Welcome to our 8th Annual QPB Angus Bull Sale! Wow, life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what we’re going to get! For example, the 2015 fall drought, a warm, excellent ryegrass winter, a historic March and August flood, a crazy wet summer followed by unprecedented army worm invasions, and an extended drought at fall planting come to mind pretty easily. If we just think about it, we raise cattle in a roller-coaster world here in the South. However, what also comes to my mind is the resilience and toughness that characterize cattle producers in general, and their willingness over and over to band together, reach out, and help their neighbors in difficult times. It is in these times that we are at our best.

It is our mission at QPB to earn your trust so that during good times or tough times you can rely on a seedstock producer that has your interest and success as the bedrock of our program. Producing bulls that are physically sound, genetically superior, and adapted to our area is what we continue to do year after year. We accomplish this through disciplined cowherd culling, superior, cutting edge genetics combined with the most up to date nutritional requirements. We balance protein, energy, mineral and growth rates that optimize soundness. We produce these animals in the same demanding environment that you know all so well so that they are adapted and will perform.

We present these animals for sale in the most open, transparent sale that you can participate in. All minimum bids are announced prior to the sale so that you can have the assurance that you are always getting a square deal. You can participate in the sale multiple ways. We would love to see you in person March 4, 2017 but if you have other engagements that day, simply call us and we will be happy to show you the bulls prior to the sale by appointment. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

GROWTHCalving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

MATERNALMaternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses).

Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASSThe genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

SALE RULESIt is our goal to create a friendly, open

atmosphere in which to purchase top quality Angus bulls. The following rules have been

drafted with that in mind.

1. All interested buyers sign in at the registration table and receive a numbered buyer’s card.

2. All bulls for sale will be identified by Lot Number.

3. Bulls will be available for inspection prior to the sale by appointment as well as on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 1-5 P.M. and the morning of the sale, March 4, 2017 starting at 8:30 A.M. Pedigrees, EPDs and background information will be available. Gary, Dale and Mike will be available to answer any questions about the bulls.

4. Minimum bid price will be posted on the supplement sheet and available the morning of the sale.

5. Any bulls not sold during the sale will be available on a first come basis for the minimum (starting) price at the end of the sale.

6. Any corrections of printed material will be addressed prior to the sale. Announcements made will supersede sale book information.

7. The auctioneer will have the final say on the last bidder and will settle any discrepancies as fairly as possible.

ADDITIONAL SALE INFORMATION

* Sale Bulls - Bulls will be available for inspection prior to the sale by appointment as well as on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 1-5 P.M. and the morning of the sale, March 4, 2017 starting at 8:30 A.M.

* Registration Certificates - Certificates of each bull will be transferred to the buyer at QPB’s expense. The buyer should be sure to give the clerk the proper name and address for making transfers.

* Health - Health Certificates will be furnished on bulls that require it for shipment. All bulls have been semen tested.

* Mail or Phone Bids - Mail or phone bids will be accepted if you are unable to attend the sale. Please contact one of us beforehand and we will guide you through the process.

* Online Bidding - Real time online bidding available through Superior Livestock. See instructions listed in the sale book.

* Terms and Conditions - The bulls will sell under the suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association. Copies are available by request sale day or can be viewed online at http://www.angus.org/Pub/suggested_sale_terms.pdf.

* Liability - All persons who attend this sale do so at their own risk and owners assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.

* Announcements - Announcements made at the sale by QPB, LLC will take precedence over statements in the sale book.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE AS AN ABSENTEE BUYER

We have made preparations to bid and buy livestock through Superior Productions’ “Call or Click-To-Bid” service for those unable to attend in person on sale day. Please note that all of the lots in the sale will also be available for viewing online prior to sale day at www.superiorlivestock.com.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS— Turn in Bids Over the Phone —

This is our traditional method of buying livestock. To get started, simply go online to www.superiorlivestock.com and click on the tab titled “Register for a Buyer Number.” Select the registration form for Superior Productions and print the registration form, fill it out and fax it in to Superior Productions at (817) 378-3380 with a signature on it, or scan and email the form to [email protected]. You can also mail it in to the address provided on the form. Upon receipt of this information, Superior will call you with a buyer’s number and the bid line phone number that you will use on sale day to place bids over the phone.

— CLICK-TO-BID —This is Superior’s online bidding platform for cattle buying. Please note that high speed internet is required - this is not for dial-up or satellite internet. Registration is free, but you must become a member of www.superiorclicktobid.com to sign up. Becoming a member is easy - just go to the homepage of www.superiorclicktobid.com and follow the outlined steps to get started. Input your information and select a username and password. You will receive an e-mail confirming you are a member. From that point forward, you just have to sign in and select the sale you would like to register for and once approved you will receive an e-mail confirming which sale you are now registered for.

— VIEWING THE AUCTION —There are two places to view the sale broadcast live on the internet: www.superiorlivestock.com or www.superiorclicktobid.com. Just go to the home page of either website and select the auction. If you just want to watch the auction on your computer, smartphone or tablet, go to www.superiorlivestock.com, but if you want to bid over the computer, you must go to www.superiorclicktobid.com.
