12 oz. pkg. cream cheese softened 1/4 c. sugar 3 T. Milk
Mix together and spread on bottom of 9 X 13” pan. Layer with fresh or thawed strawberries,
bananas and pineapple. Spread 1 carton of Cool Whip on this. Drizzle with chocolate syrup and top with
nuts and cherries. ******************************************************************
Chicken-Corn Chowder Soup 3/4 c. sliced celery 1/4 c. margarine or butter 3/4 c chopped onion 2 cans cream of chicken soup 1/2 tsp. basil 1 can whole kernel corn Dash of pepper 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/4 c. milk Saute celery and onion in margarine till tender. Add milk, soup, corn and seasonings. Heat until chowder is hot, but not boiling.

From the Honeybee Class-(3 year olds)
Dear Honeybee Families,
December has flown right by… This month we
learned the letter Dd, Ll, Cc, and Pp, our numbers 8
and 9, and the star shape. We talked about baby
Jesus’ birth, giving and sharing, and Christmas. The
Honeybee teachers are so proud of our friends, they
did a wonderful job with their songs at our Christmas
program.
Next up for January, we will be learning the letters
Ee, Oo, and Rr, the numbers 10 and 11 and the
snowflake shape. We will be talking about winter,
winter animals, multicultural, and winter around the
world. Our bible lesson will be Joseph’s Coat of
Many Colors.
We look forward to the coming year with our
Honeybees and wish your families a very blessed

Happy New Year Snails!
Thank you! Thank you to the Snails class for doing a
super job singing at the Christmas program, and
also a tremendous thank you to all those who helped
make out Christmas parties a fun success. And
another grateful thanks for all the thoughtful gifts that
were given!
The Snails had lots of fun learning all about
Christmas, giving and sharing, and about baby
Jesus being born. We look forward to starting off the
New Year learning all about Winter, Winter Animals,
Multicultural, and learning about Winter Around the
World. We will also learn the colors blue and white,
numbers 10 and 11, the snowflake shape, and
letters Ee, Oo, and Rr.

Welcome 2014! Happy New Year!
I’d like to start off by thanking all of our families for
making our classroom Christmas parties happy and
fun filled with great food and treats for the children.
Our Christmas program was a great success and it
was amazing to hear all of the children sing, they all
did an awesome job.
Now with the holiday season is behind us, school
will resume back to our daily routine Monday,
January 6th.
I’d like to add how blessed we feel having received
such great support from all our families in the event
of finding out Sally’s condition. Please keep praying
that this too will also be behind us and that her
recovery will soon bring her back to us.

Here we are, over another year. We thank God for
our children that we are very blessed with, and the
families who are so kind to us. I hope every one of
our families had a blessed Christmas and that God
will always be there for you and your family.
The children learned about the real meaning of
Christmas, baby Jesus their Savior, making a star,
and learning numbers 8 and 9. This month we are
making snowflakes, learning the letters Ee, Oo and
Rr, and numbers 10 and 11. We are excited for the
coming year to see what God has for us!

From the Ladybug Class- (Jr. Kindergarten)
Winter weather is fun and we will explore how
“cold” weather in necessary for changes in
Winter to have a new Spring.
Our academic focus is on: letters Bb, Mm, Rr, and
Cc; math concepts of measurement, numbers 22-
29, counting/grouping; and review positional words.
More themes for the month involve building, tools
and vocabulary about construction and country life.
We want to wish all a very happy and healthy New
2-14 year.

In January we hit the ground running with our 100th
Day Celebration! More information to come, please
keep an eye out for it. Volunteers welcome, it’s a lot
of fun!
Our themes this month are Winter, the Weather,
and the Seasons. Focus letters are Ff, Ll, Kk and
Qq. We are also studying short i sound and high
frequency word I. The math lesson is telling time
and counting to 100. Bible story will be Joseph’s
Coat.

Happy New Year!
First off we would like to give a big thank you to all
of the families who volunteered and brought in food
for our Christmas parties. We could not have done
it without your support, thank you so much!
We are diving straight into the New Year with lots of
work. Throughout the month the themes are “I Can
Build,” “Build With Me,” “Everybody Builds,” and
“Country Life.” We will be focusing on the numbers
22 through 29, along with the letters “Bb,” “Mm,”
“Rr,” and “Cc.”
We are excited to bring in the New Year together in
the Dragonfly class.

Happy New Year to all our Butterfly
families. We want to thank everyone for
celebrating a wonderful Christmas season. The kids
truly enjoyed their Christmas parties and gift
exchanges. But most of all we enjoyed talking about
the birth of Christ and sharing with each other the
real meaning of Christmas.
This January our letter focus will be letters “Bb, Mm,
Rr and Cc.” Our numbers will be 22-29. Also, our
theme for this month is called “Construction Zone.”
Our bible lesson is “Joseph and the Coat of Many
Colors.” Thank you parents for working at home
with your children, together we are preparing them
for Kindergarten!

From the Afterschool Program for January 2014:
Hi everyone! Here is a letter that went home to the parents of the After School Program to update them on the process we are going through with our building program. I thought it would be good to share it with you.
Everyone is delighted to see our construction is moving along. As you may already know, it has taken us much longer than expected. It has been a learning experience for all of us as; we have experienced many delays in the process of our building. We are learning that the time it takes to get things done when dealing with
architects, city inspections and permits is longer than anyone could have ever thought.
I can assure you that we will be able to be up and running when January comes under the new Heritage program. Our bathrooms are just about complete and soon the office will be completed both on the outside and in. We plan on using the chapel, and conference rooms again as well as the new outside covered area while our building moves along in our building process.
Please keep Grace of Calvary in your prayers as we move further in our building project. All of the extra permits and changes that the city has required have put our project at a much greater cost than expected. We thank the parents who have stepped forward to offer to help us as we continue to make Grace of Calvary After School better for the children in our program. If you have any questions or concerns about our building, or feel you may be able to help in some way, please speak to me at any time.

Just A Note from Dawn L. Hayes-Stewart, Dir. of Music Ministries
December was a wonderful month here at GOC! The halls were filled with music,
beginning with our Second Annual Choral Festival and ending on December 29.
Blessings abounded from our Lord as we gave glory to Him! Many, many thanks to all
those very special people who participated.
Voices of Grace rehearsals will begin again on Thursday, January 16 @ 7 p.m. This is a great
opportunity for anyone who enjoys music and fellowshipping with those who do. Come be a part of us!
Need a ride? We’re happy to pick up anyone who wants to sing with us - call the church office and let us
know!
Mark Your Calendars! The delightful Bel Canto Choir from APU will join us for worship on Sunday,

The New Year is a time of making resolutions. Some resolutions are made and kept, while others are made and broken. But most all resolutions are made in good faith to become a reality. Let us, each of us, make some Faith resolutions in faith, for faith, to God, ourselves and our church! Will YOU make some Faith resolutions for 2014? Here are some suggestions: Faithfully invite family & friends to join you in worship at church. Faithfully volunteer for a committee, program and put your faith into action. Faithfully support our church's efforts in ministry by:

Expressing what you don’t like in a constructive manner. Volunteering to lead or create.
What other ways can you think of that you and others at Grace of Calvary can Faithfully resolve to make our Mission and Ministry a greater reality in 2014 with love and dedication of serving our Lord?
LAY MINISTRY - Beginning With Prayer Lay ministry is a voice that beckons us to a commitment to serve our Lord. We are ambassadors for Christ. The word 'layman' means ' the People' and the church means ' the whole people of God'. Lay ministry is full time for all who take seriously the claim of Jesus Christ upon all of life. We are equally responsible for being and doing according to the gifts we have. Come and share your gifts as we share the love of our Savior as we minister each day. As we begin with prayer, let us joyfully respond as a church alive with the Gospel, where together we discover the height, the depth and the width of Christ's love. So jointly we walk, love and serve together as Christians in community. We live in community, among the communion of saints. That is our creed. And that, too, is our hope. For God loved the world, the community, so much, that he gave his only Son to die for us - for all of us.

One of my favorite films is a cheesy little movie called 10,000 Years B.C. Around the middle of the movie the wise hunter shares his wisdom with the younger hunter and tells him: 'A good man draws a circle around himself and cares for those within; his woman, his children. Other men draw larger circles and bring within their brothers and sisters. But some men have a greater destiny. They must draw around themselves a circle that includes many, many more.
Nelson Mandela drew several circles in his lifetime. God was with him in that prison. God was with him when he was transformed into a man who could ask the following questions:
"Who does it help? Who does it hurt? Who does it include? Who does it exclude? What does love demand?" (Rev. Robert Davis) This is the man who taught his countrymen, white and black how to forgive and love unconditionally. How to be an example to the world at large.
Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"
How many circles have we drawn in our lives? Have we allowed God to use us to the fullest? In the organizations we participate in, how big are their circles? What has love demanded of us? Have a Blessed New Year!

A little about us...
Adult Bible Study at 9:00 a.m. Sunday Worship & Children’s Church at 10:00 a.m.
We cordially invite you to worship God with us and celebrate the New Life God gives us in the raising of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Children are an integral part of our worship service. We now have Children’s Church during Sunday worship. Worship activities and Bible story books are available for children aged 3 thru 4th grade to use during all services. A Parents’ Room, with sound, is available adjoining the sanctuary.
Grace of Calvary Lutheran Church & Preschool, a family oriented church founded in 1956, is a parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America supporting programs such as Lutheran Social Services of California, the Alhambra Retirement Community, the Lutheran Food Bank in West Covina, The Shepherd’s Pantry, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Immigration Services, and Habitat for Humanity International.
The Preschool is an exciting, educational ministry open to all children in the community. Daily classes are taught by a faculty dedicated to both the educational and spiritual growth of the children. The classes include a computer lab for the children. Weekly chapel is led by the Pastor or Music Director. The Preschool addresses the social aspect of the children’s growth from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Active members of the congregation may receive up to a 25% discount off tuition.
Our Youth Ministry offers activities including Summer Camp at El Camino Pines, Christmas Caroling to the sick and homebound, other Christian service projects and just getting together for the fun of it!
The women’s group, Miriam Circle, meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month. They celebrate by enjoying lunch and pursuing educational and spiritual growth. Miriam Circle provides meals for shut-ins, funds for various ministries, as well as family visits to those in need.
