One for All and All for One

In Solidarity, Darrick Meyer

Brothers and Sisters, in my last arti-cle I mentioned this phrase for a rea-son. As you well know 2010 will be a very busy and interesting year. Not only is our contract up for negotia-tions but also Cessna and Bombar-dier. This will be a time when we will all have to stand strong, side by side, in solidarity, in order to have our voices heard, and our goals accom-plished.

“ A struggle is going on in the na-tion of the world between the op-pressors and oppressed of all countries, a struggle between capital and labor which must grow in intensity from year to year and work disastrous results

to the toiling millions of all na-tions if not combined for mutual protection and benefit.”

This is a quote from the book “Labors Untold Story” pg. 90 and written in 1886 by the American Federation of Labor, an organiza-tion that is in effect our forefathers in unionization. The battles over a hundred years ago are the same as today’s. This was a time when work-ers fought and died fighting for what is right. Unlike today when we have members who cross the line instead of fighting for what we all deserve.

So take a look around you. How many members do you have in your shop? Probably not 100%! Granted it is very hard to do in a large shop,

however we need to continue to or-ganize! How much do you know about your union and it’s workings? Until I began to participate more and more, I did not realize how hard our elected brothers and sisters really have to work. This is all done volun-tarily, and the reward is knowing you are helping your brothers and sisters achieve what should be rightfully ours.

This is what solidarity really means. Standing beside one another fighting for what the companies should be sharing with all employees, not just the management side of the coin. Think of it this way, were we not to stand together for what we want and deserve, our wages would be in the minimum wage category give or take

a few dollars (or pennies).

Being a union member demands that we stand in solidarity with our broth-ers and sisters making our voice loud and strong! Think about it! Do you want your wages and benefits cut any further or shouldn’t we be work-ing to get back what was taken? Bot-tom line, STAND STRONG, OR-GANIZE, AND LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD.

Solidarity and the Union By Darrick Meyer

Union 101 (From the IAMAW Organizing manual)

MYTH # 1: “I CAN’T AFFORD TO JOIN THE UNION.” FACT: YOU CAN’T AFFORD NOT TO JOIN THE UNION. In a union, as in life, you get what you pay for.

For nickels and dimes you’ll get a nickel and dime union. Not being able to afford to join is only true if you’re sure you’ll never need the union to protect your rights.

You can afford not to join if you’re sure you’ll always get your fair share of overtime or not be forced to work it. You can afford not to join if you’re sure you’ll get equal opportunity for promotion or differential pay for more hazardous work assignments or any benefit ne-gotiated and protected by the contract. Your dues are an investment that literally pays off every year when you receive your wage Increase. In addition, the return on your investment really pays off over the long-term as wage increases compound. Dues are tax deductible. Over the past 50 years the union has negotiated your wages, healthcare benefits, overtime pay, pension, be-

reavement leave, and other benefits that you enjoy every day. No one makes a profit from the dues you pay to the I.A.M. Every penny is ultimately used for activities and services that benefit the membership. Dues pay for everything from arbitration cases to negotiating contracts. Dues allow the union to lobby for better bene-fits, wages, safety conditions, equal rights and job security. The union is only as strong

as its membership. Won’t you quit

being “the weakest link”

and join with us

Nghia’s Story By Nghia Nguyen

My name is Nghia (Nea) Nguyen and I joined the union eight months ago. I am also a member of the Human Rights Committee.

I have worked in the Aircraft Industry for about twelve years now, however, I have worked for small companies that did not have a union. When I was of-fered a job at Spirit, I did not hesitate for a minute to join the union.

Working all these years at the smaller aircraft compa-nies, you did not have rights. You might have had a voice but it was never heard. Therefore, now that I am part of the union I not only finally have rights but my voice is heard and my opinion matters.

Editor’s Note: There is a Communica-tions Committee meeting every Thurs-day at 3:45 at the Local. We will be pre-senting flyers and articles, like the one above, to prepare the membership for 2010. If anyone is interested, call the Local and sign up. L. S.

To me joining the union was very important. I did not just want to join the union I wanted to be an ac-tive member and help ensure that all workers are treated fairly.

I am very proud to be living in America and most of all proud to be an American. As a nation we need to do everything in our power to keep jobs in America and stop OUR jobs from being outsourced to other countries. It is our job to unite together and fight these companies on this issue. It not only affects us but it also affects our children and many generations to come.

Labor Quote EUGENE V. DEBS:

“Ten thousand times has the labor movement stumbled and bruised itself. We have been enjoined by the courts, assaulted by thugs, charged by the mili-tia, traduced by the press, frowned upon in public opinion, and deceived by politicians. 'But notwithstanding all this and all these, labor is today the most vital and potential power this planet has ever known, and its historic mission is as certain of ultimate reali-zation as is the setting of the sun.”

Fruits of Our Labor There is a cook book being sold at the District called “Fruits of Our Labor.” All of the recipes have been submitted by Union members and their families from Locals and Dis-tricts of the Southern Territory, Transportation Department, Woodworkers & NFFE of the Machinists Union.. The cost is $8.00.

I will print a recipe each month from this book, start-ing with any entries form LL839. Editor

SWEET POTATO PIE 3 lbs. yams 1 1/2 c. sugar 1 can evaporated milk 2 eggs 1/2 t. nutmeg 1 t. vanilla 1 stick butter Dash of cinnamon

Pre-heat your oven to 400°. Boil the yams with the skin on until a fork or butter knife causes the yams to easily break apart when inserted. Cool yams slightly, then place in a colander and run cold water over them to assist you with removing the skins since the yams will still be pretty hot. Beat yams with mixer on medium speed, stopping fre-quently to remove strings from the beaters.

Once the strings are removed, add butter and continue to mix. Then add remaining ingredients. You may need to adjust the nut-meg and sugar to your tastes. Continue mixing your batter until it has a nice smooth consistency. The batter should not be thin or runny, and it should not be too thick either. If too thick, try adding a little more evaporated milk (by the tablespoon) until the batter is smooth. Pour your batter into your favorite unbaked 9" or 10" pie shell. Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour.

Brush the edges of your pie shell with ice water to prevent it from burning before the pie is actually done. Brown specks on the top of the pie are an indication that your pie is done. You can also insert a knife in the middle of the pie, and if it comes out clean it's done. Let cool for at least 1 hour before cutting and serving.

A record amount for the United Way was raised during the 2008

fund-raising campaign By Larry Stafford

900 people were present when the United Way of the Plains announced a total of $16,360,050 being raised during their 2008 campaign.

The total was revealed during its Cam-paign Victory Luncheon at Century II Convention Hall on November 13th. This year’s amount exceeded last year’s amount raised (which was $16,353,834) and is the most ever raised by United Way of the Plains.

The Unions were well represented at this event. There was one Corporate vice-President, One SPEEA Representative, One Security Representative and four Lo-cal Lodge 839 members present. The cor-porate gift was $300,000.00 and the Em-

ployee gift was $2,100,000.00 for a total of $2,400,000.00. It is the contributions from eve-ryone at Spirit, especially the Union contribu-tions that make the total so awe inspiring.

Welcome To our New IAMAW LL839 Members

Bountiful Harvest Basket

By Kathy Petersen

At the November meeting of Local Lodge 839, the Thanksgiving basket was won (again) by Stan and Monica Chapman. Stan is a Trustee at the Local Lodge and

works in the Na-celle building on first shift. His wife, Monica, often volunteers at union events and helps out whenever we are short-handed in the kitchen. The

contents of the basket included the mak-ings for a Thanksgiving dinner. It had been suggested at the meeting that it would be a nice idea for the winner of the basket to share the “bounty” in some way with someone else. The Chapman’s wasted no time in making that their mis-sion. Stan was recovering from surgery himself, but he didn’t let that deter him from reaching out to help someone else!

It just so happened that a member had stopped by the Local Lodge to see if there

was any way she could get some assistance. She needed some food for her family. Stan and Monica donated not only the contents of the basket, but items they had gathered from their own pantry. Additionally, they purchased more food and necessities from Dillon’s grocery store and added those to their donation. When the member came to pick up the “basket”, she was very excited and thankful to receive the food and needed items. The generous contribution from Stan and Monica was much appreciated.

These fundraising baskets, special drawings and items purchased from the Kitchen make it possible to help members when they are struggling, as well as helping those in the neighboring community. A big, heart-felt “Thank you” goes out to ALL who pur-chase tickets for these baskets each month, for it is YOU who make it possible to con-tinue to raise money to help those people who need a little extra help around the holi-days. Please continue to buy those cheese-burgers and purchase drawing tickets; there are a lot of our brothers and sisters having a hard time making ends meet. The December drawing will be for a Christmas basket. You could be the Lucky win-ner of this extra-special holiday basket!

Remember, there will be sign-up sheets located at the January Local Lodge meeting. This is your opportunity to become a part of the Community Services Committee, or any other committee that you are interested in joining. Most of the committees require only a couple of hours per month of your volunteer time. It is a great learning experience for those members that want to get a little more involved. We can do a lot more if we have more people that are willing to donate a little bit of their time! Thanks for a great year!

Have a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us on the Community Services Committee of Local Lodge 839.
