Mark White, a man who has been with thechannel from the very beginning, is Interim-CEO of Five. White joined Five in 1996, longbefore the channel went on-air in March 1997.He was a key member of the launch teamwhich ensured that Five was fully sold from DayOne. So Mark White knows the channel like theback of his hand and has witnessed all its upsand downs.

Since February, Five’s audience is up 1.8 percent year on year – the only terrestrial channelto increase its audience during this time.Including its digital channels, Five is up 3.3 percent year on year. Mark White’s task will be tomaintain this development for Five until DawnAirey, the broadcaster’s new CEO andChairman, arrives. In Backstage, Mark Whitegives a brief recap of the channel’s history andan outlook on its future.

You joined Five back in 1996, and were partof the team from the very beginning. Inretrospect, how would you describe thedevelopment of the channel?I actually joined in April 1996, a full year beforewe went on air. In fact I was the 18th Channel 5employee. In many ways today’s Five bears lit-tle resemblance to the station that launchedwith the Spice Girls (remember them?) perfor-ming Give Me 5 on Easter Sunday 1997. Andyet I’d like to think that the spirit which under-pinned the channel then is still very much alivetoday. This remains a great place to work, wit-ness the numbers who have returned to Fivefollowing spells with other broadcasters, orthose who simply speak positively about thechannel from the outside. It goes withoutsaying that I’m enormously proud of whatwe’ve created at Five. Nobody will ever againlaunch a UK channel which, from a standingstart, takes 5 per cent of all national viewing -within two years.

Now, in 2008, what are the challenges thechannel faces? When we launched, the multi-channel proposi-tion was just beginning to gain strength. There

were around 6 million enabled homes receivinga maximum of 60 channels. Today the figureshave increased to almost 22 million homes, with up to 400 stations to watch. Holding shareis a massive achievement for a terrestrialbroadcaster, hence the growth of the ‘channelfamilies’. We need to keep our core channelfront-of-mind, while generating growth throughtargeted digital extensions.

Will there be any strategic changes withinthe next few weeks?I think a period of comparative stability mightbe a good idea! Naturally I’ll be talking at lengthto my fellow directors but to answer the ques-tion, I don’t foresee any major structural chan-ges in the immediate future and it’ll be verymuch ‘business as usual’ at Long Acre. Havingsaid that, there are a number of key strategicinitiatives already in place and I will ensure thatthese are implemented.

How would you describe your personalmanagement style?Collaborative and consultative, I hope. I listenand I talk. My core sales management teamhas been together for well over a decade. Iencourage continuity, totally embrace the‘team’ concept and believe in playing to indivi-dual strengths. People are the heart and soul ofany business. If you trust and believe in them, they’ll trust and believe in you. Happy, positivepeople are the most creative and productive. Isee it as my job to create a working environ-ment in which everyone is able and equippedto perform to their optimum level.

RTL Group with solid EBITA growth inthe first quarter of 2008RTL Group had a good start to the year as reported EBITA was up 8.7 per cent toEUR 188 million in the first quarter.Luxembourg - 7 May 2008

The increase of the reported EBITA is mainlydriven by the performance of MediengruppeRTL Deutschland. Reported Group revenuewas down 2.0 per cent compared to the firstquarter last year to EUR 1,336 million mainlydue to lower revenues in the UK and Franceand also due to the strong Euro. The reportedEBITA margin improved to 14.1 per cent main-ly due to continued cost discipline. The netcash position amounted to EUR 1,240 millionwith an operating cash conversion of 101 percent.

The net TV advertising markets in Germany,Belgium and the Netherlands all grew in thefirst quarter of 2008 whilst the French and theUK TV advertising markets were down.

The outlook for the full year 2008 remainsunchanged: with regard to advertising sales,RTL Group has – despite the current economicclimate – no reason to be pessimistic.

The main developments in the operational busi-nesses of RTL Group in the first quarter of 2008were:

• Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland maintains itsclear leadership among young viewers. RTLTelevision’s show highlights Ich bin ein Star -Holt mich hier raus! (I’m A Celebrity… Get MeOut Of Here!) and Deutschland sucht denSuperstar (Idols) had a strong performance.

• M6 in France successfully launched a newaccess primetime lineup with the factual enter-tainment show Un dîner presque parfait (ComeDine With Me) and the newsshow 100% magscoring high ratings. Meanwhile the digitalchannel W9 continues to grow its audiencefigures.

• FremantleMedia had No. 1 shows on all majorUK channels. American Idol (Fox) was again themost watched primetime show in the US andreaches 7.5 million viewers more than its clo-sest competitor.

• Five in the UK reports growing audienceshare since mid February 2008 with a signifi-cant contribution from popular Australiandrama Neighbours.

• The French radio family goes from strength tostrength: the flagship station RTL Radio wasagain the clear market leader in all ratings crite-ria in the first 2008 Médiamétrie survey(January to March)

• RTL Group increased its stake in GrupoAntena 3 to just over 20 per cent.

• On the Internet RTL Group has comprehensi-ve and rapidly growing catch-up TV services inGermany (RTLnow.de), France (M6replay.fr)and the Netherlands (RTLgemist.nl). Five in theUK is going to launch a revamped video ondemand service in the course of 2008.

“A case study for geographical expansion”On 3 May the Croatian newspaper Vecernji List published an interview with our CEOGerhard Zeiler about RTL Group’s strategy, its position in Eastern Europe – and aboutthe success of RTL Televizija in Croatia.Croatia - 6 May 2008

The focus of the interview was on RTL Group’sactivities in Eastern Europe and especially inCroatia. “RTL Group is very happy with itsinvestments in Eastern Europe”, Gerhard Zeilersaid and mentioned the activities in Hungary, where RTL Klub has been market leader foryears, Russia, where RTL Group has a footholdvia a 30 per cent minority stake in Ren TV anda participation in a joint venture for non-terres-trial channels, and of course Croatia. With RTLTelevizija being the most-watched channel inthe key age-group of 14- to 49-year-olds, Zeilerleft no doubt that the channel is in a much bet-ter shape compared to its main commercialcompetitor.

Being asked on Croatia’s role in the circle ofcountries of RTL Group Gerhard Zeiler pointedout that “RTL Televizija has become a casestudy for geographical expansion which is oneof our stated strategic goals. In the past fouryears, we have shown RTL Group can expandinto new markets by leveraging our strong RTLbrand and our TV expertise gained in many

European markets.” The newspaper said thatthere have been rumors in Croatia that RTLGroup might withdraw from the country. Zeilerexplained that these rumors have no basis:“There are very few countries, where a newco-mer-channel became market leader in such ashort period of time. RTL Televizija is not onlythe market leader among young viewers, it isalso relevant and its operations are already pro-fitable. These successes are clearly linked withRTL Televizija’s CEO Christoph Mainusch.”

Gerhard Zeiler also explained the importance ofattractive content and strong brands, especial-ly in the hyper fragmented digital world. “In thedigital world, there will be more television thanever in future. Television will have more distri-bution platforms than ever and it really will betelevision for everyone – for mass audiences aswell as for smaller target groups. As a contentand brand company, RTL Group is in excellentposition to continue strengthening its positionas the leading European entertainment net-work.”
