ALADDIN EXCURSION Thank you Mr Smith for organising a school trip to Aladdin the Musical. This was a very popular- selling out in record time. What a wonderful opportunity for the children to experience live theatre.

YEAR 2 INVENTIONS EXPOCongratulations to the Year 2 children for their creativity in presenting inventions. We are proud that the children used their imaginations to create a possible future product, the confidence, quality and communication skills they displayed in explaining their invention.

FATHERS DAY STALL Thank you to the parents who helped organise the Father’s Day stall. The children appreciate the opportunity to purchase a gift for their dad and we are grateful for the parents in conducting this.

ITALIAN PROGRAM Professor Russell Cross from Melbourne Graduate School of Education has requested that Seabrook PS showcase their innovative approaches to Languages. As such, a group of teachers will be visiting on Friday, September 8 to view a Music/Italian lesson and see what Seabrook has been accomplishing with our CLIL work. (CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning and refers to teaching subjects through a foreign language.) He believes that what Elena Pirovano and our school has achieved in terms of the Music/Italian lessons would be a great example to share with other teachers. A short follow-up session will then take place in the library. Congratulations to our Italian team on their quality work.

Prep 0AF & 5SK

Students in Prep AF have been having a wonderful time working with their 5SK buddies to learn how to use directional and positional language to program our Bee Bot robots. Bee Bots are small robots shaped like beetles that can be programmed to move in different directions. In our first lesson, we explored how these work and what the different buttons were for. In the next lesson, Grade 5s set up obstacle courses for our Bee Bots using masking tape. The challenge was to program the Bee Bots to navigate these paths from start to finish. The students did a fabulous job writing down the program for these steps with their buddies. They had to collaboratively work together to problem solve using creative thinking. Students also learnt how to make a prediction on how many steps the Bee Bot robots would need to reach the end of each path before trying it out. They then used the results to change and modify their programs before adding the next steps.

In another fabulous example of students learning from each other using innovative technology, Prep AF and 5SK went on a scavenger hunt around the school to find different locations and things. Students used iPads and QKR technology to scan different bar codes around the school, which gave them clues on the next place they needed to visit. Along they way they had to collaborate to undertake set tasks. Students worked extremely cooperatively to complete the hunt.

Well done Prep AF and 5SK on excellent teamwork!

Prep extended stay

What a wonderful time the Prep students had at their Extended Stay last Tuesday. As the bell rang at 3:10pm to dismiss all the other year levels, the Preps were enjoying their afternoon snack, giving them lots of energy for all the activities that the Prep teachers had in store for them. After refueling, it was off to the courtyard for lots of fun and games.

The activities included bean bag throw, egg and spoon race, dress-up footy relay, chalk drawing, dancing, scoops and tunnel ball. The Stay ended with a dance off where the Preps were able to show off their best dance moves and have a boogie with the Prep teachers.

The day was a success and it was great to see so many smiling faces during the Prep Extended Stay.

Grade 2 Inventions Exhibition

The year two students have been inquiring into the Central Idea “Ideas and creativity change the way we live”. The Inventions Exhibition is an inspiring experience that provides a fantastic opportunity for students’ to apply their knowledge and understanding of the Central Idea.

Throughout the Inventions Exhibition, students’ are involved in a collaborative, trans-disciplinary inquiry process that involves students identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real life issues and problems. Students celebrate and explore multiple perspectives, while demonstrating independence and responsibility for their learning.

Students’ exhibit the attributes of the IB Learner Profile and IB Attitudes by taking action as a result of their learning. The students undertaking the Exhibition are independent, confident and curious and allows them opportunities to showcase their passion for learning.

The Inventions Exhibition was very successful. Thanks to all parents, Year 1s and Year 3s and other staff members who attended the Exhibition, the children really enjoyed sharing their inventions with you. Also a big thank you to the Year Two team for preparing the students and for planning the exhibition. The students did an amazing job with their presentations!

4EN

On Thursday the 31st of August 4EN went into the BER building to code the Dash and Dot’s. Students had been practicing their coding skills on code.org and scratch before moving onto coding the robots. These are their refections.

John: I felt good. Todays activity was about dash and dot coding. I learnt how to use dash and dot. I enjoyed myself. It was challenging completing the ‘knock knock’ joke puzzle.

Aiman: I felt good with playing on the iPad and the robot. I worked with Alannah. I wasn’t co-operative because it was confusing at times.

Angus: I worked well with Harrison. We got stuck on the ‘knock, knock’ joke puzzle. We only got dash. Doing coding in class helped a bit for Blocky. Next time, I will have a better go for the knock, knock joke puzzle.

Alannah: I think that I did well, I learnt how to control Dash. I found some puzzles challenging such as: The ‘knock knock’ joke and the alien one. I worked well with my partner.

Olivia: I did well today in coding. I worked well with Bianca. Our bot was called Gabby, and we used an app called Blockly. What I found challenging was a task that you had to add a lot of codes.

Lucas: I feel good. I learnt about dot and dash and it was hard when we had to do the Knock Knock joke one.

Bianca: The focus of the session was to code a robot. I feel sad that we can’t play with them anymore. I learnt how to code, I will work on completing all the Blockly (App) challenges the thing that was challenging was coding the robot. I enjoyed playing go.

Lachlan: I felt excited. I felt challenged trying to code the robot to move. I learnt how to make a robot talk and move. Coding helped with this activity.

Chloe: I did well, I learnt that you can code a robot. I worked with Airlea and Shashwat with our Dash robot Barry and our Dot Dave. I thought level 3 was challenging because ours always deleted.

Aliyah: I did well, I worked well with John. I learnt about making c o o r d i n a t e s for Dash. What I found challenging was how to work Dash and Dot at the start but now I know, and I was happy to get Dot.

Phoenix: Today I learnt about Dash and Dot. I learnt how to use the program and the apps such as Blockly. The thing I found challenging was making him tell ‘knock knock jokes’. Next time I would like to try the Go app to make him say funny things and also do funny movements.

Danny: My dash is name Phil, me and Phoenix made it follow you when you said hi. Next time, I will try do more tricks. l learnt it was easy to control. What I found challenging was tring not hit other groups robots with my robots.

Airlea: I liked todays activity. I worked with Chloe and Shashwat. We controlled two robots today, there was one called Barry (Dash) it was tall and big. There was a little one called Dave (Dot) he was so adorable. It was easy to move him but hard on the 3rd level puzzle.

Al zya: I felt good about today’s activity. I learnt how to control a robot by coding. I found that completing the ‘knock knock’ puzzle was very challenging. I worked with Paros and our robots name was ‘Sally’. I will work on improving my coding.

Yoyo: I learnt how to program Dash and Dot. Next time, I will program Dash and Dot to do different tricks. Code.org and Scratch helped me prepare to program Dash and Dot.

Paros: This task was extra fun. I learnt how to control Dash named Sally. I would like to do this again, I found it challenging to do the ‘cop and thief’ puzzle and controlling him and sort of worked well with my partner.

Sonia: Today for maths we went to the grade 3 building and we played with Dash. My robot was called Bubbles. I was with Lucas and we played coded Bubbles. Some levels were a little challenging. I am now more confident with coding, it was great.

Harrison: I think I went ok doing Dash .I understand path but I didn’t really understand the other Apps.

Jayden: Robot used – Dash, iPad Apps - Blockly, Go App. I used the Go app to move and steer Dash. I need to do more coding practice to be able to use the Blockly App.

Riley: I learnt how to make dash and dot move with codes my partner was Yoyo. I had fun.

Grade 6 Exhibition

Dear Seabrook Community,

The Grade 6 PYP Exhibition 2017 is a celebration of the student’s PYP journey at Seabrook Primary School. Exhibition is an inquiry experience that allows the students to exhibit the Five Essential Elements of the PYP including knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action. The Exhibition is a significant event in the life of a PYP student, where students will have the opportunity to share with the community their independence and responsibility for their own learning.

This year the Exhibition is under the Transdisciplinary Theme of Sharing the Planet. It is an inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.

The Year 6 students are currently investigating and researching their Central Idea, lines of inquiry and student questions. They are also reflecting on the inquiry process and keeping evidence of learning throughout the stages of the Exhibition. Students are also working closely with their mentors and classroom teachers with planning the presentation of their Exhibition.

The Year 6 staff and students, would like to invite the Seabrook Community to their Exhibition on Wednesday the 20th of September from 7:00 - 8:00pm. The Exhibition will take place in the BER Building.

Grade 1 Swimming Program

Notes have gone home about the Grade 1 Swimming Program. It commences week 2 next term (16th October). The program goes for 5 consecutive Monday’s (apart from the Monday prior to Melbourne Cup- as the pool is closed for the weekend) and the cut off for a guaranteed spot in the program will be Friday 15th of September.

Any spots available after that date will be announced in case you are still interested. We need to get groups and buses organised in advance, which is why we need to have an idea of numbers prior to the holidays. The cost is very reasonable for 5 x 45 minute sessions plus bus transport to and from the pool ($110). If you have any queries please see your child’s teacher, Mr. Ganley or Mrs. Golomb at the office.
