Tenneco Inc. entered into its sev-enth joint venture in China, partner-ing with Changchun FAW SihuanGroup Ltd., a subsidiary of FAWGroup Corp., to supply emissioncontrol components and systems forpassenger and commercial vehicles.
The joint venture will be based inChangchun, China. Tenneco willhave management control of the ven-ture, which includes three partners.Tenneco will have a 41 percent equityshare; Changchun FAW Sihuan willown 49 percent; and Tenneco Tongtai(Dalian) Exhaust System Co. Ltd. willhave 10 percent.
Changchun FAW Sihuan sold 1.8million vehicles in 2009 and is one of
the oldest vehicle manufacturers inChina.
“In our view, the announcement isa positive considering FAW’s size andscale,” Wells Fargo analyst Rick Kwaswrote today in an e-mail report.
Tenneco, maker of shock absorbers,emission control and ride control sys-tems, reported net income of $17 mil-lion for the fourth quarter of 2009, or32 cents per share, compared with a$298 million loss, or $6.40 per share, ayear earlier. Sales rose 9 percent froma year earlier, to $1.32 billion.
Tenneco, which is based in subur-ban Chicago, ranks No. 35 on the Au-tomotive News list of the top 100global suppliers with worldwide salesto automakers of $4.80 billion in2008. c

DETROIT — Lear Corp. said it will increase productionand add 285 jobs this year at its northwest Indiana seatmanufacturing plant.
The company will spend more than $2.2 million at theplant, which will make seats for the new Ford ExplorerSUV. Lear will hire production workers and will fill sometechnical and administrative positions.
“This is good for middle America, especially since somany jobs were lost,” Lear spokesman Mel Stephens saidthis month.
Production of the new Explorer will begin in the fourthquarter at Ford Motor Co.’s Chicago plant. The Lear facto-ry in Hammond, Ind., has supplied parts to the Chicagoplant since the mid-1990s.
There are about 140 workers at the Lear plant. Formeremployees — at least 100 laid-off workers — will have anopportunity to get a job at the plant. After that, Stephens
said, Lear will take applications. Lear ranks No. 4 on the Automotive News list of the top
150 North American suppliers with original-equipmentauto parts sales of $4.89 billion in 2008. The company em-ploys 75,000 people at 197 facilities in 35 countries.c
