf show at the Sadowski Center. The show wassuch a success, Lindsey is going to host the 2ndAnnual Golf and Travel Show at Sadowski Center againin February 2016. This allows vendors to come andshow their newest products of the season, and give consumers the opportunity to purchase these items atdiscounted rates.

After a game of golf, you can always relax on the coveredpatio and enjoy some great food and cold beverages fromthe Lindsey Grill, located inside the clubhouse.

Lindsey Golf Course is also a great facility to host your nextsocial gathering. On their beautiful covered patio with agreat view of the greens, they can accommodate over 180people for any special event, such as wedding receptions,Hail & Farewells, and luaus. Catering is also available upon request.

If you want to support your local military here at Fort Knox, come play a game of golf at Lindsey Golf Course. Accordingto Hill, “playing golf here supports the military and the soldiers. All the money that is spent here stays here.”

What could be better than firing up the grill and cooking ourfavorite summer-time foods? Whether you use charcoal orgas grills, there are steps to take before grilling.

• The grill should be on a heatproof surface away frombuildings and overhanging trees. Never grill inside your home, even in an open garage.

• Inspect your grill, making sure the racks are clean, the cover fits, and there are no holes in the grill pan.

Charcoal Grilling

• A charcoal fire takes 30-45 minutes to reach the cookingheat.

Coals are at proper cooking temperature when gray ash forms evenly over them.

• Use about 30 briquettes to cook one pound of meat. A five-pound bag contains 75 to 90 briquettes. Make sure you have enough briquettes to cover the grill pan in a single layer.

Lighting a Charcoal Grill

• Stack the charcoal into a pyramid shape. Soak the charcoal with 1/2 cup of lighter fluid (never use gasoline!). Light the charcoal with a long handled match or fire starter. As ash forms, arrange the coals with long handled tongs into a single layer. Don't squirt lighter fluid onto hot coals, the fluid could catch on fire and burn you.

• Lighter fluid is one of the top causes of grilling related injuries, creates a great deal of petroleum based pollution, and is simply frustrating to work with. You can light your charcoal, save the environment and never burn off your eyebrows again by trying one of these methods: a charcoal chimney, an electric charcoal starter, or commercial charcoal starters.

Gas Grills

Use lava rocks, which come with the grill. The rocks are heated by thegas flame and cook like charcoal.

• Keep the rocks clean. If there is a buildup of grease you will have flare-ups.

• Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning or replacing the lava rocks.

• Lava rocks should be only one layer deep.

Cooking

• Never leave the grill alone during cooking. Flare-ups quickly become fires, and it's easy to overcook your food.

• Adding wood chips and chunks can add marvelous flavor to your food. Soak chips for one hour before scattering over the hot coals.

• Sauces containing sugar and fat will cause flare-ups and the food may burn. Generally, apply sauces during the last 10 minutes of cooking.

• Don't turn food too often, and use tongs instead of a fork. Piercing the food with a fork will release juices that you want in the food, and can cause flare-ups.

JUST GRILLIN’

Page 10: 8/15 Fort Knox "Opportunity Knox"

By Dwan Payne, Financial Readiness Counselor

Summer is nearing its end and it is almost ‘back to school’ time.Budgeting your back to school supplies can help keep costs at aminimum. Obvious ways to cut costs include: using coupons, shop-ping sales, buying store or generic brands, using loyalty cards ormaking do with items leftover from last year.

Many schools provide a supply list of what is required. This is eas-ier for a parent, but more costly, because in many cases, the list isgeared toward “specific products” vs. off-brand purchases thatcould save the consumer more money. Below are some helpful tipson how you can maximize school spending dollars.

1) Shopping at home. Before you go to the store, walk around the house to see what you can find on the supply list. Check the junk drawer for items such as pencils, rulers and calculators.

2) Only buy what you need. Make a list of what you need and only buy what is on the list. This will prevent overspending on unnecessary items.

3) Comparative shop. Compare store prices to one another. Watch the weekly sale circulars or Sunday sales promotions. Be careful – as larger retail stores change sale prices weekly to

lure shoppers in. This allows you to get more for your buck than at a discount store.

4) Wait for discounts. Shop SMART. Take advantage of markdowns on clothing, electronics, and shoes which usually occur in mid-August. Waiting until then could save as much as 20-40%.

5) Price matching. Some retail stores offer price matching. Don’t forget to take your sale ad.

6) Use the internet. Many on-line sites offer great prices, but make sure you shop at sites that offer free shipping. Shipping costs can really add up. If you have a favorite retailer, it is possible they may have downloadable coupons or other discounts.

7) Buy quality items. Don’t just grab the cheapest option. Spend time examining how the item is made. Spending less – often costs more in the long run as you end up replacing items more often. Consider how long you think the item will last. For example: back packs are expensive and needed; pay attention to quality.

9 knoxmwr.com

Page 11: 8/15 Fort Knox "Opportunity Knox"

8) Communication. Talk to the teacher if the supply list is unaffordable. Your child’s school may have special programs available.

9) Clothes. Spread out purchases throughout the year. Buy essential wardrobe needs, and be creative in mixing and matching clothes. Other options are: lay-a-way, thrift stores, consignment shops and yard sales. Research reveals better pricing at the END of the summer.

10) Lunch money. Are lunches part of your budget? Schools on the installation allow you to pay for lunches ahead of time. Consider if your family qualifies for reduced or free lunches.

11) Medical needs. Are your child’s immunizations up to date? Do they need a school physical for sports activities? You can call the Post Family Military Treatment Center to set up an appointment for your medical care.

12) Miscellaneous fees. Workbooks, lab and club fees, PTA dues, field trips and band costs. Estimate what you think your costs will be, and include this as a subordinate category within your school expense budget.

13) Back to school fairs? Many churches and local agencies have back to school bashes. This is a great opportunity to get what you need for free. Watch for messages on their marquees.

The Bottom Line? There are other expenses such as: computers, software, haircuts and footwear. It might not be a bad idea to putall your loose change in a jar. Be a savvy shopper. Sale flyers, a bitof patience and some creativity can help you save hundreds of dollars during this back to school season.

Ways to Maintaina Long Distance

FriendshipBy Armida Hoffman

The military lifestyle is one of rapid adjustment andconstant change of scenery. Whether you are a soldier, spouse, or dependent, you have to learn tomake friends swiftly, and modify yourself to thenew culture you have just arrived in. Makingfriends comes easy to a military family, but maintaining these friendships once either of youhave come on orders to a Permanent Change ofStation (PCS) is the difficult part.

Here are five ideas on how to keep and maintainlong distant friendships.

1. Constant ContactKeeping in touch on a monthly basis will provide a chance for thetwo of you to catch up. This will allow you to talk about where youboth are in your daily lives, and what plans or goals you have for thefuture. Do not wait too long to get in touch, doing so will give theperception that you are neglecting your friendship. Waiting toolong also runs the risk of feeling awkward or guilty, so you furtherput off making contact with friends.

2. Plan a TripInvite a friend to come visit you, or plan for you to visit them. Youboth will have an amazing time once you reconnect and remindeach other of how important your friendship is to one another. Although it is hard to plan to come together, if both of you arethousands of miles away, or several countries apart, the experienceof a great trip can bring you both even closer together. Plan tomeet up as often as you can.

3. Video ChatIt is easy to video chat these days. With the many different programs such as Skype and apps like OoVoo, you can keep intouch much easier than before. Use these programs to your advantage, and do not forget to chat with them on their birthdayand special occasions. Doing that will show them how much theymatter – no matter how far the distance.

4. Make them Feel ImportantIf you are going to make the effort to maintain a long distancefriendship, then show your friend they mean a lot to you. A simpleway to make them feel important is remembering noteworthydates. This will ensure that you are doing more than the minimum, and are taking a sincere interest in their lives.

5. Send the Occasional Care PackageAs with any relationship, a friendship must be worked on and keptrenewed. Surprise your friend with a care package of small items

they would enjoy. This small gesture can really help whenyou do not see each other very often. A care packagewill bring a smile and happiness to your friend, and willlet them know that you are thinking about them.

Using these tips can help you maintain a healthyand lasting long distant friendship with someone whomyou have come to know and trust. Having friends acrossthe country and around the world can open your eyes tonew horizons. In the Army, friendships are never temporary, and with a little effort, these friendships canturn into family.
