Principal Team Report

Deb Gentle Rose AllenMichael Wilson Rebecca Williams

Thank you to parents who took the time to attend meetings with teachers at the end of last term, I hope you found this informative and of assistance to you in supporting your child with their learning.

Our Year 12 students are in their final week of classes. VCE teachers and students are working together to ensure they make the most of the remaining time before exams. Most Year 12 VCAL students have now completed their competencies.

For year 7 to year 11 students term 4 is the time when the year’s learning is consolidated and students can focus on demonstrating the skills and knowledge they have been developing during the year.

Congratulations to the Year 8 Hands On Learning class for the excellent community work they have done recently. Last weekend they worked as volunteers at the Garden Expo and this week the class organised a casual clothes and a lunchtime sausage sizzle. The boys raised nearly $1,200.00 for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Our Year 10 students dressed up in their finest for the Presentation Balls last weekend. We enjoyed two wonderful community evenings and congratulate the Debutants on working together to create a memorable event for their families and friends.

Another important event is our Celebration Day for the class of 2016 on Friday 21/10. The college has committed to changing the culture of this day to ensure it is enjoyable for all members of the college community. The year 12 students have worked with the Year 12 Learning Culture Team to plan a morning which will be fun and respectful of the college, their fellow students and their teachers. In planning this day the students have committed to ensuring that there will be no littering, damage or disruption. The focus will be on fun but not at the expense of respect and community.

The year 12 students will arrive dressed-up at the usual time and have breakfast together, to be followed by the planting of a tree to symbolize their growth over the last 6 years and into the future. At recess students will share a morning tea with the staff and then they will lead a whole school assembly, where we will farewell the class of 2016 and wish them well for the future.

Thank you to parents for supporting your children and the college in meeting the expectations of this day.

Finally, please remember that on Monday October 31st the college will run an alternate program for students. We are aware that many families choose to take a long weekend at this time, so running normal classes is not productive. Teachers will be on duty and providing alternate learning activities for students who attend.

Deb Gentle Principal (on behalf of the Principal Team)

DOVE students present to Drouin RotaryRecently two students attending the Drouin Overseas Volunteer Experience (DOVE) Cambodia program and Mrs Walker (the program coordinator), attended a dinner meeting with the Drouin Rotary to present their Volunteering program to the group. Lucy Tomkins and Madison Burrows spoke about their intentions, ambitions and excitement related to the volunteering program in Cambodia. They reflected on what they had already gained, even before they had left Australia. Both girls appreciated the opportunity to speak in front of the group of 40 adults, but admitted they would never have seen themselves doing this a year ago.

The Drouin Rotary were so impressed by their presentation and the efforts of the DOVE group that they pledged $1000 towards the library to connect electricity and purchase tools for building the furniture required. Many of the Rotarians spoke to the girls after the meeting about the program and the College. Overall a fantastic outcome for the College and the Community.

DOVE Cambodia Day brings out the best in the team!

The fundraising day for the DOVE Cambodia team saw an enormous Bake Sale and stall of Nepalese garments. All the students participating in the DOVE Cambodia program donated baked goods to sell and George Hendry from Nyora set up a stall selling goods from Nepal. It was a great opportunity to get items for Christmas gifts. The day was a huge success raising $1500 for the library the group is going to set up in KTK in Cambodia.

On the first Saturday of the school holidays the DOVE group also ran a BBQ at the Warragul Bunnings. The day was a beautiful spring day of sunshine and consequently many people came to Bunnings and purchased a sausage.

The students looked very professional in their new t-shirts from Phoenix Screen printing in Warragul. The day was a huge success, selling all our sausages and raising over $1000.

The Ellie Goulding concert fundraiser raised a further $585, thanks to Hisense Arena and Pakenham JB Hi FI. A fantastic effort as we get closer to the day of departure in late November.

The final Bake Sale and Nepalese day will be Thursday 27th October at lunchtime.

Well done team!

Gita Walker

8HOL at the Garden ExpoOver the weekend of October 8th and 9th at the Lions Club Garden Expo at Lardner Park, the Year 8 HOL program students were busy fulfilling their commitment to the Leos Club (Junior Lions), working side by side with the Drouin Lions Club. The Garden Expo was an enormous success attracting 5400 people through the gates for the weekend. The 15 Leos were active running the children’s free potting table, where children could come and pot their own plant to take home. The boys worked as mentors, helping the children plant their flower or tomato plant. Outside more boys were running a plant transporting service, carrying plants to customer’s cars for a gold coin donation. All proceeds from the service are going to the Royal Children’s Hospital. The weekend showed the boys take leadership, working as a team and continual respect and commitment. A fantastic effort over the two days raising $235. A special thank you to Janine Lovett, Jen Rolls, Andrew Marks, Bernie Walsh and various parents for their time helping with the weekend program.

The following Monday saw the 8HOL team running the Footy Colours Day and sausage sizzle. The day was a big ask straight after the weekend at the Garden Expo, but the team excelled, preparing, collecting, cooking, selling, counting and cleaning up. Overall the day raised $940. Combining the 3 days, the boys raised $1175 for the Royal Children’s Hospital – a very respectable commitment.

Well done boys and the 8HOL team!

Gita Walker

SAVE THE DATE

First year students for VET 2017 will be required to attend the Orientation day. More information will be sent home in the near future, including an acceptance letter which states that the student has been accepted into the VET course of their choice and that the course is running.

JUNIOR JAPANESE Speech ContestOn Sunday August 21st, Shae Hogben and Teagan Jones took part in the JLTAV Junior Japanese Speech Contest in Melbourne. They worked really hard over 4 weeks practicing during lunch-times and after school in order to prepare their speeches. Their hard work definitely paid off as they did an excellent job of reciting two speeches, with no mistakes. Speaking in a foreign language by yourself is hard, but doing it in front of an audience and judges is even harder. Well done girls for a fantastic effort!

WHAT IF I DO NOT GET A HIGH ENOUGH ATAR TO GET INTO MY DESIRED COURSE?

Many pathways and programs exist to assist you in getting to where you want to go. Suggestions:

• Complete a Diploma of Tertiary Studies at Monash University in either Education, Business or Nursing (ATAR 50+) OR a Diploma of Higher Education (ATAR 65+); Indigenous pathways - See: www.study.monash/how-to-apply/indigenous-student-applications

• Complete a course at Monash College in Art & Design, Arts (Human Behaviour or Psychology streams), Business or Commerce, Engineering or Science; search Courses on VTAC website

• Complete a course at Deakin College in Commerce, Computing, Engineering, Health Sciences, Management, Media and Communication or Science

• Complete a UniLink Diploma at Swinburne (Arts and Communications, Business, Design, Engineering, Health Science, IT, Science)

• Complete a Diploma at La Trobe Melbourne in Biosciences, Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, IT or Mass Media Communications

• Complete a Tertiary Preparation Course at RMIT in engineering or science

• Consider studying a related university course with a lower ATAR; if you do well you MAY be able to transfer to your desired course later on

• Start with a VET (TAFE) course in a related field; two years of VET often equals one at university

• Complete a Tertiary Studies Diploma at Melbourne Polytechnic (Preston)

• Complete a Certificate IV in Liberal Arts – a pathway into a range of degrees. Swinburne and Victoria Uni have this Certificate

• Consider a country/rural campus. ATAR’s are often lower, usually due to lower demand; most have accommodation (apply ASAP)

• For nursing consider first completing Division 2 at TAFE (or a private provider) - eg. Box Hill, Chisholm, Federation, Goulburn Ovens, Holmesglen, RMIT or Swinburne

• ACU has certificate/diploma courses that can lead to degrees (through ACUcom) See: http://www.acu.edu.au/courses/2014/other_courses/vocational_education_training_vet/

• Complete a Victoria University Foundations@VU alternative entry to higher education and diploma studies course - a 13 week course designed to build academic skills needed for tertiary study. See: www.vu.edu.au/courses/foundations-at-vu-jyac

• Complete a 2-year Associate Degree – Do you want to study at university but are not sure if you will meet the entry requirements for a bachelor’s degree? Several universities offer Associate Degrees (eg Deakin, RMIT).

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support @ DSCSWPBS is a framework that supports positive behaviours and expectations that stem from the College values of achievement, respect, commitment and community. One of the goals of staff at DSC this year has been to increase the visibility of our values. Over several months, staff submitted entries into a visibility competition to showcase how they were displaying the values (and expected behaviours) in their respective areas.

Below are some of the entries:

Year 9 French ExcursionOn Thursday 8th September 2016, our two Year 9 French classes were lucky to board the bus on a beautiful sunny day, for an exciting trip to the Snail Farm "Café Escargot" located an hour away from Drouin SC at 10 Old Nichols Rd, Mirboo North.

The owner grows snails on the property, preparing them and cooking them for the guests. Snails hibernate during winter, but all were moving around in the boxes of the warm greenhouse with the spring season. Students were excited or worried, for some of them, to taste/eat a snail for the first time ever before lunch at the restaurant.

Thank you to Ms Fanning and Mr Moreau for organising this memorable excursion, as part of our Term 3 Food Topic. A special MERCI to the AFTV who sponsored half of the excursion and meal costs.

WELL DONE HOBBO!David Hobbs, our college chaplain, or Hobbo as he is affectionately known, recently completed his 10th Variety Bash. Hobbo was officially welcomed back after completing the journey from Melbourne to Darwin in this year’s bash by the Drouin Secondary College Year 8 Hands on Learning team (HOL). Hobbo works closely with the HOL team, providing support, encouragement and guidance to the boys and his experience and dedication towards fundraising for those in need has been a great motivation for the team.

After 10 years of completing the bash, Hobbo and his teammates from car 141 are showing no signs of slowing down. They have raised over $155,000 for Variety and have their sights set on reaching $200,000 next year. Emulating the fundraising efforts of Hobbo and his team the HOL team as Leos (young Lions Club members) have conducted fundraising barbeques at Bunnings, Coles and Drouin Secondary College for charity. This year the HOL team decided to donate $1000 to assist Hobbo’s fundraising efforts. The HOL team are very proud of what Hobbo and his team have achieved and the feeling is mutual.
