Each year, Americans observe NationalHispanic Heritage Month from September 15to October 15, by celebrating the histories,cultures and contributions of Americancitizens whose ancestors came from Spain,Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and SouthAmerica. 11. The observation started in 1968 as HispanicHeritage Week under President LyndonJohnson and was expanded by PresidentRonald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-dayperiod starting on September 15 and endingon October 15. It was enacted into law onAugust 17, 1988, on the approval of PublicLaw 100-402. 12. The day of September 15 is significantbecause it is the anniversary of independencefor Latin American countries Costa Rica, ElSalvador, Guatemala, Honduras andNicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chilecelebrate their independence days onSeptember 16 and September 18,respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Da de laRaza, which is October 12, falls within this 30day period. 13. But what does it mean to be Hispanic? 14. Our Nations story would not be possiblewithout generations of Hispanics who haveshaped and strengthened the fabric of our Union.They have enriched every aspect of our nationalidentity with traditions that stretch acrosscenturies and reflect the many ancestries thatcomprise the Hispanic community.
