West Virginia’s Catholic schools are returning next month with an in-person, five-day plan. Schools Superintendent Mary Ann Deschaine announced the reopening plans in a letter to parents Aug. 3. Families can expect to receive individual school reopening plans soon, she said. “Principals from all 24 Catholic schools across the state have worked closely with their local health departments, school communities and my office to develop plans to allow for the reopening of schools that meet local, state, and federal guidelines,” said Deschaine. Advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics also played a part. That advice urges that “all policy considerations” for the coming year consider health only and start with the goal of “having students physically present in school.” The academy recommendation, stated the superintendent, is “completely in line with the position” of the Department of Catholic Schools.

“Because we are Christ-centered, every choice we make and plans we develop are prayerfully made with our students’ success and well-being in mind. We are a strong Christian family guided by our faith. Our learning environment
will always focus on the social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental well-being of each child.” State officials are urging families to be prepared for changes with little notice, as Covid-19 information is still fluid. This means administrative staffs will monitor local conditions with guidance from appro-priate county health
support systems. Additional details or changes will be shared with families by the administrators in charge of their respective schools. “We will constantly be re-evaluating the health and safety measures in our buildings,” Deschaine said. “We will also be able to turn on a dime and adapt to a remote learning environment if we must. ...We are well equipped and prepared.” The letter appears after the bulletin ads.
“Our learning environment will always focus on
the social, emo onal,
physical, spiritual, and mental well-
being of each child,”

HelpfulHarvesting
Jane Klug and Thomas “Andrew” Andrews, our recent arrival and seminary candidate, took some time last week to pick
cabbage at the Cockayne House garden. The vegetable plot sits adjacent to the historic homestead and across from the high school on W.Va. Route 2. Students from John Marshall typically plant and maintain the garden, with much of the harvest going to the school’s cafeteria. Volunteers are playing a major role in its upkeep this year, and Cockayne House is sharing throughout the community. (According to Jane, the local deer and rabbit community are enjoying the bounty too.) Jane and Andrew dropped off the results of their labors at the Simpson Church soup kitchen.

Baptism Celebrates New Soul
Many events have had to wait during pandemic, but welcoming babies into our parish family is no longer one of them.
Saturday, Aug. 9., Fr. That Son baptized Lincoln Oliver Lyons, who is the firstborn son of Christopher and Rita Lyons. Lincoln’s Godparents are Rory Beck and Rosemary Targosky. He is also the first grandchild of Rick and Robin Targosky. Congratulations to Lincoln and his family.
THE “LIVING PANDEMIC” series start is getting positive responses. Keep an eye out for our next installment about a special church mission.

July 28 letter to the Faithful of the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese, he encourages those of us who have not returned to Mass to consider doing so. He writes: "If you are healthy, go to Mass to hear God's Word with your brothers and sisters in the faith and receive the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist." Please be assured that if you have any underlying medical conditions, we are praying for you every day.
