FINALIZE YOUR CAMPUS VISITS THIS SEMESTER!!

After you have developed a list of colleges that meet your criteria, it’s time to consider visits and interviews.  During the fall of your senior year is the time to begin calling, writing, or e-mailing the admission offices of colleges you remain interested in to make arrangements for at least one visit to campus.  Most college websites can be located by typing the name of the college or university followed by dot.edu, such as www.emporia.edu or by doing a general search through college resource web sites such as www.collegeboard.com.

Once you are on the main website check for a link on visiting the campus or setting up campus tours.  Although catalogs, view books, and college websites introduce you to a college, nothing equals the experience of seeing it for yourself.  Also plan to take at least one parent with you so they too can get the feel for the college you are considering.

Many colleges and universities sponsor “Senior Days” throughout the year to host seniors and their parents on campus for a day.  These days are extremely informational as they are designed to present all the information necessary in one day with all the people available to answer incoming freshmen questions.  Again, check with the college of your choice or visit their website for registration information regarding these days.

Two pieces of advice:1.    Don’t totally decide on a college or university until you have visited and experienced the campus

for at least a day.

2.    Choose the college or university that best suits your personal, social, and academic needs and goals.

******************************************************************************

PREPARING FOR A CAMPUS VISIT

When contacting the admissions office to set up a campus visit, request the following information and accommodations:

Tour of the campus

Tour or map of the town

Tour of the on-campus living facilities

Permission to visit a particular class or meet with a certain coach or department

A meeting with an admissions counselor

A meeting with the financial aid office

Time or a meeting with current students

Lunch reservations on campus

WHILE VISITING THE CAMPUS, BE SURE TO . . .

pick up a course catalog, college newspaper, brochures on special programs, a campus map, and extra applications.

look at yearbooks, bulletin boards, and posters around the campus.

talk to current students regarding their opinions of the college, its housing activities, academics, faculty, and living in the community itself.

REMEMBER, IT WOULD BE TOUGH TO MAKE A TWO OR FOUR YEAR COMMITMENT TO A COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY WITHOUT FIRST GETTING A FEEL

FOR THE PERSONALITY OF THE CAMPUS!

******************************************************************************

TIME TO NARROW YOUR COLLEGE SEARCH & BEGIN THE APPLICATION PROCESS

It is time to SERIOUSLY begin narrowing your college search and completing the application process for those colleges and universities you are considering attending next year.  WHY SO SOON? Every college has its own deadline system and usually there are many deadline hoops to jump through before the process is finalized. Those who apply early receive more scholarship and financial aid information simply because colleges don’t process scholarship applications until admission applications are accepted.

WAITING TO APPLY MAY COST YOU SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES!By contacting and researching your top college/university choices now, you will become familiar with not only the application process but also all the deadlines you are expected to meet.

HOW CAN I SELECT/CONTACT THE COLLEGE and/or UNIVERSITY OF MY CHOICE?  Begin searching the internet; most college and universities have websites available for prospective students to gain information.  The easiest way to access these websites is to do a search by name. General internet websites that will link you to various colleges include the following: www.collegeboard.com; www.petersons.com; www.collegeapps.com; www.collegenet.com; www.fastweb.com; www.zinch.com, and www.weapply.com.

******************************************************************************

TIME TO TAKE CHARGE OF PLANNING FOR YOUR FUTURE!

The best way to make things happen the way you want them to is to take charge of the preparation process.  That seems to be a very simple concept, but sometimes when it comes to planning your postsecondary education, it’s easy to procrastinate or expect others to do things for you.  Since your senior year is moving very quickly and the craziness of numerous deadlines has arrived, let’s focus on organization.

Tips to survive all the activities and deadlines of your senior year:

Prioritize your schedule  -  Keep your calendar up to date as you check the Daily Bulletin and the Senior Scoop.  Regroup on the weekend and enter events for the upcoming week so you begin each

Monday organized for the week and able to just ENJOY the flow of activities.

Organize all college-planning information  - Keep folders of colleges that are top priorities to you.

Be aware of and meet all application and scholarship deadlines  - Get in touch with colleges for admission and scholarship deadlines.

Respect others who are assisting you  - Talk to your teachers, coaches, mentors, parents, siblings, counselor, and principal, as well as college representatives for insight during your decision-making and application process.

******************************************************************************

THE COLLEGE ESSAY

If you are asked to write an essay, think of it as an opportunity to tell the college admissions committee who you are.  Here are a few tips and suggestions on writing an essay. (Tips taken from a College Admissions InfoGuide from the Woodburn Press.)

*  Be sure to follow the instructions with regards to length and subject matter.

*  Tell the reader something new – something that can’t be learned from your application or transcript.

*  Use concise, clear sentences and be yourself.

*  Give specific examples and write about the impact or affect that events have had on you. Instead of “I learned a lot from volunteering for Habitat for Humanity” write “Seeing the gratitude in Mr. Jones’ eyes made a lasting impression on me.  Never again will I take having a house to come home to for granted . . .”

*  Write an essay that could only be written by you.

*  Use the essay to explain a part of your record that may look questionable.  “Getting a D in Spanish my freshman year taught me a very valuable lesson . . . “

*  Have at least two other people read your essay.

*  Admissions officers read lots of essays.  Take the time to write an essay that stands out.

******************************************************************************

ESSAY WRITING TIPS

Be yourselfSpend as much time thinking about it as writing it

Ask people for their inputHighlight growth  - They want to know you are mature enough to succeed on the college campus

Keep your introduction brief and captivatingDemand 100% from every sentence

Use original languageStay within the word count  - limit your topic!

Write in the active voiceLeave time for rewriting

Be sure to include the topic or question you are answering at the top of the pages as necessaryPlace your name at the top of each page

Accentuate the positivePursue perfection!  Quadruple-check your essay!

Keep in mind that this essay could place your application above another applicant’s for admission,

and it could mean scholarship dollars for you!

******************************************************************************

TIPS for WINNING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

Apply only if you are eligible.  Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully.  Make sure you are eligible before you send in your application!

Complete the application in full.  If a question does not apply to you, note that on the application. Do not leave a question blank. Be sure to supply all additional supporting materials, including transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays.

Follow directions.  Provide everything that is required.  However, do not supply things that are not requested; you could be disqualified.

Neatness counts!  Always type your application if possible, or if you must print, do so neatly and legibly using blue or black ink.  Make a couple photocopies of all the forms before you fill them out. Use the copies as working drafts as you develop your application packet.

Write an essay that makes a strong impression.  The key to writing a strong essay is to be personal and specific.  Include concrete details to make your experience come alive: the who, what, where, and when of your topic.  The simplest experience can be monumental if you honestly present how you were affected.

Watch all deadlines.  To help keep yourself on track, impose your own deadline that is at least two weeks prior to the official deadline.  Use the buffer time to make sure everything is ready on time. Do not rely on extensions - very few scholarship providers allow them at all.

Make sure your application gets where it needs to go.  Put your name on all pages of the application.  Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.

Keep a back-up file in case anything goes wrong.  Before sending the application, make a copy of the entire packet.  If your application goes astray, you will be able to reproduce it quickly!

Give it a final “once-over”.  Proofread the entire application carefully.  Be on the lookout for misspelled words or grammatical errors.  Ask a friend, teacher, or parent to proofread it as well.

Ask for help if you need it.  If you have problems with the application, do not hesitate to call the funding organization.

Make sure letters of recommendation are addressed properly.  Make sure the letters are addressed to the organization whose scholarship you are applying for and that they are current. Give the recommending person information regarding the scholarship and what kind of information needs to be included in the letter.  Be sure to allow time for the letter to be written!

******************************************************************************

SEARCHING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS!!

Don’t ever pay a fee for a scholarship or financial aid search!  There are plenty of FREE ones available to you on the internet!

10 SCAM WARNING SIGNS:

**  FEES:  You shouldn’t have to pay to search for or apply for scholarships.

**  CREDIT CARD or BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION NEEDED:       You should never have to give credit card or bank account information to        scholarship providers.

**  SCHOLARSHIP GUARANTEE:  No one can guarantee that you’ll win a scholarship because no

one can control scholarship judges’ decisions.  Also, be wary of “high success rates” - they

usually do not refer to actual award winners.

**  NO WORK INVOLVED:  Legitimate scholarship applications require time and energy!

**  NO CONTACT INFORMATION:  Legitimate sponsors should provide contact information.  If

they do not supply a valid e-mail address, phone number, and mailing address (not a PO box)

upon request, that could be the sign of a scam.

**  UNSOLICITED SCHOLARSHIPS:  If you are called to receive an award for which your never

applied, be alert  - it’s most likely a scam.

**  PRESSURE TACTICS:  Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into applying for a scholarship,

especially if the sponsor is asking you to pay.

**  CLAIMS OF “EXCLUSIVE” SCHOLARSHIPS:  Legitimate sponsors won’t restrict knowledge

about their award to a single search service.

**  AN OFFICIAL-SOUNDING NAME OR ENDORSEMENT DOESN’T AUTOMATICALLY

MEAN LEGITIMACY:   A sponsor may use words like “national”, “education”, or “federal”

or have an official-looking seal, but might still be a scammer.  Also, the federal government and

the US Dept. of  Education do not endorse private businesses.

**  YOUR QUESTIONS AREN’T ANSWERED DIRECTLY:  If you can’t get a straight answer

from a sponsor regarding their application, what will be done with your information, or other questions, proceed with caution.
