Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise Page | 1 Well what a week in Rotary it has been. It all started at the district conference in the Barossa, and ended at our brekky meeting listening to our RYPEN returnees. I’ll start with 9520 District Conference, this one was my second and it did not disappoint. I could only head up there Friday morning but I heard that those who went up earlier had a great night together Thursday evening. The venue for the conference was the Barossa Arts & Convention Centre and it was an amazing place for us to hear all the speakers and also have our Reel Event Display promoting to 500+ Rotarians in the Showcase Room. The speakers over the 3 days varied with the motivational from Ashleigh Moore a 3 time cancer survivor, to the thought provoking from Stuart Heal through to the hilarious Alan Hannaford. Spare time was spent seeing the sights and tasting some wonderful wines “The Journey from Vine to Winetheme really coming out here. I did get to see the most of the Barossa’s health system thanks to “Mulga Bill” Lindsay Davis trying to fly over the handle bars of his hire bike. To all those cyclists out there....texting is just as dangerous while riding as it is while driving!! The gala dinner was held at the Wolf Blass Visitor Centre and was a Great Gatsby theme. As you would have seen we had some great outfits worn on the night especially by the female contingent from our club. Meals were delicious and the wine flowed while the band kept most busy. It was good to see Kevin Roberts finally come out of his shell. An amazing night I am sure was had by all!! I was glad I went on the Sunday also to hear from the Youth Exchange students (Long and Short Term) and the GSE teams from here and Taiwan. Our own Carlo Montanelli also spoke on Sunday as well as a brief summary on Tuesday of his experiences over the past few weeks, including the Rock and Reef Trip. These initiatives are ones I am glad we have been a part of this year and hope we can continue to support in the future in whatever form they take. All up I must say I enjoyed some great fellowship with my fellow Rotarians and will try to get to Warnambool next year for the 2014 Conference. Click onto the Club’s and District’s Facebook Page for a broad range of photos from the Conference. It was great to have our RYPEN students return to the club on Tuesday to give us a brief presentation on their experiences up at Woodhouse. I dropped some nervous girls up there who transformed on their return into confident students who did not skip a beat with their speaking in front of the club. Tiana and Krystyna both went up to the camp with slightly different goals and ideas but both returned confident and ready to let us know how good their RYPEN experiences were. Another program I hope we continue to support.

Well what a week in Rotary it has been. It all started at the district conference in the Barossa, and ended at

our brekky meeting listening to our RYPEN returnees.

I’ll start with 9520 District Conference, this one was my second and it did not disappoint. I could only head

up there Friday morning but I heard that those who went up earlier had a great night together Thursday

evening. The venue for the conference was the Barossa Arts & Convention Centre and it was an amazing

place for us to hear all the speakers and also have our Reel Event Display promoting to 500+ Rotarians in the

Showcase Room. The speakers over the 3 days varied with the motivational from Ashleigh Moore a 3 time

cancer survivor, to the thought provoking from Stuart Heal through to the hilarious Alan Hannaford.

Spare time was spent seeing the sights and tasting some wonderful wines “The Journey from Vine to Wine”

theme really coming out here. I did get to see the most of the Barossa’s health system thanks to “Mulga Bill”

Lindsay Davis trying to fly over the handle bars of his hire bike. To all those cyclists out there....texting is just

as dangerous while riding as it is while driving!!

The gala dinner was held at the Wolf Blass Visitor Centre and was a Great Gatsby theme. As you would have

seen we had some great outfits worn on the night especially by the female contingent from our club. Meals

were delicious and the wine flowed while the band kept most busy. It was good to see Kevin Roberts finally

come out of his shell. An amazing night I am sure was had by all!!

I was glad I went on the Sunday also to hear from the Youth Exchange students (Long and Short Term) and

the GSE teams from here and Taiwan. Our own Carlo Montanelli also spoke on Sunday as well as a brief

summary on Tuesday of his experiences over the past few weeks, including the Rock and Reef Trip. These

initiatives are ones I am glad we have been a part of this year and hope we can continue to support in the

future in whatever form they take. All up I must say I enjoyed some great fellowship with my fellow

Rotarians and will try to get to Warnambool next year for the 2014 Conference. Click onto the Club’s and

District’s Facebook Page for a broad range of photos from the Conference.

I have left this in from last week - A reminder to you all to get out to your allocated club over the next 2-3

weeks to promote our Reel Event movie night coming up at the end of this month. It promises to be a bigger

and better event than last year’s inaugural show so we all need to get out and let the Rotary world know it is

on and hopefully sell a few tickets. Well done to Pamela, Kirsty and Mina in getting the packs ready for us

to go out and do this!! Remember this is a club event that requires everyone’s efforts to make a success.

See you all next Tuesday. Fines this week - $68.45.

President Greg

Australian History

1831 – Captain Collet Barker, original discoverer of the site for Adelaide, is killed by indigenous

Australians.

2006 – Two Tasmanian miners are found alive after being trapped underground for five days.

Beaconsfield Miners Brant Webb and Todd Russell.

World History

Thought for the Day 1: We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our

youth for the future.

Thought for the Day 2: I'm an idealist. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way.

It was such a good news/bad news type of week. The good news started with Tracy Johnstone

(Magill Club friend) tipping the correct Anzac Day result and nearest margin. The bad news is we

hadn't caught up with Tracy for her registration payment. That is similar to picking the winning

lotto numbers but forgetting to buy the ticket!! In more good news, Tracy has now arranged

payment. The bad news is she will have to try and win it back next week. However, the good news

continued with Tracy getting 9 right. The bad news is that only entitles her to a Whopper.

In other good news, Mark Thompson also tipped 9 correct. However, in bad news, he missed the

critical Anzac Day margin by the length of a battlefield. By comparison, Mark Martin was oh-so-

close with the Anzac Day margin but tipped the wrong team to win. Last man standing was John

Capoccia (Magill) who will collect this week’s prize. And in Round 6, we honour our NZ friends who

have trouble with the pronunciation of this number. The Round 6 prize will go to the tipper who

gets 6 right (and 6 only) with the closest margin. GOOD LUCK
