Why? – Because it is the preparatory sketch which reflects that first creative moment: when the artist, no matter how he would be restricted by all later instructions, followed his spontaneous artistic idea. And consequently the sketches may well be regarded as the “originals of the originals”. In particular during the 17th and 18th centuries – which were so enthusiastic about everything endowed with a sensuous dramatic aspect – such display of daring virtuosity was highly esteemed and often collected. It is, therefore, rather difficult to distinguish between the sketches meant for collectors and those used as a basis for further artistic work in the workshops. The first idea (drawing) was followed by a preparatory sketch in oil or wood or terracotta – the “bozzetto” – or even by a “modello”, an accomplished, though smaller, work of art. The former private collection of Kurt and Else Rossacher was trans- formed into a foundation in 1970. It has been kept as the Salzburger Barockmuseum since 1973 and today holds almost 200 bozzetti and 150 drawings. The executed works of art of about 50 preparatory sketches are known. In some cases the work of art itself has been destroyed, the preparatory sketch thus becoming our sole source of knowledge. Among the most important artists displayed at the Salzburger Barockmuseum are: Luca Giordano, Peter Paul Rubens, Giambatti- sta Tiepolo, Joh. Michael Rottmayr, Paul Troger, Joh. Martin Krem- serschmidt, Franz A. Maulbertsch and the sculptors Gianlorenzo Bernini, Michael Zürn d. J., Ignaz Günther and Joh. Baptist Straub. The Museum is located in the building which formerly was theorangery of the Mirabell Gardens. In the so-called “garden-room”the Museum, therefore, displays J. A. Danreiter’s etchings of theGardens, showing how the latter appeared around 1725/28.Owing to its felicitous situation in the Gardens of the MirabellPalace – with the view over theBaroque silhouette ofthe City – the origi-nal and true Ba-roque spirit canbe felt instant-aneously when youenter the Museum.
