8 th July 2016 Dear Parents African Extravaganza Year 1 had a wonderful afternoon on Tuesday 5th July when they performed their 'African Extravaganza' to their families in the Great Hall. This performance was the culmination of their summer term topic on 'Africa'. It was a thoroughly entertaining afternoon of singing, chanting, storytelling, dancing, and drumming whilst also exhibiting their stunning African masks, and wearing their African designed t-shirts and necklaces. The girls performed with great confidence and to such a high standard with precise drumming and many wonderful solo singing items for call and response. Well done Year 1, we are very proud of you. Ugly Bug Ball On Thursday, the Reception girls performed in their Ugly Bug Ball. They were amazing! They spoke confidently and sang their little hearts out. I was so proud of each and every one of them. Girls - you were stars! Miss Davies

Evacuees! On Thursday, Year 5 were evacuated! We have been learning about World War II and we tried to experience what it might have been like. First of all, we got on the us and drove to Brecon. We were all dressed in old fashioned clothes, and we had gas mask boxes and identification tags. When we got there, we hopped on a train at Pant Station. We went on a lovely ride on the steam train and sang songs, like ‘It’s A Long Way To Tipperary’, on the way. On the way back, we were given our delicious sweet and chocolate rations. When we got back to Pant Station, we had our WWII lunch. We had a choice of jam or paste sandwiches, or bread and butter. The paste wasn’t as bad as we thought it was going to be! We also had a choice of apple or carrot sticks. We had a really good time, but it made us realise how sad and difficult it would have been to be evacuated, even though it was to keep children safe. Storey Arms What a fantastic time we've all had! Caves have been explored, canals canoed and gorges walked! The girls have giggled their way through every challenge and have really done themselves proud. Thank you to Miss Kenyon, Miss Christmas, Miss Ashman, Mrs Baker and Mrs Dunstan for giving up their valuable time to accompany the girls.

Sports Day We look forward to welcoming our parents with girls in Reception to Year 6 to join us for Sports Day on the Senior School sports field. Races commence at 1.00pm, but please come and enjoy your picnic lunch from 12 noon.

Message from Mrs Davis

I am absolutely delighted to be back following my successful knee operation and I’m well on the road to recovery. Many thanks to Mrs Chyba and Mrs Ashill who have been Acting Principals in my absence. They, along with the Leadership Team, have done an excellent job and have taken on extra responsibilities while I have been away. I am extremely grateful to them all. It has been an exciting week to return as, on Monday, we launched our inaugural Tele-Campaign, the first school in the GDST to run such a campaign. Our team of student callers are enjoying talking to members of our unique community about Howell’s and we have been thrilled with the positive response we have received to date. Have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to welcoming students back on Monday for the last week of term, during which our Summer Fair will take place so I hope the sun shines for us. Today I was delighted to welcome over 30 Hywelians, friends and Nursery parents to the annual Founders’ Assembly during which we heard from students about how they are fundraising for bursaries and building alumni relations. It was also a treat to enjoy the latest instalment of our Oral History Project. Former Head Boy, Robert L, and his sensational acapella singing group, All the Kings’ Men, entertained us royally. Look out for more information in my update next week.

Intrepid cyclists complete Champagne Cycle Challenge

Many congratulations and thanks to the 120 cyclists (students, staff, parents, families, friends, governors and Hywelians) who took part in our fourth Champagne Cycle Challenge, Waves and Wheels, on Sunday 3rd July on a rare beautiful sunny day. Click here for more information.
