Polixenes, King of Bohemia, has been on a long visit to the court of his good friend Leontes, King of Sicilia, and his wife, "ueen Hermione. Groundlessly, Leontes becomes convinced that his pregnant wife has been having an a+air with Polixenes.

He then tries to persuade his most trusted advisor, Camillo, to poison Polixenes. Convinced of the queen’s innocence, Camillo warns Polixenes and they depart for Bohemia together.

Leontes is enraged, and ignoring his advisor Antigonus’ protestations, orders Hermione to be arrested for treason. Soon a,er, the queen gives birth to a baby girl. Paulina, Antigonus’ wife, takes the princess to Leontes hoping to so,en him. He refuses to accept the baby as his and orders Antigonus to leave her in the wilderness to die. Leontes tries Hermione for treason; when he denies the truth of the god Apollo’s oracular declaration of her innocence, his son Mamillius dies. He is then told that the queen has also died. !e remorseful King vows to do penance every day for the rest of his life.

Meanwhile, Antigonus leaves the baby girl on the coast of Bohemia, a,er which he is torn to pieces by a bear. An old shepherd and his son -nd the baby, bring her up as a member of their family and name her Perdita.

Sixteen years later, Perdita is being courted by Polixenes’ son, Prince Florizel, who has disguised himself as a shepherd. While the roguish peddler Autolycus tricks the shepherds out of money, Polixenes and Camillo come in disguise to the countryside to spy on Florizel. Revealing himself, the king denounces his son for courting a low-born shepherdess. Florizel and Perdita .ee to Sicilia, with the assistance of Camillo. !e shepherd and his son follow, bringing tokens that reveal Perdita’s true identity.

Florizel and Perdita arrive in Sicilia, and the lovers receive Leontes’ blessing. Polixenes and Camillo arrive shortly therea,er. !e reunited kings realize that Perdita is in fact Leontes’ daughter. !at which was lost having been found, Paulina, the lady most loyal to Hermione, reveals a statue of the dead queen and tells the assembled company to prepare themselves for a great wonder.

A Note from the Artistic Director and Executive Director

The Winter’s Tale is about jealousy, forgiveness and rebirth. It explores themes of time, the power of love and the sometimes dangerous and o,en beautiful landscape of belief. It takes place in two countries, and jumps in time 16 years. !e -rst half of the

play is essentially a tragedy, the middle is a pastoral comedy, and the end pulls it all together with a mystical awakening. Many refer to the play as a fairy tale for adults. Storytelling, and the understanding and meaning of human existence through remembrance and enactment of stories have heavily in.uenced our work on the play.

!ank you for attending our sixth season of Shakespeare in the Park. We cannot do what we love without you, our audience. We hope this is the beginning of a long relationship. Lets build a Shakespeare Festival that the people of Vermont can enjoy every summer for years to come. May our collective belief continue to bring us together to witness the magic of live theatre outdoors in the beautiful state of Vermont.

Enjoy the show!John Nagle and Jena Necrason
