On The Way

The Mass in Slowest Motion: Epiclesis and Consecration Now we come to the most sacred part of the Mass.

We already considered these in general (May 31st). Now we look at them in particular, in the Roman Canon. First, in approaching these sections, the priest fittingly restates our purpose at Mass: Therefore, Lord, we pray: graciously accept this oblation of our service, that of your whole family… An “oblation” (not a familiar word to most of us) is an offering, an object offered to God in worship. In this context, the bread and wine signify the offering of our service – indeed, of our very selves. This oblation will become and be united to the perfect offering of Christ for our intentions: namely, that God order our days in [His] peace, and command that we be delivered from eternal damnation and counted among the flock of those [He] have chosen. The Epiclesis. Then comes the epiclesis, the invocation of the Holy Spirit. The priest holds his hands over the gifts to signify and call down the Holy Spirit: Be pleased, O God, we pray, to bless, acknowledge, and approve this offering in every respect; make it spiritual and acceptable, so that it may become for us the Body and Blood of your most beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the Holy Spirit that makes our gifts (oblation) and our very selves pleasing to God. The Institution Narrative and Consecration. The institution narrative is directed to the Father, not to the congregation. The words of consecration are not to be spoken as a reenactment of the Last Supper, with the priest as Jesus and the people as the Apostles. Rather, it is the high point of the priest’s prayer to the Father. The priest is not to look at the congregation or ex-tend the host and chalice towards them as if it were a dramatization.

The reality is more dramatic: the priest stands and speaks in the Person of God the Son speaking to God the Father. The priest does not say, “This is His Body” but “This is my Body,” because he is at that moment Christ’s instrument to speak the words of Sacrifice.

An important dimension of the institution narrative is the double consecration. The bread and the wine are consecrated in two distinct movements. In the upper room Jesus spoke these words over the bread during the supper and over the chalice later, “when supper was ended.” We, however, bring them right next to each other. But we still maintain their separation. This separate consecration signifies sacrifice: the separation of body and blood. (Note this separation for a later segment.)

After the consecration and the showing of the Host and Chalice to the people, the priest then sings or says, The mystery of faith. Unfortunately, the placement of this has generated some confusion. It sounds as though the priest is asking the people to announce the mystery of faith (the old translation actually said, “Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.”) In fact, with these words it is the priest who announces that this – the new covenant in the Body and Blood of Christ on the altar – is the mystery of faith. The people’s response is not a declaration of the mystery but a faithful response to it. Next Week: the Anamnesis

2020 Fund-A-Cause – Promethean ActivPanel Titanium On Tuesday, June 9th, the PTO raised $16,000 for Saint James School’s Fund-A-Cause. The money will be used to replace the school’s existing active boards with new ActivPanels from Promethean. These boards will provide essential apps and teaching tools at the touch of a button. Whether our students are learning religion, social studies, or STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) these new boards will enhance our student’s ability to learn through realistic and interactive audio-visual experiences. It’s a wonderful investment in our parish school. Sister Mary Sue and Sister Melissa shared why these new boards are needed via this fun video: https://bit.ly/3hBzdXQ If you are interested in helping our school’s Fund-A-Cause, please donate via our General School Support link and write “Active Boards” in the comments section via this link: https://bit.ly/2N8mRIT. A Farewell To Dan Day

On June 23,1990, Dan Day joined the Saint James Community as our Director of Music, on August 1, 2020, after thirty years of tireless service to our Parish, he will officially retire from that position. He leaves behind an outstanding legacy of beautiful music that enhanced all of our liturgies, especially “Midnight Mass, Christmas Day, Holy Week, and Easter,” said Ms. Ginny Beauchamp, a long-time St. James Cantor, and Parish Secretary.

Dan was 12 years old in 1968 when he started playing the organ at his home parish in his native Maine. With musical talent on

both of his parent’s sides of the family, it was no surprise that “Dan sparked to” playing.

Dan holds a Master’s Degree from the Catholic University of America retired from Washington, D.C.’s VA Medical Center in 2017, as a clinical social worker for the Oncology Clinic and Clini-cal Ethics Program Officer. Discussing Dan’s work, our Children’s Choir Director, and Dan’sfriend, Natalie Keffalas, explained: “On the weekend, you would find him at St. James: funerals, weddings, and the Vigil Mass on Saturday; and fourMasses on Sunday. He worked seven days a week for most of his career and commuted from

Montgomery Village, Maryland! Sometimes he’d be stuck in traffic for hours on his way to orfrom St. James. He could probably drive the route in his sleep at this point!”

Through his musical talent and love of the liturgy, “Dan has brought such beauty to our commu-nity and to our Masses with moving pieces that made us feel that we are truly in the presence of the Lord,” said Diane Banister, leader of our Contemporary Mass group at 7:00pm on Sunday evenings. “At times, those voices coming from the loft sounded like angels from heaven.” Chris Hughes, St. James' former Director of Advancement, who is now at the Cathedral of St. Thomas Moore, misses “the look on his face when he played — truly a communion with God.”

Everyone who contributed to this article noted Dan’s kindness as much as his musical talent. From “observing every choir member’s birthday...presenting gifts to all of the choir members at Christmas...and bringing donuts ever Sunday,” to finding the time on Christmas Eve and Christ-mas Day “to prepare a turkey dinner for the Priests and for the musicians in addition to playing the organ for eight Masses.” Natalie explained: “He wanted to make sure everyone was well fed as we worked through the night together.” Everyone who contributed remembered Dan keeping an eye on the congregation from his spot in the choir loft. As Natalie explained: “If he noticed a member of the congregation missing from his or her usual spot in the center aisle, then Dan was the first to check in with the family to make sure everything and everyone was alright.”

Father Patrick Posey, the former Pastor of St. James, noted another element to Dan’s kindness, helping families ensure their loved ones had a beautiful and fitting funeral. “When Dan was scheduled for a funeral, he didn’t just “show up.” He wanted to know about the person, meet the family, and help a soul to heaven with the notes of hope, faith, and love.”

A Farewell to Dan Day (Cont.)

Father Patrick Posey, the former Pastor of St. James, noted another element to Dan’s kindness, helping families ensure their loved ones had a beautiful and fitting funeral. “When Dan was scheduled for a funeral, he didn’t just “show up.” He wanted to know about the person, meet the family, and help a soul to heaven with the notes of hope, faith, and love.” Our former Director of Advancement, Chris Hughes echoed Father Posey’s words, explaining: “What I will never, never forget was how he treated my family after Dad’s passing. He and Father Posey gave my dad a truly spiritual send off — and a gift I can never repay. Dan’s work on the funeral music, his work on the VA memorial were testaments to his belief that our baptismal promise bears fruit. That we are children of God and saved by the sacrifice repeated at every Mass. And that we are worth that sacrifice.” During the celebration of the 25th anniversary of his tenure at Saint James, Dan was asked his thoughts about the parish, and he replied: “The people are serious about spirituality. There’s par-ticipation in daily Masses, Sundays, and feast day liturgies. The parish has a very good commitment to social justice and caring for those in need.” He also said that “one joy of his long tenure has been watching the young people of St. James sit at the keyboard or take up their ba-tons,” concluding that “it’s good to see the next generation coming along to be interested and dedicated to the liturgy.” Mrs. Mary Ann Haines summed up everyone’s thoughts about Dan, by saying: “My appreciation of Dan goes beyond his professional talent in creatively and conscientiously having directed beau-tiful music for Services at St. James over these many years and under many conditions. He is also known for his ready smile, hustle and bustle, keeping the choir up to date on prayer concerns of others as well as following up to see how one was doing, his generosity, enjoyment in sharing stories, sense of humor, enthusiasm for seasonal decorating, contributions of wonderful meals at Thanksgiving for the priests, and keeping his eye out for the rose bushes.” She spoke for all when she concluded, “We’ll miss your spirit, Dan! “I would like to thank Dan for his many years of service to Saint James,” said Father Paul Scalia, Pastor of St. James. “Please join me in prayers and gratitude for his service, and of petition for God’s blessing on him moving forward.”
