entire settlement into a failed IT company. “There are two reasons that is very unlikely to happen here, one iwi have big brother down the road in Ngai Tahu who has been there and done that and they are very will-ing to lend their help and expertise. Sec-ondly, and they’ll hate me saying this, but Maori are very conservative investors. They will scrutinise any business before investing.”The investment will “inevitably” see more people moving to the region on the back of the settlement and more Maori-owned companies in Nelson and Tasman says Geoff. “The whole community will benefit from this because Maori see themselves as guardians of this area. They have been here for hundreds of years and will be here hundreds of years from now so their goals are in sync with the rest of the community, clean water, sustainable practices and en-suring future generations have opportuni-ties.”

Bill Findlater says Nelson is on the cusp of a “very bright future” on the back of the food the region produces and the likely investment from iwi.“I have a firm belief that Nelson will be one of the leading regions in New Zea-land, it’s bloody ex-citing. The strength of our region is our primary sector and I would expect iwi to look to our primary sector in different forms to invest in and that will create opportunities not only for iwi but for the rest of the region.”Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the coun-cil already has a strong relationship with Maori and the settlement is great news for the region. “It’s the biggest economic development gain in the region and it’s probably one of

the biggest cash injections that Nelson has ever seen. They want to keep the money in the region and they are long-term players so it’s a very good thing. It can only be ex-tremely positive for Nelson.”Four years ago iwi received an aquacul-ture settlement from the government and Geoff says that experience will help iwi plan and move forward with its latest set-tlement. “They’ve already started working on collaboration and they’ve started work-ing with a lot of businesses around town discreetly. I think people would be quite amazed where they have got money in-vested if they knew.”Geoff says most Nelsonians have little idea about the scale of the investment and it will flow to the whole community. “What’s good for Maori is good for the whole com-munity. This isn’t a takeover or a ‘you’ll do it my way now’, it’s actually ‘let’s work in partnership and make a better region’.”The conference for local iwi and businesses is to be held on October 18 and 19 at the Rutherford Hotel.

For the first time in five years a cruise liner will dock at Port Nelson, a significant step in the re-gion capturing some of the lucrative cruise ship market, says Nelson Tasman Tourism. Two German luxury liners will arrive in Feb-ruary and March next year, with another con-firmed to visit on Christmas Eve 2013. NTT chief executive Lynda Keene says the bookings are great news for the region as the in-dustry records staggering double digit growth over the past three years in New Zealand.NTT worked with Port Nelson to se-cure the bookings and Lynda says the opportunity for growth is huge. “That’s just the start. We think there is a lot of potential around that and we’re target-ing ships at 1000 passengers or less, the high end of the market.”The ships coming here this summer will have between 450-500 passengers with 80 per cent likely to do activities on-shore.“We’ve got some ideas about creating an experi-ence for them when they get off the ship, based around the creative arts and craft beer trail here in Nelson,” says Lynda. The news comes as the tourism industry reports major shifts in the likely visitors to our shores. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio attended the Tour-ism Industry Association summit in Wellington last week where the message was “get ready for change”.“We were told that the market has shifted dra-

matically in the past 12 months. Visitors from the United States and Europe have dropped off but it will be offset by a 33 per cent increase in tourists from China and an increase from Aus-tralia,” says Aldo.Lynda says NTT identified Asia several years ago and has already been working to bring Asian tourists to Nelson and Tasman. “We’re not re-sponding to these trends, we actually identified these trends 12 to 24 months ago and started

that work. We are clearly aligned with what is happening internationally but we think our traditional markets will still be key for us this summer. That and domestic tourists, especially from Canterbury.”A major NTT domestic campaign with Air New Zealand is due to start on Thursday says Lynda as recent re-search reveals almost 70 per cent of New Zealanders are committed to seeing more of their country, accord-ing to AA Travel. In more good news for the regional

tourism promoter, the prime minister backed public money being spent on promoting the country and its regions, according to Aldo.“John Key laboured the point that public money should be spent on attracting tourism because it has direct and indirect benefits to local busi-nesses. Developing our brand through tourism overseas also helps our exports. It should be seen as the branding of our economy. Because we are a food-producer it’s about safe food and high standards, which all comes across in our clean, pure image.”

Breast cancer trust ready for boot camp

Trainer Greg Witika will lead the Boot Camp for Breast Cancer fundraiser at the Nelson College for Girls gym later this month. With him are trust members from left; Kim Proctor-Western, Kate Coote, Lloyd Harwood, Kim Miccio and Bridget Harwood. Photo: Andrew Board.

The trustees of the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust are fit and raring to go for its bi-annual boot camp fun-draiser.Well, raring to go at least. The boot camp is aimed for people of all ages and abilities and focuses on fun, more than fitness. It was held for the first time two years ago for the launch of the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust. Around 400 people turned up that day and helped raised around $36,000 for the trust, which used the money to buy

a portable ultrasound machine for local women. The troops are preparing for another big day with this year’s boot camp to be held on Sunday, October 28 at the Nel-son College for Girls gym.Organiser Kate Coote says the event will be great fun and she is hoping for even more people than the inaugural event. “Everyone’s invited, it’s really good fun and it doesn’t matter if you’re by your-self or in a team, man or woman, super fit or not at all. We encourage everyone

to get dressed up and have fun.”Money raised from this year’s event will go towards a travel fund for local wom-en to help get them back to Nelson from radiation treatment in Christchurch or Wellington if necessary. The trust also funds the Fit Flamingos initiative to help keep women who have had breast cancer fit and healthy. Kate says the trust has some other ide-as but can’t confirm them just yet. For more information about the fundraiser, or to register, visit www.nrbct.co.nz.

I was in hysterics over the recent Nelson Mail story on council spending for marketing. How hypocritical, although very predictable by the Mail reporters. Two things here, a council that communicates keeps confusion and disagreement to a minimum with the ratepayer therefore reducing costs overall. So keep it up Nelson City Council. The Mail story was really a nothing story and I suspect more motivated by early campaigning by a frustrated ex mayoral candidate in Rachel Reese. Also ask yourself why the council chooses the city’s new newspaper over the Mail, it must have something to do with the free-fall of the Mail readership and circulation. The council has an obligation to inform the greater mass and that’s not with the Mail. To Aldo and his team, go for it and brush these lightweights aside. To the Nelson Weekly keep it up it’s nice to be able to disagree and get printed!L Simpson (Mrs), Nelson.

Two of Nelson’s inventive trolley builders came head-to-head on Sunday in a unique challenge. The event was designed as a fun day for trolley enthusiasts and the public, and the challenge was to convert and power a racing trolley using 18 volt power drills. The trolleys raced in Nelson’s first ever Trolley Derby power drill challenge on Sunday with the help of Power Techs new mobile solar charger.Tim Bayley and Gordon Dacombe competed to see whose trolley could get the farthest around the velodrome track at Trafalgar park, and Gordon’s ‘Lightning Racer II’ wowed bystanders reaching speeds of 37km. Tim and Gordon are both members of the Nelson Trolley Club and Gordon’s grandchildren Morgan and Jared

Dacombe battled it out at the track in the two creations. The two trolleys were both successful on the day, as Jared lapped Morgan almost three times before running out of juice, while Morgan only reached speed of 19.4km, his batteries outlasted its speedier counterpart by completing two more laps.Gordon enjoyed the friendly competition and was excited to build on the project as an annual day. “We hope this will inspire inventive people in Nelson to say, ‘there’s a challenge I could have a go at’, there’s a lot of people that love building stuff in their shed who would enjoy this.”Power Techs new mobile solar charger came down to provide free recharging of batteries for the racers throughout the day.

Salisbury School’s last standSalisbury School representatives hope a last minute meeting with the minister of education can save the school, two weeks after its final submission deadline.Salisbury School principal Brenda Ellis will meet Hekia Parata in Wellington with board of trustees members Helen McDon-nell, Peter Campbell and Kelly Wood. Kel-ly currently has a daughter attending the school while both Helen and Peter have

had children through in the past. The Ministry of Education is looking at closing two schools for students with in-tellectual disabilities or social-behaviour difficulties in favour of a wrap around ser-vice at public schools. It is also encourag-ing Salisbury School students to attend the co-education Halswell Residential School in Christchurch. The visit to Wellington will be the first time that anyone from the

school has had the chance to talk face-to-face with the minister of education regard-ing the future of the school. Helen says the quartet is keen to hear from the minister directly on what her views are for retain-ing Salisbury. “We really appreciate the minister opening her door to us and as we want a positive and constructive meeting. We have agreed as a board not to discuss the details of our response to the minister

prior to our meeting with her on October 16. The doors have not closed on Salisbury yet, and we are doing everything we can to keep them open for the current and future students of Salisbury,” she says. The Ministry of Education released what was expected to be its final decision last month. It gave the school 28 days to chal-lenge the decision to close the school be-fore the end of the year.

Local hairdressers off to nationals

Finalists Louise Wells of Ursula Harris Hair, left, and Donna James of Donna James Hair will be representing Nelson at the national hair awards in Auckland this weekend. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Two Nelson hairdressers are off to represent the region at the country’s top hairdressing competition this weekend.Donna James, of Donna James Hair, is a finalist in the urban day section at the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers annual awards, while Louise Wells, of Ursu-la Harris will compete in the urban colour section of the awards. The duo earned their spot in the national final after winning the re-gional competition in Blenheim in August. Competing at nationals is

nothing new for Donna, who has won many titles and is the current champion for best photographic shot. Nelson is also the defending supreme team from the last nation-als, held in Christchurch two years ago, where Nelson hairdresser Ur-sula Harris also won the urban day section. Anna Schryvers, of Tonic in Richmond, was selected for the team in the directional cut, urban night section but was unable to at-tend. The four person supreme team is rounded out by two Blenheim hairdressers.

Nelson nurse helping people see againLocal nurse Faith Fawcett’s vacation has been a rather eye-opening trip. The Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village nurse is currently in West Africa helping hundreds of blind patients see again with a simple cataract operation. Faith is volunteering her nursing skills aboard Africa Mercy, the world’s largest charity hospital ship, operated by Mercy Ships. During her two month tour-of-duty in Conakry, Guinea Faith is part of the team running the ship’s eye clinics. She says the most impacting experience she has had during her service in Africa has been seeing the eye bandages come off her first patient the day after surgery. She watched her patient’s face simply light up as she realised that she could see again. Faith is the day-of-surgery eye nurse and

does patient screening, pre-operative and post operative care. “Onboard, my role is to put the necessary eye drops in prior to surgery - to anaesthetize the eye, then dilate the pupil, then a drop to sterilize. I also help gown up the patients, take their blood pressure and temperature, and wait with them for the call to theatre.” The mercy ship Africa Mercy is two football fields long, seven stories high and provides a unique transportable healthcare platform for the crew to treat the poorest of the poor in the devel-oping nations of Africa’s West Coast. A steady stream of Kiwi volunteers help provide the health care services onboard for 70 patients at a time in general and intensive care wards, and the ship’s six operating theatres.

of the Year award for the third time.Nelson Airport Ltd is New Zealand’s fourth busiest airport with over 800,000 passengers a year, putting it in the major airport category at the NZ Airports Awards dinner in Christchurch on Friday night. Nelson is the only airport to have won the Interspace Airport Cup three times in 2008, 2010 and now 2012.Chief executive Kaye McNabb says she was “absolutely gobsmacked” with the win.“It’s a huge team effort from a very small team, but it’s only made possible by the co-operation and attitude of all of the other businesses that contribute to the atmosphere and service that makes Nelson Airport so successful,” she says. Judges considerations included Nelson Airport Ltd’s considerable contribution to aviation business growth through the Top of the South Aviation Strategy and its contribution towards regional and national economic growth. Work with NZ Airports Association, Ministry for the Environment and local councils on environmental effects and risks for the airport were also noted. Nelson Airport’s relationship with its community, and in particular its support for the Heart of Biking Cycleway trail, impressed the judges who made particular mention of the fruit tree planting initiative in their comments.

Nelson's iconic hanging flower baskets are ready to go up, and with 800 baskets set to bloom expect a colourful array on our streets this summer. The vibrant show will be put up next week, and will take up to 30 volunteers a day and five days to complete, and that’s just the planting and hanging of the baskets. The tradition began 12 years ago, and lo-cal businesses and the public show a huge amount of support each year, either buying a basket for outside their shop or volun-teering their time to help plant them, says Nelmac. The project is implemented by the Nelson City Council and overseen by Mike Gafa, team leader at Nelmac nursery who has been with the hanging baskets project since it all began, and he says the baskets are all about bringing Nelson’s “streets to life” for the summer season.Planning for the arrangements started back in May, when last season’s flowers were coming down and turning to com-post, Nelmac Nursery staff began their busy selection process for the season ahead, deciding on what flowers to use for the bright displays.Mike says that after years of putting the project together, the team has used a bit of kiwi ingenuity to deliver the colourful show for the community, creating tools,

and growing the plants chemical free to ensure sustainability. “Each year we look at efficiencies, how we can do things better, we are the only people that use biodegrad-able pots, and we have created our own potting mix. We put a lot of thought into our own innovations to make the job run

really smoothly and sustainably.”Mike says the idea is all about bringing smiles to faces in Nelson, and people al-ways look forward to seeing the flowers up.“The best part for us is not only the com-ments ‘oh are you taking the flowers down?’ at the end of the season, but at the

start of the season when people say ‘ when are you putting the flowers up?’ that’s the most exciting thing.”The many volunteers will begin planting the flowers on Monday, and the hang-ing flower baskets should be gracing the streets by the end of next week.

Nelson’s finest young dance crew got some star power advice just days before jetting off to the World Hip-Hop Unite Championship in the Netherlands.Chart topping boy band Titanium were in town on Saturday and with them was solo artist J Williams, himself a former Hip-Hop Unite attendee. Origin were invited to perform alongside their idols

at Nelson College over the weekend and got some key feedback from J Williams.Origin has been together in its current format for the past year and features Bride-Rose Downing, Hayley Bar-nett, Jorgia Marsh, Hana Morris, Melia Wilkins, Lucy Everett and Ashley Belk. They are coached by Gemma Laing.Lucy says performing alongside Titani-

um and J Williams was the “best thing” the group had ever done. “It was good because it was serious but we were able to have some fun as well. He [J Wil-liams] actually asked us to perform our world’s set, which was amazing that he asked us. He really enjoyed it.”Melia, who is also the group’s choreogra-pher, says they were relieved to be finally

going to the world championship after weeks of rigorous training. She was confident that they would perform well. “We had 16 hours of training last week between four days so once we leave I hope it’ll all be worth it,” she says. “We’re not going there to lose. We’re going to try our darn hardest to come back with a gold medal.”Origin will be the only New Zea-land crew in the junior category, which is for competitors aged be-tween 13 and 17 years old. If they get through all of the rounds, making it into the final eight, the dancers would have performed the same two minute routine six times. There are between 40 and 50 teams competing in their grade in Dordrecht.Origin is also through to the next round of New Zealand’s Got Talent and has been selected to perform at Coca Cola Christmas in the Park.

can prepare plans, have them consented by the council and then either oversee the project or undertake the construction, calling on specialist trades to ensure a truly professional finish.

Hello to all you busy gardeners,The last few days have really felt like spring is finally here! I am sure that the low hum I hear when working outside is the sound of the grass growing, it seems to get longer by the hour, but it could well be the bees very busy at work. There appear to be a lot more of these little critters around this year - the viburnums seem to vibrate with the number of bees working the flowers. It has to be the most fragrant time of the year with narcissi, hyacinths and freesias competing with boronias and viburnum for top spot in the perfume stakes!

Unfortunately, the downside to all this growth is that the weeds also join in and I am having a rather difficult time dealing to what can only be called an outbreak of feral radishes….yes, you did read this correctly, I am plagued with the whole back garden bed being covered by radishes. I can only think that they must have come with a load of compost

and mulch that I procured 2 years or so ago and have just been lying in wait for the perfect season to erupt! It wouldn’t be so bad if we actually liked radishes but neither “he who digs holes” or myself are at all keen on these windy little vegetables. The good thing is they are quite easy to pull out but I

fear we will be seeing them for many years to come.

With the start of a new season I decided to go and visit one of our local growers to update myself with any new and exciting happenings out there in nursery land. I am not sure whether or not you are aware that we have several major wholesale plant nurseries located in our region. If you see the plant you buy sporting a Vibrant Earth logo, a Thirkettles tag, a Waimea nursery or Titoki label or even an Appletons tag these plants have all been raised and nurtured by local growers in our own region. This means several things but I guess the main one is that they have all been raised in this climate, have wintered over in our area, and in many cases have been bred to really

thrive in the Nelson/Takaka region. These growers also supply good numbers of plants to garden centres all over the country. My visit to Vibrant Earth was exciting and I came away with a very good feeling about the work being done here. There are so many plants it would be impossible to list but some of the stand-outs are the wisterias that were mainly in full bud and are now out in the garden centres. The hybrid clematis – many varieties including “macropetala” lagoon with it’s beautiful deep blue lantern flowers, and “Louise Rowe” which has, semi double pale violet flowers and loves to climb through trees.

Hydrangeas - a great selection of colours; and hydrangea Quercifolia “Pee Wee” which is a smaller more compact version and has wonderful autumn foliage with good size white flower heads.Look out next season for Loropetalum “Firedance” - a real stunner and Ligularia “Przewalskii” which grows to around 1.5 mtrs tall is great in the back of a border. The website is www.vibrantearth.co.nz and it is set up so you can easily find your way

around. They offer a selection of plants to suit your garden type i.e. Native, easy care, English, etc and I have spent some time on this and found it really user friendly. They also tell you who stocks the plant and have many helpful hints on planting and care.

• When planting hybrid clematis always plant deep. You can safely bury the first

2 nodes in the planting hole, as they need to be kept firm in the ground. The stems of clematis are pliable and easily broken so care is needed and a stake or bamboo rod is a good idea. They can suffer from root rot so I recommend you use a Kiwi care product when planting called ‘’No root rot die back”. Once established they are well worth the effort and will flower in spring and again in autumn for many years.

• Time to redo your hanging baskets with lobelias, petunias, ivy leaf geraniums, alyssum, etc for a colourful summer display.

• You can also grow vegies in baskets; buttercrunch lettuce, parsley, spinach, snow peas and hanging cherry tomatoes all do well as do strawberries- just give it a go!

• Cut fuchsias back by at least 2/3rds to encourage growth and check for rust on the old leaves.

• Trim hedges before they get too much growth on them, especially formal type hedges.

IN THE FIRING LINE: Wakatu’s Shane Laurence in action during Saturday’s Nelson Cricket Association two-day opener against Sprig & Fern Tavern Motueka. Motueka was looking strong with the bat and currently sit at 235/7 after 66 overs courtesy of half centuries to Kurt Pahl and Duncan Cederman. Bud Jackson has collected three wickets with Shane bagging two. In round one’s other matches Harrington’s Beer Café Waimea Toi Toi United face Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers and Car Company Stoke/Nayland face Athletic College Old Boy’s. Day two will begin this Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Athletics Nelson completed its best ever finish at the New Zealand Road Relay Championship but if it wasn’t for a heartbreaking injury on the final leg of the Men’s Over 50 race, the club could have been celebrating an overall first placing.Athletics Nelson finished second overall on points, behind eventual winners Wellington Scottish. The Nelson teams came from behind in both the men’s masters 40-49 and over 60 grades to take the club’s two gold medals on the Upper Moutere course. The masters 40-49’s hopes were left to Phil Costley, who has 31 national titles to his name. Phil sneaked up to his competitor in the final 200m to win by just three seconds, despite having two minutes and 40 seconds to catch up on the clock when he was tagged in at the last relay exchange. The relay team also featured John Kennedy, Ian Thomas, Jon Linyard, Stu Cottam, Graeme Taylor, Neil Whittaker and Peter Versey. But the men’s 40-49 team were not the only locals to leave it late with the first ever Athletics Nelson men’s over 60 relay also waiting until the final leg to push in front. Race organiser Ian Morrison was one minute and half behind before he was tagged in but managed to create a similar margin on his opposition from Wellington Scottish as the team finished the 39.49km course in two hours 21 minutes and 11 seconds. The men’s over 60 team also included Chris Bolter, Barry Dewar, Derek Shaw and Hugh Neill.

But there was heartbreak for the men’s over 50 team, who saw national cross country champion Cliff Bowman surrender to a leg injury, holding an eight minute lead on his nearest challenger on the last leg of the race. Greg Lautenslager, running his first serious race in six years, had got the team into the lead early after Ian Courtenay and Tim Cross had gone before him. Bill Revell, Patrick Meffan, Murray Hart and Dave Dixon kept the

pace knowing they had a trump card in Cliff as the last runner. Competition rules allow for another runner to take the place of an injured competitor so the team could finish the race. However, the men’s over 50s were forced to take the seven minute time penalty that goes with the exemption. Nelson’s final runner was first across the finish line but Auckland University and Lake City Rotorua completed the 71.67km course before the penalty had stopped. Athletics Nelson had to be content with a bronze medal.

North Panthers for the Challenge Cup. Also that night the TQ Midgets have the first of their three round Club Championships and Production Saloons are running a Best Pairs. The following meeting on 24 November sees the mighty Sprintcars make their return to Nelson, with a round of the War of the Wings being held here again. Being early in the sea-son a full field of top competitors is expected. The Sprintcars are supported by the Midget Club Champs, the Mark Thorn Memorial for Sidecars and the Stockcar triple. The Tigers get their second home track out-ing of the season when the mighty Welling-ton Wildcats return on 8 December after many years in hibernation. This will be a hard fought battle with both teams keen to start with a win in what is hoped will be an ongo-ing challenge. The following meeting on 15 December features what is becoming a must

see event for Super Saloon fans, the Elf Super Cup. Early indications are that the number of entrants is up on last season and could reach as many as 20. The final meeting of the year is on 29 Decem-ber and will see the TQ Midgets, Superstocks and Sidecars all competing in their respective club championships.A small break over New Year gives the club the time to focus on hosting the New Zea-land Home Loans NZ Superstock Champion-ship on 11 and 12 January. The Superstock Champs is the jewel in the speedway crown and Nelson last hosted it in 2003/04. most talented drivers in the coun-try and there is definitely a real op-portunity to crown a home track champion. The other major promotions that round out the rest of the season are the Classic Hits Demolition Derby, the Sturgeons Amusements King of the Clay, the two day Stanaway Roading Stock Shock, Stockcar teams racing between the Tasman Thunder and the Grey-mouth Grizzlies and the return of the Winged Warriors-Modifieds. There are a number of support promotions planned to comple-ment the main events and to en-sure that fans of all classes leave every meeting happy. Some class-es are introducing alternative for-mats to traditional events such as their club championships in an ef-fort to continue to attract the fans and hopefully a few more visiting drivers. Our youngest members haven’t been forgotten and the Burger King Junior members club has some fun things planned for you. Make sure you get along to the souvenir shop and sign up. There are plenty of Coca Cola goodies hidden away to give out on fireworks night and plans are already under way for your Christmas party. This season the club has also made

changes to ensure that every tum-my also leaves fully satisfied with new food vendors trading inside the arena, providing such delights as baked potatoes, nachos and fresh coffees. You can still enjoy a traditional hotdog and chips or a selection of hot foods from the McCall shop as well as cold drinks, ice cream and confectionery. We have had to make a slight in-crease to gate prices but, in an ef-fort to ensure families do not have to miss their night out, these have been made to members and pen-sioner prices which have increased to $10. Adults are still $15 and a family pass for two adults and up to three children remains at only $300. For up to date information, photos, gossip etc make sure you join our Nelson Speedway Facebook group or check out the club website www.nelsonspeedway.co.nz. Obviously we hope the weather is kinder to us than last season but in the event of unsettled weather cancellations will be broadcast on Classic Hits and posted on the website.Enjoy your summer speedway sea-son which kicks off this Saturday night at the Tahuna Beach Holi-day Park Speedway in Lansdowne Road Appleby. Nayland College has estab-lished itself as one of New Zealand basketball's heavy-weights, securing a record equalling fourth place at the national secondary school AA championship in Nelson last week.Nayland were knocked out of finals contention by defend-ing champions Rosmini Col-lege, going down 87-76 at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night. Nayland then lost to another defeated semi-final-ist Hutt Valley High School in the third/fourth playoff but had strong showings against Burnside High School in the quarter finals after topping pool three with only one loss to its name.It is the second time in just three years the side has made it to the semi-finals and the second time its players have made the tournament's selec-tion squad. Sharpshooter Locky Cam-pion earned individual praise from Basketball New Zea-land but he wasn't alone in making strong performances throughout the tournament. Nayland College coach Chris Tupu relied heavily on a core of six players with young Nel-son Giants big man Angus Ri-ley completing a heavy work load while Scott Cameron and Nathan Dempster were also outstanding throughout the week.

The future looks even bright-er with young guns Jonas Kale and Toma Noguchi making significant contributions in the playoffs while Angus and Locky will still remain as key figures for at least another two years. The Nayland College noise crew gave the team a clear edge with dozens of maroon-clad fans chanting at each fix-ture.The tournament was eventu-

ally won by Westlake Boys High School with its key player, Tall Black Tai Webster claiming the MVP award.Nelson College, who were one game away from reaching the quarter finals before being beaten by Nayland College in the final pool three match, ended the tournament with a creditable 14th placing. Finn Delaney had a strong tourna-ment for the only other home side at the tournament.

Business Update. Adv.

Have a clean, hygienic and pest free summerIt’s timely for business and homeowners to con-sider how best to set up work and the home environment for a clean, hygienic and pest free summer this spring.Carpet Cleaning - Following the winter car-pets are generally at their worst with soiling, stains and ingrained dirt and odour. In this state they’re less hygienic and a potential harbourage for mites, fleas and potentially harmful bacteria and viruses and pose a hazard to asthma suf-ferers and immune compromised people. Have your carpets cleaned for health and to prolong your carpets life - not just looks alone. The only way to clean carpet for health is to use the hot water extraction method. This method involves truck-mounted machines that heat the water to a level that will kill bacteria and virus, flushing carpet from the tip to deep down on the fibre base. Enviro only uses this hot water ex-traction method combined with cleaning solu-tions that have the international CRI Gold Seal of Approval and are biodegradable.Failing to remove ingrained soiling severely re-duces the life of a carpet and the aesthetic ap-pearance drops off rapidly leaving the carpet looking old, dirty and worn with tracking marks in high foot traffic areas. It’s really important to remove this ingrained soil from low down in the carpet fibres to prevent this from worsening and becoming permanent. We often hear from cli-ents that the carpet looked really good for the first three or so years and rapidly deteriorated after this. This is due to the abrasive action of

the fine sand like soil permanently damaging the carpet fibres. Enviro’s technicians are IICRC certified in car-pet cleaning, stain removal, mould remediation, odour control, flood and fire restoration. Pest Control - Springtime is the most effective pre-emptive time for pest control management for flies, fleas, ants and spiders. As the ambi-ent temperatures increase new life cycles start and insect pests become more active and vis-ible. What seemed a minor infestation over the cooler months may turn into a full scale nui-sance or health risk. Early preventative spraying for spiders and flies is the most effective means of preventing a problem developing later in the season. Top four for Nayland basketballers

The Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle hit the ground round with two of its key events being staged on the event’s first weekend. The festival began in the Moutere Hills for round six of the Benchmark Series with two Nelson riders ending Satur-day with the leader’s jersey. The race started from Lower Moutere School.A break was firmly established towards the end of the first lap of the race with most of the teams represented in it, including a strong team from Cycling Otago. The Tasman Wheelers were forced to chase for most of the race to protect the general classification hopes of team leader Chris Nicholson. The third time the race headed down the Motueka Valley Highway the main field had nearly caught the breakaway group but failed to maintain the mo-mentum with the race splitting up in the closing kilometres as a result of the trying conditions. Brad Evans won a close fought sprint finish from Brad Tuhi of the Homestyle Test Team with Darcy Ellerm-Norton of Benchmark Homes Cycling Team third. Chris has moved into the leader’s jersey with Brad, who races for Cycling Otago, picking up the Under-23 jersey and Mark Spessot of Cycle World taking the master’s jersey. The women’s race set off 20 minutes after the men and was slow to get start-

ed. Some aggressive riding from Karen Fulton over the Waiwheros managed to form a break of four. Eloise Fry, who was a last minute ring in for the Otago team, initially tried to close the gap but the group managed to stay away. On the final lap Reta Trotman of Cycling Otago attacked several times over the Waiwheros dropping Karen. There was a close sprint for the finish with Reta just beating Benchmark Homes duo of Sharlotte Lucas and Hayley Mercer. Karen finished fourth and still retains the leader’s jersey. The second key event of the Nelson Cycle Festival was one of its more unique races with cy-clists rounding the Nelson Cathedral for the Nelson City Criterium. Weath-er conditions were a vast improvement from Saturday and the sunshine and the special course drew a good group of spectators throughout the after-noon. A number of cyclists followed up from the Benchmark Series and it was Ian Smallman who took first place in the men’s A grade race followed by Kieran Hambrook and Brad Tuhi. Other grade winners included Fe-lix Laufkotter in the opening B grade race, Wayne Pool in the C grade event, Ethan Batt in D grade and Mike Yate in the E grade race. Shaane Fulton was first place in the junior event. For more on the festival visit www.nel-soncyclefest.co.nz.
