Introduction

To help determine your network’s readiness for VoIP, 8x8 provides our customers with three

VoIP readiness tools . This document provides detailed information on the 8x8 Network

Monitoring Tool which monitors your network for hours or days to generate a report on

latency, jitter, and packet loss over a sustained time period .

We generally recommend that you start with our first two VoIP readiness tools to get an

instant snapshot of your Internet connection performance and your network attributes

before using the Network Monitoring Tool .

Overview of 8x8 VoIP Readiness Tools

Test #1: VoIP Quality and Connectivity speed

Purpose: Tests your Internet connection to determine how many concurrent VoIP calls it can

support, your upload and download speed, and quality of service . The results of this test may

vary based on what time of day you run it and other activity on your network . This test is a

good way to prequalify your network for VoIP phone service .

Test #2: Network Diagnostic Tool

Purpose: Takes a snapshot of the following network attributes that affect 8x8 VoIP call

quality:

•DNS service

•Network path characteristics

•NAT/Firewall/Router characteristics

•Packet loss rates

• Jitter levels (changes in network traffic delivery times)

•Round trip network delay (latency) between your network and the 8x8 servers

If you run the Network Diagnostic Tool and the report says OK on all parameters, but you still

have call quality issues, then the 8x8 Network Monitoring Tool may help identify the cause

of network issues .

Test #3: The 8x8 Network Monitoring Tool

Purpose: Measures latency, packet loss and jitter on your network over a sustained time

frame of one to several days . It can help uncover time-of-day events which are missed in the

prior tests .

Note: You must be an 8x8 customer or qualified prospective customer to run this test .

Please call 8x8 Support to obtain an Activation Key .

The Network Monitoring Tool

The 8x8 Network Monitoring Tool helps you measure your network performance over

time, relative to 8x8 Virtual Office telephone service . It measures latency, packet loss

and jitter over your network . You download and install the application on a Microsoft

Windows computer .

This tool is only for use by 8x8 customers or qualified prospective customers . You will need

to call 8x8 Support to obtain a license key to activate the Network Monitoring Tool.

Please consult your 8x8 support representative to review and interpret results .

Getting Accurate Results

To obtain the most meaningful results:

1 . Make sure that the Windows machine running the tests is only running the 8x8 Network

Monitoring Tool . Running other Microsoft Windows applications simultaneously may

cause inaccurate results .

2 . Plan to test your network for an extended period of time as indicated by your 8x8

support representative . The time frame can vary from several hours to one month .

3 . Save the test results and email them to your 8x8 support representative .

Installation

The 8x8 Network Monitoring Tool runs on your Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, or 7 operating

system and must be connected to the same logical LAN (Local Area Network) as the 8x8

IP phone devices . Be sure the test computer is connected to your network with an

Ethernet cable .

Operating the tool uses approximately 34MB of RAM and utilizes less than 1% of computer

CPU processing power (based on a dual-core 2 .53GHz laptop computer) .

Download the application from http://sims .8x8 .com/GetDocument .aspx?docid=710581 and

save it to your computer .

Uncompress the .zip file and double-click on the Setup.exe file . Follow the installation wizard

instructions .

1 . Open the .zip file

2 . Double-click Setup.exe to install the application

3 . Follow the wizard instructions to complete installation

Start and Configure Network Diagnostics Tool

Run the application from Windows Start menu and start the application by clicking on the

launch icon .

Select Test, then Settings

For each installation of this application, a unique product activation key is required . A unique

key can be acquired from your 8x8 Support Representative . You will receive the Activation

Key via email from your 8x8 Support Representative .

From the Settings dialog box, select Company Details, then Update Registration Details .

Please fill out your Account and Contact Details completely . Next, please copy and paste the

Product Activation Key into the four boxes .

The application is now activated and ready to use as shown below . Please click the

Setup Tests tab .

Setup Tests

Please leave the settings as-is with the default values shown below . You can select between

Codec G .729 to test regular 8x8 telephone calls, Codec G .711 to test conference-bridge,

voice mail, IVR recordings or Codec G .722 to test HD Voice .

Start Monitoring

The Network Diagnostic Tool has default warnings selected . In most cases, please leave

settings as is . Please press OK to continue .

Please start the test by pressing the Start Monitoring button . We recommend running the

test for several hours up to several days . The test will continue to run until you return to

the computer and press the Stop Monitoring button . Please check with your 8x8 Support

Representative for the amount of time recommended for your test .

The Average over time time range does not affect the test results, you can change it during

or after the test to view different time frames .

Generate the Report

Once the test is complete, generate the report and email it to your 8x8 Support

Representative .

Select Generate Report

Your report will be generated as a text file and look something like this .

Save the report to your computer .

You’ll be asked to create a folder for the report . Select Yes .

Email the test results as an attachment to the 8x8 Support Representative you are

working with .
