    Overview CommScope or Moreng Network Bay Frames

    The Z-IDC connecting blocks provide a frame mounted point-of-termination for Certified/CompetingLocal Exchange Carriers (CLECs) central office equipment to interconnect to the Incumbent Local

    Exchange Carriers (ILECs) subscriber outside plant cable network. Typically, these subscriber cablepairs are located on the vertical side of a Main Distributing Frame (MDF). The 100-pair tie cablesconnect the front of the connecting block to the horizontal side of the subscriber MDF. These circuits arecross connected on the MDF to subscriber cable pairs as required using single-pair, cross-connect wire.The 25-pair connectorized CLEC equipment cable (with male RJ-21 connectors) connect to female RJ-21connectors on the back of the connecting block. This cable is run to the CLEC equipment in the CLECequipment area (caged area). See Figure 1. These blocks are intended for high termination density inter-connect termination arrangements in CommScope AD-8C501-5 or AD-8C801-50 (Seismic) or MorengLT99519 (or similar) Network Bay Frames.

    Cable Types

    The following cables are recommended for the MDF tie cables and can also be used as part of theconnectorized CLEC equipment cables.

    Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) circuits may or may not require larger diameter shielded cables, which maylimit the number of DSL circuits per vertical.

    General Cabling, Cable Racking, and Auxil iary Framing Recommendations

    a) It is recommended that the CLEC cabling be installed on one level of the cable rack (or two levelsif required) at the front of the frame and then run to the rear in a simple waterfall cablingarrangement to the vertical cabling path being installed.

    b) It is recommended that the ILEC MDF tie cables be installed on one level of the cable rack (or

    two levels if required) at the rear of the frame and then run to the front in a simple waterfallcabling arrangement to the vertical cabling path being installed.

    c) The above recommended cabling arrangements will avoid having to spiral cable off the racks andinto the frame and also provide rack segregation between the ILEC and CLEC cables.

    d) Recommended cable rack levels are 7 feet 6 inches (2.286 m) and 9 feet (2.7432 m) above thefloor level and as wide as practical. Cable pileup in the rack should not exceed 12 inches (304.8mm). See Figure 5 (CommScope frame) or Figure 14 (Moreng frame).

    e) Because of potentially heavy cable loads, the cross-aisle auxiliary framing should be spacedapproximately every 52 inches (1320.8 mm), or every other frame, and centered directly abovethe 2

    rdvertical (9.25 or 14.63 inches [234.95 or 371.602 mm] in from the left side) of a

    frame. This will avoid interference with individual cabling at the top of the frame for paths on both

    the front and back of the frame. See Figure 7 (CommScope frame) or Figure 16 (Moreng frame).

    The cable racks should be horizontally offset from the vertical plane of cabling within the frame by aminimum of 10 times the diameter of the cable to allow for the minimum-bending radius of the cables.See Figure 5 (CommScope frame), Figure 14 (Moreng frame) or Figure 27 (SSLPDF) Frame.

    Connecting Block Description

    The ZIDC-A400-D01-AFE Connecting Block (Material ID 108 406 679) is a 400-pair fixed bracket typeblock, which contains 40 ZIDC-A10-D01-A 10-pair disconnect-type connector modules (Material ID 107665 473) with internal normally closed dual contact sets. The cabling side of the connector modules arefactory wired within the connecting block bracket to Cinch female socket RJ-21 type, 25-pair connectors,which are mounted on the back surface of the connecting block bracket. These connectors (Part No. 97-22500-11) are equipped with InstaLatch

    *latches that engage and retain mating male RJ-21 connectors

    of interconnecting equipment cabling. This equipment cabling must beequipped with Cinch or equivalentmale plug RJ-21 type connectors arranged to accept these retaining latches, (male connectors havingsmall windows at each end). The recommended Cinch part numbers for male RJ-21 connectors are PartNo. 97-22500-11 or 97-22500-11A. Two and one-half 10-pair Z-IDC connector modules connect to one25-pair RJ-21 connector (each sequential set of ten adjacent Z-IDC connector modules are wired to setsof four adjacent RJ-21 connectors). These sets of four connectors are arranged diagonally with a total of16 RJ-21 connectors per block. See Figure 2.

    Installing CommScope Network Bay Frame and Mounting Adapter Ki t

    1. Install the frame per local practices using the ED-8C812-50, Group 21 (standard) or Group 22(seismic) floor mounting kit (one kit required per frame) and the junctioning plates (three required perframe and included with frame). The frame is arranged with (39) 2-inch (50.8 mm) high mountingplate positions, using constant 1-inch (25.4 mm) hole spacing. The mounting plate positions arenumbered 1 through 39 from bottom-to-top (numbering is not printed on frame).

    2. Install the ZIDC-84L23-MK01 Mounting Adapter Kit (Material ID 108 406 679) to the frame perinstruction sheet 201-205-001-21 (Material ID 848 508 636), which is included with the kit.

    Installing Connecting Blocks on CommScope Network Bay Frames

    Before installing the connecting blocks.

    If the optional ZIDC-FB10-A01 Label Kits are used (four kits to a block), it is recommended that anymanually applied lettering be applied to the labels beforethey are installed into the plastic label holder. Itis also recommended that the label holder be attached to the block beforeattaching the block to theframe. Lay the block on a flat surface (such as a tabletop), and remove the protective cover from theadhesive mounting strips on the label holders. Position the label holders along the right side of the blockwith the back edge of the label holder aligned with the back edge of the block. Press firmly on the outside

    of the label holder in the area of the adhesive strip to insure that the holder is properly attached to theconnecting block bracket. Refer to instructions included with the label kit. See Figure 3.

    NOTE:Although frame lineups can grow left-to-right or right-to-left, the connecting blocks should beinstalled into each individual frame from left-to-right, with both blocks of the same verticalinstalled at the same time, and before cabling is secured to the frame. This will provide goodaccess to the connecting block mounting screw positions (not covered by previously installedILEC cable on the front of the vertical of previously installed blocks) and simplify thesequential installation of cable.

    1. Four 10-32 x 1/2-inch thread-cutting slotted pan-head screws are included with each connectingblock to mount it to the adapter brackets on the frame. The four screws can be installed into theadapter brackets with a few thread engagements first, and then the connecting block can be slid in

    from right-to-left under the screw heads. While the screws will support the weight of the connectingblocks while they are being tightened, the installer should maintain a hold on the block in themounting position.

    2. Mount the upper connecting block of each vertical to the uppermost (position 39) and center (position20) adapter brackets aligning the bottom of the block with the center of the center adapter bracket(position 20). In this upper connecting block position, the upper mounting screws will use the highestmounting slots on the upper mounting tabs and the lower mounting screws will use the lowestmounting slots on the lower mounting tabs of the block. See Figures 3 and 4.

    3. Mount the lower connecting block of each vertical to the center and lower adapter brackets (positions20 and 1) aligning the top of the block with the center of the center adapter bracket (position 20). Inthis lower connecting block position, the upper mounting screws will use the top mounting slots onthe upper mounting tabs and the lower mounting screws will use the bottom mounting slots on the

    lower mounting tabs of the block. See Figures 3 and 4.

    Cabling to the Network Bay Frame

    1. The CLEC cable is terminated (plugged into) the female RJ-21 connectors on the rear of the blockand should be run from the bay to the cage to eliminate any cable slack at the frame.

    2. CLEC cabling within the frame should be installed from top-to-bottom. Looking at the back of theblock, run cabling to the left of the blocks in the space between the blocks, four cables wide by eightcables deep. Secure this cable to the back surface of the cable support brackets (Material ID846800324) and the twelve section cable support bracket (Material ID 847147238) at the top of theframe. The twelve section cable bracket has 12 cabling compartments. When looking at the back ofthe frame, use the first, forth, seventh, and tenth compartments from left to right to support the cable.Note that this bracket provides the only cable support for cables terminating to the uppermost set offour connectors of the four upper connecting blocks. Refer to Figures 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10.

    3. The raw-ended ILEC MDF tie cables are terminated to the front insulation displacement contacts(IDCs) of the Z-IDC connector modules on the front of the connecting block. Looking at the front ofthe block, run cabling to the left of the blocks, in the space between the blocks, and secured to thefront surface of the CommScope mounting adapter brackets. They should also be banded togetherwith a cable tie just above every 100-pair breakout (see Figures 5, 7, 9, and 10). This cable istypically routed to the equipment or horizontal side of the ILECs subscriber MDF.

    Installing Moreng Framework LT99519

    Note: The Moreng LT99519 framework is arranged specifically to mount up to eight ZIDC-A400-D01-AFE Connecting Blocks. This provides up to 3200 pairs in an interconnect arrangement.

    1. Install the frame per local practices using the Moreng floor mounting kit No. R8M084-FGH or the ED-8C812-50, Group 21 kits (one kit required per frame) and the Moreng frame junctioning plate No. R8-

    306 (three required per frame and included with frame). The Moreng frame is arranged with (44) 1-3/4 inch (44.45 mm) mounting plate positions, using a staggered 1-1/4 inch (31.75 mm) and 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) hole spacing (EIA type hole pattern). The mounting plate positions are numbered 1through 44 from bottom-to-top (numbering is not printed on frame). Refer to Figure 11.

    2. Install the four connecting block mounting adapter brackets (Moreng part No. LT-990401) in mountingplate positions 1, 22, 23, and 44 using four 12-24 x 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) long slotted hex-washer headmachine screws (Material ID 840 026 827) furnished with each of the brackets. Install position 22before 23.

    Note:That the hole pattern for mounting the connecting blocks is shifted to the left and therefore thebrackets are not reversible.

    3. The screws may be installed into the frame with a few thread engagements first, and then the adapter

    bracket can be slid under the screwheads. This will support the adapter brackets until the screws aretightened.

    4. Install the cable support brackets (Moreng part No. R2-23-120). Eight are required per bay. Thecable support brackets are to be mounted just above each of the four sets of RJ-21 connectors. Thisallows cable to be secured to the brackets immediately above their terminating connector positionsand at each additional bracket on their path to the top of the bay. These brackets are made from wirerod with an eyelet loop at each end and come with two 12-24 x 5/16-inch slotted pan-head machinescrews for mounting. See Figure 11.

    Note: Flipping the eyelet from top-to-bottom or vice-versa allows a small adjustment in height fromthe floor to optimize the location of the bracket in relation to the connector sets.

    The following chart indicates the recommended hole and eyelet positions for each bracket location from

    bottom-to-top.

    The Z-IDC connecting blocks mount vertically (modules horizontal with the module wire retainer clip tothe left) into a Moreng Telecom Products, LLC. relay rack (LT99519). A Moreng mounting adapter kitLT99421 (included with Moreng frame) is used to mount the blocks to the frame and to provide cablingsupport. Included in the kit are four connecting block mounting adapter brackets (LT990401), eightMoreng cable support brackets (R2-23-120), and associated mounting hardware. The mounting adapterkit may also be ordered separately from Moreng. The block adapter brackets are mounted

    horizontally to the frame using a total of 16 slotted hex-washer head thread forming screws. Thesescrews provide a ground connection between the mounting adapter brackets and framework. The cablesupport brackets are mounted to the frame with a total of 16 slotted pan-head machine screws.

    Installing Connecting Blocks on Moreng Framework

    Before installing the connecting blocks.

    If the optional ZIDC-FB10-A01 label kits are used (four kits to a block), it is recommended that anymanually applied lettering be applied to the labels before they are installed into the plastic label holder. Itis also recommended that the label holder be attached to the block before attaching the block to theframe. Lay the block on a flat surface (such as a tabletop), and remove the protective cover from theadhesive mounting strips on the label holders. Position the label holders along the right side of the blockwith the back edge of the label holder aligned with the back edge of the block. Press firmly on the outsideof the label holder in the area of the adhesive strip to insure that the holder is properly attached to theconnecting block bracket. Refer to instructions included with the label kit.

    Note: Although frame lineups can grow left-to-right or right-to-left, the connecting blocks should beinstalled into each individual frame from left-to-right, with both blocks of the same vertical installed atthe same time, and before cabling is secured to the frame. This will provide good access to theconnecting block mounting screw positions (not covered by previously installed ILEC cable on the

    front of the vertical of previously installed blocks) and simplify the sequential installation of cable.

    1. Four 10-32 x 1/2-inch thread-cutting slotted pan-head screws are included with each connectingblock to mount it to the adapter brackets on the frame. The four screws can be installed into theadapter bracket with a few thread engagements first, and then the connecting block can be slid infrom right-to-left under the screwheads. While the screws will support the weight of the connectingblocks while they are being tightened, the installer should maintain a hold on the block in themounting position.

    2. Mount the upperconnecting block of each vertical to the two uppermost adapter brackets (positions44 and 23) aligning the bottom of the block with the bottom edge of the lower adapter bracket(position 23). In this upper connecting block position, the upper mounting screws will use the lowestmounting slots on the upper mounting tabs and the lower mounting screws will use the middlemounting slots on the lower mounting tabs of the block. See Figure 12 and 13.

    3. Mount the lower connecting block of each vertical to the two lowest adapter brackets (positions 22and 1) aligning the top of the block with the top edge of the upper adapter bracket (position 22). Inthis lower connecting block position, the upper mounting screws will use the middle mounting slots onthe upper mounting tabs and the lower mounting screws will use the uppermost mounting slots on thelower mounting tabs of the block. See Figure 12 and 13.

    Cabling for Moreng Frames

    1. The CLEC cable is terminated (plugged) into the female RJ-21 connectors on the rear of the blockand should be run from the bay to the cage to eliminate any cable slack at the frame.

    2. CLEC cabling within the frame should be installed from top-to-bottom. Looking at the back of theblock, run cabling to the left of the blocks in the space between the blocks, four cables wide by eight

    cables deep. Secure this cable to the back surface of the Moreng cable support brackets (seeFigures 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19).

    3. The raw-ended ILEC MDF tie cables are terminated to the front insulation displacement contacts(IDCs) of the Z-IDC connector modules on the front of the connecting block. ILEC cabling within theframe should be installed from bottom-to-top. Looking at the front of the block, run cabling to the leftof the blocks, in the space between the blocks, and secured to the front surface of the Morengmounting adapter brackets. They should also be banded together with a cable tie just above every100-pair breakout. This cable is typically routed to the equipment or horizontal side of the ILECssubscriber MDF.

    Z-IDC Connecting Block in a Co-Mounted Application

    The ZIDC-A400-D01-AFE Connecting Block can also be used co-mounted with related equipment, suchas the Stinger multiplexer, within the same CommScope network bay frame. The DSLAM-ZIDC-A400-DO1-2 (Material ID 700018872) Connecting Block Mounting Kit provides mounting adapter brackets andcable support hardware. This kit is typically used in conjunction with the DSLAM-DDF-DM6-SC8 (MaterialID 700018633) used for interconnecting fiber or coax cables to the high frequency side of the Stingermultiplexer. Refer to Figures 20 and 21.

    For the Stinger application, two of the 400-pair connecting blocks are utilized to Interconnect up to eight100-pair tie cables coming from the ILEC MDF and up to the 672 Stinger equipment pairs. It isrecommended that the upper half of the frame be used to mount the ZIDC blocks because the ILEC tiecables will typically be coming to the frame from an overhead cable rack.

    Overview

    The Z-IDC connecting blocks provide a frame mounted point-of-termination for Certified/CompetingLocal Exchange Carriers (CLECs) central office equipment to interconnect to the Incumbent LocalExchange Carriers (ILECs) subscriber outside plant cable network. Typically, these subscriber cablepairs are located on the vertical side of a Main Distributing Frame (MDF). The 100-pair tie cablesconnect the front of the connecting block to the horizontal side of the subscriber MDF. These circuits arecross-connected on the MDF to subscriber cable pairs as required using single-pair, cross-connect wire.The 25-pair connectorized CLEC equipment cable with male RJ-21 connectors connect to female RJ-21connectors on the back of the connecting block. This cable is run to the CLEC equipment in the CLECequipment area (caged area). See Figure 22. These blocks are intended for high termination densityinter-connect arrangements on the CommScope Single-Sided Low Profile Distributing Frame (SSLPDP).Refer to Figure 22.

    Cabling the Connecting Blocks mounted to the SSLPDF Framework

    1. Typically, the CLEC cable is terminated (plugged into) the female RJ-21 connectors on the rearof the block and should be run from the Frame to the Cage to eliminate any cable slack withinthe frame.

    2. Cabling to the rear of the block within the frame should be run and terminated starting from topand sequentially to the bottom. These cables should be run down on the right side of the verticaland secured to the horizontal straps behind the vertical mounting bar. Refer to Figures 25 or 26,and 27 and 28. If access to the back of the frame is not available, plugging the cables in to theirmating connectors will have to be done blind. The connectors at the end of the cables can onlyplug into the mating connectors on the block one way. Align the mating connectors and push theconnector on the end of the cable onto the mating connector on the back of the block. Theconnector on the block has latches, which will engage on the mating connector on the cable andlock the mating connector halves together. The mated connectors can be unlocked bydepressing one of the two latches at either end (within the small square window on the maleconnector) using a small Phillips screw driver (or similar tool) and rotating the connector halvesapart.

    3. Typically, the ILEC 100-Pair MDF tie cable is raw ended and terminates on the front of the blockto the ZIDC Connector Modules using the ZIDC Wire Insertion Tool. Run the cables in sequencefrom top to bottom on the left side of the connecting blocks.

    4. Bring the first cable to the top left side of the upper connecting block and butt the first cable just

    above the uppermost ZIDC module. Fan the leads in 10-Pair groups to each of the first ten 10 -Pair ZIDC modules according to the color code sequence of the cable.

    5. Repeat this process for each subsequent cable. At each point where a cable is butted, securethe entire cable bundle to the wire clip of the adjacent connector module. Refer to Figure 28.
