I’m leafing through the pages of the book about Tita-nus that supports the Retrospettiva. Before becoming immersed in the words, I’m caught by the expressive force of the accompanying images. Anna Magnani and Alberto Sordi, Silvana Mangano and Aldo Fabrizi, Totò and Renato Rascel… whether studied poses or snapshots stolen on set, they form a gallery of films able to sublimate an entire society and its character-istics. Titanus-branded productions – starting from the unforgettable Il Gattopardo – have the power to go beyond the real into a world that today is no longer possible.

Instead, reality pervades contemporary Italian cinema: in Perfidia, which turns the father-son relationship in a provincial city like Sassari not so much into a model of the absence of relationships, but a prism through which we can read a country that has stopped com-municating and is contenting itself with survival.

Perhaps even more significant in this respect is the dia-chronic perspective adopted by Gianfranco Pannone in Sul vulcano, a story with multiple “texts” about a place very close to the director’s heart. Archive footage and images of reality contribute to creating a mosaic where the past coexists with the present, where the individual detaches from collectivity in order to repre-sent it at another level.

The young protagonist of Damien Manivel’s film, shot in Sète, wants to become a poet. In a meticulous, al-most programmatic way, he seeks inspiration, at times relying on his intuition but more often on alcohol, and ending up every evening in front of the grave of the poet whose spirit has inspired him. Un jeune poète is a film about the ineffability of poetry, that thing which – as Pasolini made Totò say – escapes if you name it. Like clouds. So there is not much poetry in the young poet’s notebook, but Manivel’s film ends up being “poetic” precisely in the absence of lyrical inspiration. Poetic because it is able to create a reality, instead of reproducing it in its banality.

È una scena che balla nell’immaginario filmico di tutti i tempi. Le arie del Valzer brillante di Verdi che gonfiano l’atmosfera del palazzo nobiliare palermitano, l’abito bianco di Angelica (Claudia Cardinale) che scivola a passo di danza col principe Fabrizio di Salina (Burt Lancaster), mentre attorno, tra coppie in costu-me, candelabri, drappi e ventagli che sbattono è tutto “un grande arazzo cine-matografico”.

Proprio come definisce Il Gattopardo Martin Scorsese, l’uomo che attraverso la propria fondazione (e la perizia del laboratorio di restauro L’Immagine Ritro-vata della Cineteca di Bologna) si è impegnato in prima persona perché il capola-voro di Luchino Visconti venisse ripristinato allo splendore di una visione senza graffi e vivificata dalla nitidezza dei colori originali. Del resto, la frase-emblema dello stesso film, pronunciata dal Tancredi-Delon (“Se vogliamo che tutto riman-ga com’è, bisogna che tutto cambi”), è la chiave di volta attorno a cui ruota quel grande affresco che abita le cuciture tra la fine di un’epoca e la nuova in arrivo, dopo lo sbarco di Garibaldi in Sicilia nel 1860.

E se le vicende sono tratte dall’omonimo romanzo di Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, il trasbordo cinematografico del Gattopardo nel 1963 avviene sotto l’insegna produttiva di quello scudo Titanus a cui Locarno dedica quest’anno la retrospettiva. L’epica di un film in costume sul costume del tempo, frizionato attraverso un cast in stato di grazia (Cardinale, Lancaster, Delon, Stoppa) e cor-roborato nella cura di ogni minimo dettaglio dal genio di Visconti, che qui esalta tutte le potenzialità della messinscena. E lo fa compattando in un’unica visione d’insieme due mondi che arrivano a pestarsi i piedi per convivere.

Il tramonto dell’aristocrazia della vecchia Sicilia che avviene mentre ai suoi bordi sale il nuovo della borghesia che spinge per l’unità d’Italia. Un abbraccio decadente che trova il suo sigillo spettacolare nel gran ballo finale, al termine del quale per il principe sarà già tempo di fare un bilancio della propria esistenza.

Vermi sottocutanei che fuoriescono dalla pupilla, mattanze notturne e riti voodoo, finestre sul cortile, bambini che gioca-no al buio con gli arti mutilati della loro amichetta che ha appena festeggiato il compleanno… Che cos’è? Sembrano Da-vid Cronenberg, Jacques Tourneur, Alfred Hitchcock, Mario Bava… Invece è Dario Argento. E questi sono solo alcuni dei suoi terrificanti Incubi…

Ma partiamo dall’inizio. L’inizio si chia-ma Enzo Tortora, che nel 1987 chiamò Ar-gento a partecipare al programma Tv per la Rai Giallo e a realizzare una serie di film brevi. Per Argento fu un ritorno in televi-sione dopo la serie La porta sul buio da lui stesso prodotta e presentata nel 1973, e fu un ritorno mozzafiato. I corti alla fine furono nove (di circa tre minuti l’uno) e, a rivederli oggi, colpiscono anzitutto per la concezione complessiva dell’intervento fil-mico-televisivo. Se da un lato, per intensità e concentrazione, l’idea è quella di scheg-giare il flusso Tv, di inocularvi un virus in grado di scalfire la rigidità del palinsesto,

dall’altro l’uso atipico della voce narrante (di Argento stesso), così calda e suggestiva, rimanda a una distensione del racconto altrettanto sovversiva e non facilmente as-sorbibile nei tempi televisivi. Questi lampi horror hanno in effetti una durata quasi punk, sono brevi frasi strozzate in gola, ra-schianti colpi di tosse che, quando si rendo-no conto di aver creato l’atmosfera giusta, letteralmente, e senza rimorso alcuno, si interrompono. Ma al tempo stesso la nenia dolcemente spaventosa del regista-presen-tatore, che introduce il film (con a fianco, bisogna ricordarlo, una estatica e inquie-tante Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni), ma che poi ne entra a pieno titolo a far parte, sposta l’attenzione su un differente livello tempo-rale e spaziale della paura. Come se fosse intorno al fuoco di notte in un bosco a rac-contare favole horror a un gruppo di bambi-ni, Argento appare all’interno del corto per scene di raccordo, anzi concependo se stes-so come raccordo interno al montaggio. A questo si aggiunge il discorso tutt’altro che trascurabile sul sogno, concepito come una

risalita fulminea fino all’immagine origina-ria che l’ha generato. E qui bisogna tenersi forte, chi pensava di continuare a dormire si sveglia di soprassalto: altissimo tasso di violenza e di erotismo, sbudellamenti e mostruose apparizioni, perversioni e spie-tatezza all’altezza dell’horror più truculen-to e sperimentale. Il tutto, infine, commen-tato da una soundtrack a dir poco geniale e nervosissima, con cui Argento unisce capo-lavori dai suoi film come The Maggots di Simon Boswell (leitmotiv della serie, preso da Phenomena), Piume di cristallo di Mor-ricone (da L’uccello dalle piume di cristal-lo), Opera di Simonetti (dal film omonimo), a un pastiche pop-punk-heavy che va dai Sex Pistols a Michael Jackson. In definitiva, benché già allora forieri di grandi attenzioni e polemiche, oggi possiamo dire che questi sconvolgenti mini-clip restano, per forza visiva e teorica, uno dei punti più alti della cinematografia del Maestro.

The Festival del film Locarno is celebrating its 67° edition with the introduction of the Wall of Fame, a series of plates signed by the guests which will preserve the memo-ry of their passage. Launched this year by PardoLive, it is result of an idea of the Ti-cinese director Niccolò Castelli who two years ago took part to the Concorso Cine-asti del presente with Tutti Giù and is cur-rently responsible of the Locarno67 WebTV.

“It was fundamental to introduce something that could last” he claims. “PardoLive’s multimedial approach to the

Festival is massive, then I knew that we needed something more material. I was go-ing to Locarno by train and I thought about one of the last Roger Federer’s matches in Wimbledon, where the players are used to sign the cameras after playing. It was a good idea”.

Everything went very quickly: Castelli went to Plastiplex offices and spent a whole afternoon discussing about materials, col-ours and focal distances. “Shooting the mo-ment in which the Festival guests sign their plate is crucial: I wanted to capture all their

reactions to a gesture which is pretty wide-spread in the world of sports, but not at the movie festivals. Sometimes directors have to sign posters or memorial objects, but plates in the front of a camera represent surely something new”.

The Wall of Fame will then be exposed in the next years to always remember this 67° edition. Because the world is full of walls made of bricks or stones, steel or glass. But only Locarno has a wall made of stars.

Cycling Between Life and Death

The taboo topic of euthanasia slides in to a carefree cycling holiday with friends. These two opposites are short-circuited together, sending them pedalling along for the limited time span of a trip, amidst anxieties, compassion and vital forces, in the fifth film by German director Christian Zübert, Hin und weg. A kind of “hit and run” that this evening will cut across the Piazza Grande screen with the emotional

diagonal of a tragicomedy, able to accen-tuate the dialectical friction between life and death.

On the one hand, the emotion that in-creases feelings of defeat in the face of the announcement of an incurable degenerati-ve disease, on the other the rationality that seeks to avoid the decline of physical de-terioration by choosing a voluntary death. With all the consequences that rebound

Cycling Between Life and Death

on the lives of others, forever in disequili-brium, because the screenplay of feelings and reactions can only proceed by jerks and accumulations. All the more so if the narrative hourglass of the film is based on the playful annual ritual of a cycling trip with old friends, this year to Belgium, the destination chosen by 36-year-old Hannes (Florian David Fitz), where he will take part in another ritual.

The trip thus becomes a journey of ini-tiation towards loss and abandonment, which by way of a classic game of oppo-sites evolves towards the contrary move-ment, an attempt to squeeze all possible vital euphoria out of every instant left to live together. For the protagonist, but also for the rest of this diverse crew of wives and friends (Julia Koschitz, Jürgen Vogel, Johannes Allmayer, Victoria Mayer…), each

one of whom brings their own neuroses and biographical trajectories, some mar-ried with children, others eternally single. At the end their complicity becomes a kind of emotional beacon that forces everyone to come to terms with their own existence.

Bonifacio Angius è nato e ha girato Perfidia a Sassari, in Sardegna, territorio che al cine-ma italiano recente non ha offerto più spes-so gli scenari delle coste e dell’interno, che quelli delle men che anonime periferie di questo suo capoluogo. Angelo, interpretato dall’imperturbabile e sorprendente Stefano Deffenu, incarna alla perfezione le immor-tali liriche, ben note ad ogni appassionato italiano di musica rock, cantate da Giovan-ni Lindo Ferretti della band CCCP ai tempi dell’album 1964-1985 Affinità-divergenze fra il compagno Togliatti e noi – Del conse-guimento della maggiore età: non studia, non lavora, non guarda la tv, non va al cine-ma, non fa sport. Il titolo di uno di quei pezzi era Io sto bene, ma Angelo sembra non star bene per niente, e anche se è difficile coglie-

re l’espressione di una qualsiasi emozione tra i suoi capelli arruffati e la barba sfatta, il suo evidente quanto silenzioso smarrimen-to è quello tipico di un’intera generazione di trentenni, e di fronte a crisi e solitudine non basta più appellarsi come da bambini al buon Gesù e dividere il mondo in buoni e cattivi. Nel disperato e tardivo tentativo di conoscere il figlio, trovargli un lavoro, farlo parlare, fargli confessare almeno un interes-se o un desiderio, il padre Peppino ingaggia con lui dialoghi scostanti e surreali, in cui i monosillabi e i silenzi di Angelo dimostrano come, oltre che delle sicurezze e speranze conosciute dai loro padri, la sua generazio-ne è rimasta orfana anche delle parole per raccontarsi. Ad Angius però non interessa la sociologia spicciola: traccia, è vero, due per-

sonaggi tanto comuni quanto gli ambienti che attraversano (l’appartamento piccolo-borghese, il bar, l’ospedale, il luna park), ma sotto la superficie della mediocrità familiare e provinciale cova un film profondamente doloroso il cui titolo evoca non a caso un melodramma alla Matarazzo, in un ipotetico legame con la Retrospettiva Titanus capace di scavalcare generi e generazioni: Perfidia è un film sull’Italia di oggi che ha la crudeltà di un cinema italiano d’altri tempi.

After the uproar over Vol Spécial, Fer-nand Melgar returns to Locarno with a film that might seem less dramatic in content but which is equally tough on ex-posing a dysfunction within the world’s oldest democracy. L’Abri, the small and anonymous refuge in Lausanne which opens its doors to 50 fortunate homeless people on the coldest nights of the year, has what it takes to serve as a clear meta-phor for reading the situation of Swit-zerland, following February’s success-ful referendum on curbing immigration. Filming the nightly ritual that requires the wardens to make an absurd selection between who can enter and who instead must spend the long winter’s night on the city’s streets, Melgar offers us an image as specific as it is dense in meaning. An im-age that applies, in an obstinately annoy-ing way, not only to Switzerland but to the Western world and its new role as barrier/landing stage for the new citizens. The to-

pography of the place does the rest: me-tallic barricades glittering in the dark, cold steel doors that open for a brief instant to swallow up the lucky ones. And all around a turmoil, to be honest a little too com-posed. Being inside or remaining outside: L’Abri constructs its drama on this oppo-sition to which the world seems to have become accustomed. Following one of his favourite rules, Fernand Melgar does not take sides, though his sympathies are clear to even a minimally trained eye. His style of filmmaking does not emphasize the hypocritical fiction of those who es-pouse the position of the suffering; he avoids any imposition, even though, per-haps for the first time, he plays on a more marked proximity. Portraits thus emerge from the depths of the night, created by fragments, where more than words or ac-tions, what counts is a glance. Or choos-ing to share the winter cold.

“ Ho appena ottenuto il diploma, le cose serie iniziano! Quando ho ricevuto questo focoso sms di Rémi ho immediatamente saputo che era il momento buono per rifare un film insieme. L’estate dei suoi 18 anni… L’indomani avevamo luogo, storia e titolo. Le riprese sono iniziate tre settimane dopo ”damien manivel

You may be one of those who would rather have a nightmare than a beautiful dream, because you prefer to be relieved when waking up rather than disappointed. A lady shares this sentiment with the lead charac-ter of Damien Manivel’s fresh and enjoy-able first feature Un jeune poète. But she immediately feels that something isn’t quite right in her observation. Maybe any dream is better than none? They remind you that you are alive.

Rémi’s dream is both simple and incred-ibly ambitious: he wants to be a poet. He would like to know how to sublimate real-ity with words and celebrate life and tell the wonders of the Mediterranean landscape through which he nonchalantly wanders. And it’s not by chance that he’s chosen to spend the Summer in the southern French town of Sète – a famous poet, his idol, is bur-ied in its lovely seaside cemetery.

It strikes us that Rémi has aptitudes that are bound to serve this goal – he is obser-vant, sensitive, enthusiastic and open to dis-

coveries and encounters. But does he have the talent? This doubt is creeping. He needs reassurance, and the certainty that inspira-tion is within his reach. Hell, he’d even resort to dubious methods to find it. And when ar-tificial paradises fail him, he calls out to the trees and butterflies for support.

After all, Rémi is only 17, and everything seems new and grand. Love burns his stom-ach – butterflies again. Nature’s indiffer-ence to the young man’s calls feels cruel. But if the famous poet were to grant Rémi the response that he couldn’t get from the skies and the waves, perhaps his wandering wasn’t so aimless?

Something is certain: this way of making films with spontaneity and patience alike bear fruit, in the true lineage of the French New Wave. Manivel’s film is youthful and energizing. It breathes.

capace di individuare sofisticate geometrie tra i vari piani di un paesaggio tra i più bel-li al mondo, le diagonali del vulcano sono evidenziate dalle sagome degli escursioni-sti che piccoli si stagliano ora sulla pianura, ora sulla città, ora sul blu del mare sotto-stante. Questa stratificazione di colori allu-de al progetto del film. Sul vulcano è infatti una pellicola dalla struttura vertiginosa: ai ritratti di un’umanità singolare che cerca di vivere e di lavorare in una delle regioni più densamente popolate al mondo sono asso-

ciate le fantastiche sequenze dell’eruzione del ’44 e passi della letteratura che sul Ve-suvio è fiorita. Tentativo di restituire la ric-chezza di un luogo con la sovrabbondanza di materia, Sul vulcano è un film che va ol-tre la concezione classica del documentario per offrirsi come un’opera totale.

Stop the ViolenceTo strengthen democracy, peace and human rights around the world: this is the ambitious objective of Democracy Without Borders, an initiative launched at the 67° Festival del film Locarno (as part of the Open Doors section) by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). The first event – in the presence of the President of the Swiss Confederation Didier Burkhalter – is scheduled on August 10th in L’altra Sala and will include a panel discussion (hosted by Reto Ceschi) on the issue of impunity for violence against women and girls around the world.

Sexual violence is often used as a systematic weapon of warfare, but it is also a phenomenon that persists in the aftermath of conflicts with devastat-ing long-term effects on the victims. In order to deepen the discussion about the different challenges women face in Africa and around the globe, the Ti-cinese journalist of the Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana (RSI) is go-ing to talk with Navanethem “Navi” Pillay (UN High Commissioner for Human Rights), Venantie Bisimwa Nabintu (Executive Secretary of the Congolese NGO “Réseau des Femmes pour la défense des Droits et la Paix”), Danaé van der Straten Ponthoz (Legal Adviser with the NGO “TRIAL”), Giancarlo De Picciotto (Head of the Swiss Cooperation Office for the Great Lakes Region), the film’s director Zeresenay Berhane Mehari and its producer Mehret Mandefro.

The organization of a panel discussion involving Swiss and international people who are active in development cooperation projects represents only a part of Switzerland’s long-standing commitment to combat sexual violence. The FDFA, in fact, is currently involved in three projects: in Honduras project ambassadors are helping young people to escape poverty and violence, while in Tunisia some others are working to strengthen the role of women in poli-tics and to improve the quality of the media. In the African Great Lakes region (Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda) finally, other profes-sionals are providing medical, psychosocial and legal aid to victims of (sexual) gender-based violence according to the programme of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Hirut la coraggiosaDifret: è un titolo dalle molte implicazioni quello scelto da Zeresenay Berhane Mehari per il suo lungometraggio d’esordio. Innan-zitutto è, come il film, in amarico, lingua ufficiale dell’Etiopia, a indicare la volon-tà di sviluppare un cinema radicato nella propria patria – scopo particolarmente ri-levante trattandosi della quarta pellicola lì prodotta. In secondo luogo perché è una parola polisemica che sintetizza i due temi del film: significa infatti sia “coraggioso”, sia “vittima di stupro”. E proprio intorno al co-raggio di Hirut, ragazza che, com’è uso nel-le sue campagne, viene rapita e violentata dall’uomo che vuole sposarla, ruota tutta la trama di un film basato su fatti reali: la giovane, per difendersi, ucciderà il rapitore, rischiando la condanna a morte per omici-dio. Grazie a un’avvocatessa che si batte per i diritti delle donne, Hirut sfiderà usanze e leggi per difendere la sua libertà a decidere del proprio destino.

Difret affronta lo scontro tra tradizio-ne e modernità enfatizzando le differenze tra il mondo rurale di Hirut e quello urba-no dell’avvocatessa; differenze enfatizzate dalla domanda densa d’implicazioni della ragazza: «Non sei sposata perché sei una persona cattiva?».

Il confronto tra tradizione e influssi mo-dernizzanti, provenienti in parte dall’Occi-dente, si rispecchia nella struttura del film, che s’ispira ai legal drama d’America (dove il regista si è formato) per sviluppare una tra-ma ancorata – in temi, struttura e tempi – nella realtà etiope. Difficile dunque sceglie-re un’opera più adatta di questa, prodotta da Angelina Jolie e insignita del premio del pubblico al Sundance, per introdurre la ta-vola rotonda Democracy Without Borders.

C’è qualcosa di nuovo a Fortaleza. Sulle onde corte della clandestinità si diffonde una trasmissione radio rivoluzionaria. Le frequenze tradizionali vengono invase da un nervoso tsunami di parole, provocazio-ni, citazioni, impulsi sonori. Anno dopo anno, l’impegno assunto dal Fe-stival del film Locarno per assicurare una manifestazione a impatto ambientale neu-tro prosegue e si arricchisce di nuovi part-ner, progetti, collaborazioni. E idee, che si diffondono con la forza dirompente di un fiume. E se le personalità s’immortalano con tanto di Piazza Grande alle spalle, il pubblico non è da meno. Ora tutti loro potranno sperimen-tare una novità: scattarsi un PardoSelfie con Stouch, la tecnologia che permette di foto-grafarsi in luoghi-simbolo del Festival (il tap-peto rosso di Piazza Grande, Sopracenerina, lo Spazio Cinema e L’altra Sala) e di ricevere automaticamente le immagini al proprio indirizzo e-mail in una cornice d’eccezio-

ne. Funziona così: all’Information Desk in Sopracenerina si può acquistare per 2 CHF un braccialetto giallo collegato al proprio indirizzo e-mail. Le fotocamere situate negli snodi strategici del Festival rilevano il brac-ciale e scattano un ritratto di chi l’indossa, che viene inviato alla sua casella di posta elettronica corredato di programma del gior-no, logo del Festival e bottoni per condivider-lo subito sui social network.
