Ethan

Happy Father’s Day!!

Earlier this week, I visited my cousin Brian (who is a year older than me) at one of his adult league baseball games in Los Angeles. We grew up together, are like brothers, and when I moved to Los Angeles from Delaware, he opened up space in his apartment for me and we were roommates for nearly five years. Time has passed; I am now a priest and Brian has a family of his own with Jennifer and their 3 beautiful children.

While I went to watch Brian’s baseball game, I had the great opportunity to visit with Jennifer and their five-year-old daughter, two-year-old son and new born baby! I had so much fun playing catch with the kids, hunting for pinecones, and cheering on their dad as he went to bat. As the game came to a close, Jennifer had to leave with the kids so they could wind down at home and get ready for bed. I waited around for my cousin and we had the chance to visit for a bit after the game. Brian shared with me that he noticed that his body is not the same today as it was 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. He notices that he gets sore and can’t do all of the things that he used to, and even though he can imagine himself doing those things, his body just won’t keep up. (I listened empathetically, knowing that one day, I too will be as old as he is.)

What really touched me about our visit was that Brian, who has played in adult league baseball for nearly half of his life, isn’t so much playing baseball for himself this time around, but that he wants to give his children this memory of him playing baseball; to be at a game, watch him bat, get a hit, steal a base, and score a run. This desire for leaving behind good memories and a beautiful legacy takes on even more meaning as Brian’s dad, my uncle, Bob died unexpectedly this past February. Brian and his dad Bob had a complicated history, but one that had been reconciled in love. At one of their most difficult moments, Bob drove with his son Brian across the country in a car together because he wanted to make sure they had the opportunity to work out their differences and that Brian knew how much he loved him.

In the scriptures for this weekend, St. Paul reminds us that, “Christ indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised” (2 Cor 5:15) and again, “so whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come” (2 Cor 5:17). As we celebrate Father’s Day this weekend, we thank and appreciate all of those men who have been fathers or father figures in our lives. We are so grateful for those who have stopped living for themselves but have become a new creation in love and find their joy in the growth and development of others.

As Brian’s and my time at the ballpark drew to a close, I had the thought of inviting him out for a bite to eat, maybe grabbing a beer and some tacos, so we could continue our sharing. Before I could extend the invitation, Brian spoke up and said that he had to run home so he could help give the kids a bath and tuck them into bed. Brian is a dad now, no longer living for himself, but in love and joy living for his family.

Happy Father’s Day to us all! May the love of Our Heavenly Father continue sustaining us and encouraging us on our way and may we all be a new creation in Christ!

In God’s love, your Father,

Ethan

Did you know? Foster one-on-one relationships safely One-on-one time with trusted adults is healthy for children and helps them to build self-esteem and long-term relationships. You can protect your child while still ensuring they have time and opportunity to build these relationships. You can drop in unexpectedly when your child is with another adult, even if that person is a trusted family member. Insist on observable outings, in public places. Talk with your child after an outing, noting his mood or her ability to confidently tell you what happened. For more information, visit https://www.d2l.org/education/5-steps/step-2/.
