Q Grade score Annotation

1 M6

The response is M6 because part (c) explains clearly, as typical for Excellence, but does not have sufficient detail for E7 (though the Fosse Walk functions as an example). To gain Excellence, the answer needs more detail. For example, the candidate could give a specific example of “styles and choreographers striving for lean, symmetrical and graceful lines”. It could also explain further in what ways Fosse Jazz was different from what audiences had seen before, or explain how Fosse’s movements were less conservative.

2 M6

The response is M6 because it has the detail required for Excellence but does not explain clearly. The explanation of how Fosse used his imperfections to create new movements and a new style is unclear and these sentences could be in a more logical order. The explanation of this point seems incomplete. Reader is required to “make leaps” to link sentences and points together. The example at the end would benefit from explaining how the two dances are similar and how Fosse’s influence is seen in Jackson’s work. To gain Excellence the answer needs to explain clearly and in detail.

3 E7

The response is E7 because the explanation is clear and detailed. The topic sentence targets the question and links part (a) with part (b). The answer goes on to explain the topic sentence clearly and in detail. Sentences and ideas are arranged in a logical order that flows. The costume example of Cabaret lacks detail of what dancers wore, but the “Cell Block Tango” example has some detail and clearly illustrates the point about changing roles and perceptions of women in society.

1 E8

The candidate has made an appropriate and judicious choice of non-locomotor movement in mime gestures. This choice enables the candidate to give a detailed response and link the three parts of the question together. The response is E8 because part (c) explains clearly, logically and in detail, the function and significance of mime gestures in narrative ballet including: (i) to tell the story;; (ii) reflecting historical use of gestures in ballet, and (iii) portraying emotions of characters. Each point in the explanation is illustrated by a specific, detailed example. For instance, the first point about gestures telling the story is illustrated with the “Let’s dance” gesture embellished with a small jump. The logical explanation has lifted the response from E7 to E8. Both E7 and E8 require clear explanation illustrated by specific detailed examples that make connections between movements and their function.

2 E7

Part (c) is E7 because it explains clearly, but lacks the logic or thoroughness required for E8. The explanation is supported by a detailed example to illustrate the importance of 4th, 3rd and 1st positions in the pirouette. Parts (a) and (b) describe with some detail (names and dates) in a style that suggests writer is confident in their knowledge of the topic. Note that Excellence requires explanation linking features, or features and background. The assessment schedule does not require description at Excellence, however parts (a) and (b) generally scaffold candidates into an Excellence answer.

3 E8

The response is E8 because each point is explained clearly and supported by specific detailed examples to illustrate the point. The explanation as a whole is logical and thorough. Parts (a) and (b) link with part (c). Read holistically, the answer demonstrates comprehensive knowledge.
