ABYWEST

Thank you to everyone who

supported the $3.0 in 24 MO!

Campaign. This two year campaign

will officially end on October 31,

2016. To date, this campaign

allowed us to pay for the cost of

nearly two of the five floors. Your

generosity has been overwhelming.

As you can see, we still have a way

to go. For those who have not

completed their pledge or who

would like make a contribution to

the $3.0 in 24MO! Please do so

before October 31, 2016.

Contributions can be made by

envelope or online.

In November, we will roll out new

initiatives to reach our goal of $8MM

to complete the entire five floor

community center

We recognize that we may need to

raise funds outside of our church

community; however, we want to

attain 100% participation because we

want others to know our

membership is committed to this

effort. So we continue to solicit

your financial support as we move

towards this incredible contribution

to the future of The Abyssinian

Baptist Church and the Harlem

Community. STAY TUNED!

THE ABYWEST COMMUNITY CENTER IS COMING ALIVE!

As we continue fundraising to meet our $12 million goal to complete AbyWest,

we would like to share preliminary renderings of the Community Center’s

Reception Area and Fellowship Hall.

We envision a space where members can gather and fellowship before and

after worship services, and it would also function as a Hall for special occasions

and events.

We urge you to continue supporting this effort, and remain diligent and prayerful

as we strive to reach our goal.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Your awareness of biblical facts is important for spiritual growth. Take the Bible Quest

challenge and try to answer the questions before checking the Aby church website

http://abyssinian.org/ministry/christian-education/abyssinian-institute-for-christian-

education/ for Bible references to the questions. And, remember to be intentional

about taking time to center yourself, as you read the entire chapter where the

answers are found.

1) Who was the mother of John the Baptist?

2) How did Mary react when the Angel Gabriel told her that she would give

birth to Jesus?

3) What special favor did the mother of James and John (sons of Zebedee) ask of

Jesus?

4) As He hung on the cross, how did Jesus ensure that His mother, Mary, would

be cared for?

OLD TESTAMENT – Passing the Baton: Moses to Joshua

Thursdays 6/1, 6/8, 6/15

7:00 PM – 8:30 PM – Instructor, Minister Pamela D. Mason

The strength of our success today depends on our ability to discern God’s voice

above all else and our willingness to follow His lead. Therefore, studying the historical

Books of Deuteronomy and Joshua are critical for governing our lives

effectively. They provide insights into the relevancy of telling our story, over and over

again to generations that were not present during times of great struggle and the

victories that followed. Take a snapshot in time with us through God’s Code of

Conduct, as He prepared Moses and Joshua to lead Israel and its importance for us

today as we press forward in a new direction for our lives.

HEALTH

TODAY IS NO MENTHOL SUNDAY

Menthol is a flavored substance that triggers a cooling sensation when enhaled. Its

most common use is in cigarettes, as it eases the taste of tobacco, making smoking

easier. Many African American “smokers” smoke menthols, and smoking kills 46,000

African Americans per year. That's more than homicides, suicides, AIDS, and car

accidents combined. Most menthol smokers are women!

Many youth, and African Americans “smokers” choose menthols because of the minty

flavor – that same menthol flavor makes it harder to quit smoking. Young people

who start smoking try menthols first, and menthol cigarettes cost less in African

American communities. There are more and larger menthol advertisements in African

American communities.

The FDA has the power to ban menthol from tobacco products and banning

menthol could save lives. If menthol were banned, people might never smoke and

perhaps many African Americans would not die from smoking‐related diseases. The

tobacco industry intentionally targets African Americans to smoke menthols

through concentrated advertising in our neighborhoods, and by pricing menthols

cheaper in our communities.

A ban on the sale of menthol could encourage African Americans to quit smoking as

the taste would not be appealing. Quitting is not easy, but you can call 1-800-QUIT-

NOW for free resources and coaching.
