Superior ame resistance and arc ash protection FLASH FIRE TESTING

N.C.S.U. PYROMANNEW FROM PIONEERFR-Tech™ premium materials have been developed and tested by Pioneer to provide superior ame resistance, ash re and arc ash protection, and are designed especially for the needs of Canadian workers.

Understanding FR Standards CGSB 155.20-2000

CGSB 155.20-2000 – Workwear for Protection Against Hydrocarbon Flash Fire. States the minimum requirements for performance of workwear worn for protection against unplanned exposure to hydrocarbon ash re. Testing includes ame resistance (fabrics tested before and after wash/dry cycles), Thermal Protective Performance (TPP), heat resistance, and thermal shrinkage resistance. All components of the garments must meet required CGSB155.20-2000 standards, not only the outer shell material.

NFPA 2112 – 2012 Standard on Flame Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire. Speci es the minimum design, performance, certi cation and testing requirements for ame-resistant fabric and garments for use in areas at risk from ash res. Testing includes ame resistance (100 washes), heat transfer performance, heat resistance, thermal shrinkage, ash re resistance (tested on manikin according to protocols speci ed in ASTM 1930), tensile strength, tearing strength, laundering shrinkage and colourfastness.

What are ARC and ATPV?An electric arc or arc discharge is an electrical breakdown of a gas that produces an ongoing plasma discharge, resulting from a current through normally nonconductive media such as air. An arc ash is the light and heat produced from an electric arc supplied with su cient electrical energy to cause substantial damage, harm, re, or injury.ARC (Arc Rated Category) is a rating indicating the electric arc resistance of a garment. The material is tested to determine the ATPV (Arc Thermal Protective Value), which is the incident energy on a material or several layers of material resulting in a 50% chance of su cient heat passing through said material(s) to cause a second-degree burn. The chart above shows the ATPV level required for each ARC class level.

Arc 2 Min. 8 cal/cm2

Arc 3 Min. 25 cal/cm2

Arc 4 Min. 40 cal/cm2

What is a ash re? CGSB 155.20-2000 de nes ash re as “A rapidly moving ame front which can be a combustion explosion. Flash re may occur in an environment where fuel and air become mixed in adequate concentrations to combust and where all sources of ignition have not been controlled. Hydrocarbon ash re has a heat ux of approximately 84 kW/m2 for relatively short periods of time, typically three seconds or less.”NFPA 2112 – 2012 de nes ash re as “A re that spreads by means of a ame front rapidly through a di used fuel, such as dust, gas, or the vapors of an ignitable liquid, without the production of damaging pressure.” Such conditions are a major threat in the petrochemical, chemical and oil and gas industries. Workers performing tasks wearing non-FR clothing in these industries or related service industries can add to worker injuries by providing further fuel that could ignite in the ash re and cause extensive wearer injuries. FR-TechTM fabrics provide superior protection from ash re.Pioneer FR-TechTM 88/12 has been independently lab tested by UL and certi ed to both Canada and USA.

Pioneer FR-Tech™ is lab tested in North America through UL to the NFPA 2112 standard, which sets clear guidelines for ash re safety testing on instrumented manikins. The NFPA 2112 standard calls for a 3-second ash re test as per ASTM F1930 on coveralls and requires a body burn of 50% or less in order to pass. Pioneer FR-Tech™ passes the 3-second test with a 15.3% body burn rate, an exceptional result. This gure includes a 7% burn rate on the head area which is not covered by our coverall. The burn rate is measured by sensors all over the body as well as the head. Hands and feet do not carry any sensors.
