OACE YOUTH VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Haley Jones gave so much of her time in 2019 to OACE and events. She doesn’t just show up for an hour, watch the time, and then leave. She stays “as long as it takes”. Haley gives extra effort & time. She has helped with the Odell Run for Fun, Odell Day, Trunk or Treat, Odell Craft Fairs, and Odell Christmases. Haley is actually a “2-time” winner of this award. It was presented to her in 2015, and she has just continued to help! We give Haley an extra thanks for her extra effort at the 2019 Craft Fair. Haley was there to set up Friday morn-ing, Vendor Check in Friday Night, Vendor Check In Saturday (early) morning, ALL day at the Show, and until the very end of cleanup, helping vendors load their vehicles for a couple hours. Thank you for all of your hard work Haley. Good luck in your future, we love you!

Amy also helps Jacque Probst in organizing and running all the Blood Drives that happen in Odell. Amy is very active at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Odell. IMPORTANT NOTE: Amy & Brad Vi-tosh received the Lifetime Volunteer Award in 2014. The fact that Amy is now receiving this award is proof that you never have to stop volunteering! Amy does everything with a smile and positive attitude and is always striving to help move our community of Odell forward.

LIFETIME VOLUNTEER AWARD Catherine Renshaw is a 4th generation resident of Odell. She strives to help maintain a good quality of life here for her family and neigh-bors, this has ALWAYS been Catherine’s primary concern. She is another person who is constantly looking for ways for Odell to keep moving to the future and not be content with staying in one place. Catherine first started serving Odell by starting the first 5k run and bike ride during the 1981 Centennial Celebration. She helped write and publish the original Odell History Book in 1981. She is currently working diligently to update that same history by compiling a new publication. Catherine more recently has been a huge hand in start-ing the Odell Public Library and volunteering weekly to keep it open. She is also the “mayor” of the American Cemetery. Catherine deliv-ers meals on wheels, checking on the homebound in the village. She is part of the newly started Odell Housing Group and a large force in the Corner Pub & Kitchen and it’s reopening.

Page 8 “When things change inside you, things change around you.”

My heart and mind have been in a state of indecision now for several weeks. Years ago, I had the privilege of serving as the school nurse for our school. I quick-ly grew to love the kids! Where else could I be called both a doctor and a vet!? (One time a student took one of my mints from the candy dish. I told him to save it for after school. Later the teacher caught him eating it. When asked where he got it, he said the vet gave it to him!) It was an eye-opening experience for me in the world of education and school health. I came to admire all of our teachers and the work they do. It broke my heart to have to step down as the nurse in pursuit of other employment obligations in 2015. Sometime after that, a thought started pop-ping up now and then in the back of my mind. Maybe I should consider seeking a seat on the school board; then I could still have an involvement with our school and the students. That thought never went away and it echoes in my mind now, louder than ever as we have a seat open-ing up this spring. A few weeks ago, I decided to put the thought away as I figured I am not the person for the job; however, the thought resurfaced this week-end as I learned about the recent events of school bullying. My heart aches for those involved. Last night my dear friend made a comment that I just couldn’t shake. She commented that the next individual on the board would need to use “their voice”; the exact reason I decided I’m not the best candidate…. I don’t

feel I have a loud voice. This morning before church I decided to pick up my copy of Gather magazine (sent compliments of our women’s group at church) to find the very first story “Using My Voice”. OK God, funny one. “Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trum-pet” (Isaiah 58:1) the first line in the first reading. And then the Gospel, “You are the light of the world…No one, after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it give light to all in the house” (Matthew 5:14-15). I came home and later messaged my friend. Guess what she told me? “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding in all they ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3: 5-6). They say He speaks and guides us, right? I don’t think I can offer any more in the conversation! It is time to listen and trust in the Lord. For those that don’t know me; I am a registered nurse and have 20 years of nursing experience. I re-ceived my Practical Nursing Diploma from Southeast Community College, a Baccalaureate of Nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a Master’s Degree in Nursing with an emphasis in Nursing Education from Grand Canyon University. I am the Vice President of the Epsilon Chapter of Del-ta Kappa Gamma and was recently nominated as the President of the St. John’s Ladies Aid in Lanham. I was also recently elected onto the St. John’s Council. In addition to these activities I also belong to Sigma Theta Tau and the Licensed Practical Nurses Associ-ation of Nebraska.

If given the privilege of serving our school, commu-nity, and children my priorities would be the health and well-being of our district’s children and school staff. I am sharing my message as a way for you to know a bit about me and to ask for your support in the upcoming election. It would be a privilege to serve as the community’s voice on our school board. (Written 2/9/2020)

Page 9 “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” -Arthur Ashe Odell Community

Foundation, Inc In the early 90’s, several people promoted the idea of forming a community foundation as a tool to channel dollars into community projects, with the advantage of hav-ing the contributions treated as tax deductible. On September 16, 1993, the arti-cles of incorporation were filed with the State of Nebraska for the “Odell Community Foundation, Inc” a locally formed and locally administered Nebraska Corpora-tion. On March 7, 1994, the Odell Com-munity Foundation received official determination from the Internal Revenue Service, recognizing it as an official 501(c)(3) tax exempt or-ganization. The foundation has NO administra-tive costs, as it is completely run by local unpaid volunteers. ALL of the money raised (with the exception of some fundraising costs of print-ing and postage) has been reinvest-ed right back here in Odell. In the first year of existence

(1994) $13,865.00 was raised to fund the first phase of a project to replace much of the sidewalk downtown, and install decorative streetlights. Families and individuals were able to sponsor a light on Main Street. It took several years, but eventually lights were put up in the entire downtown and park ar-ea. The most money raised in one year was in 2006, when $147,103.00 was donated. This was during the time when the Old West Trails Center building was being refur-bished. Over the last 27 years, over $756,500.00 has been raised. ALL of this money was returned to the community in various improve-ment projects. Some of the projects the founda-tion has partnered with are: Side-walk improvements and new decorative streetlights, air conditioning at the high school gymnasium, improvement and expansion of the village park including camper pads, play-ground equipment, and land-

scaping, cleanup of various round own houses into build-ing lots (some are

still available), as well as two which were remodeled and are currently occupied, clean up and raising (for flood plain purposes) of the old high school property in the south part of town, improvements to the community building, de-velopment of the “old bank” building into the “Old West Trails Center”, development and refurbishing of the old Rice Hospital building into the “Rice Lodge and Conference Center”, as well as several other improvement and beau-tification projects. None of this would be possible without the many unpaid volun-teers and organizations that made the actual various projects happen. We are proud to have been able to be a part of the process to channel funds to these projects!

All donations are appreciated, large and small. All donor dollars have been used in projects of the DO-NORS’ choice.

The Odell Public Library is current-ly partnering with The Odell Com-munity Foundation for all of the donations toward their new Resto-ration Project on Main Street.

The Villages of Diller and Odell have a unique opportunity to create resilience in our water systems that would ensure safe and continuous water delivery in the event of a natural disaster. James Persson will be presenting the idea to community leaders. Please see below for more infor-mation about the project and also Jim's impressive biography. Jim Persson was born and raised in Oakland, Ne (pop. 1,200) in northeast Nebraska. He went to undergrad at Creighton and got a degree in Atmos-pheric Science. Rather than becoming a meteorolo-gist, he went straight into medical school and graduat-ed in 1995. He went on active duty in the Army and became a family practice physician for a few years. However, he really enjoyed the atmospheric back-ground and flying, so he switched to Aerospace Medi-cine which has been his specialty since 2005 or so. He retired from active duty in 2017 and took a job as a Dept of the Army Civilian, working on medical waiv-ers for pilots. With his background in meteorolo-gy/climatology and public health, he served as the DoD representative to the Interagency Working Group on Climate Change and Human Health. In this role, he became interested in the disaster resilience of small community water systems. The emergency

response plans of small/very small community water systems are not tracked at the federal level like city systems and therefore seem to lack coordination. With that in mind, he feels there is a need to help rural communities ensure they have adequate options to maintain water service during stressed conditions. During his military career, he was stationed in the Florida panhandle during Hurricane Katrina, Alabama during the tornado outbreak of 2011, and Boston during Superstorm Sandy. During Superstorm Sandy, he served as a Public Health Emergency Officer for a small military installation (pop. 3,000) and had over-sight of the emergency response plans…it was a ra-ther sobering insight into preparedness or lack there-of. Since retirement, he has been working on this project

to introduce solar energy on a wide scale in rural areas. His goal is to establish this “start-small” mod-el to reach as many communities as possible and give communities the opportunity to grow their solar farms at their own rate. He also serves as the physician representative on the Governor’s Adviso-ry Council for Public Water Supply. Although his energy-water work is currently independent of Ad-visory Council role, this could be a potential con-duit to bring the concept to a wide Nebraska audi-ence. He has also been working with the town of Emerson on a similar project.
