  • How To Use This Manual(cont'd)Circuit SchematicsCircuit schematics break the entire electricalsystem into individual systems. Only electricalcomponents that work together are showntogether, so you won't be distracted byunrelated wiring.

Each drawing is arranged so current flows frompower at the top of the page, to ground, at thebottom of the page. The "HOT" labels at thetop of a fuse tell you when the ignition switchsupplies power to that fuse.

Each circuit is shown completely andindependently in one schematic Other circuitsgetting their power from the same point, orgrounding at the same point, are not shown. However, if other circuits actually share somewires with the circuit shown, the shared wiresof the orher circuits will be shown too.

wires that connect to another circuit are shownwith an arrowhead poindng in the direction ofcurrent flow. Next to the arrowhead is thename of the circuit or component that sharesrhat \r'iring. You can quickly check sharedviring by checking the operadon of the othercomponents in circuits.

'See Power Distribudon" means there are moreconnections here to other circuits shown in thePower Distribution schematic. "See GroundDistribution" means there are more connectorsto ground circuits shown in the GroundDistribution schematic.

The note, "OK here if Cigarette LiShter works;if not, see Ground Distribution, page 14-1", isa troubleshooting aid. Check the cigarettelighter by depressing it and waiting for it torelease. If the lighter is glowing, the groundcircuit is OK from that point to ground'

  • IHow To Use This Manual (cont'd)Five-Step Troubleshootingl. Vorify The Complalnt

Turn on all the components in the problemcircuit to check the accuracy of the customercomplaint. Note the symptoms. Do not begindisassernbly or testing until you have narroweddown the problem area.

?. Analyzs Th SchomaticLook up the schematic for the problemcircuit. Determine how the circuit is supposedto work by tracing the current paths from thepower source through the circuit componentsto ground. Also, trace circuits that sharewiring with the problem circuit. The names ofcircuits that share the same fuse, ground, orswitch, and so on, are referred to in eachcircuit schernatic. Try to operate any sharedcircuits you didn't check in step 1. If theshared circuits work, the shared wiring is OK,and the cause must be in the wiring used onlyby the problem circuit. If several circuits failat the same time, the fuse or ground is alikely cause.Based on the symptoms and yourunderstanding of the circuit's operation, identify one or rnore possible causes of theproblem.

3, lsolate Th Problm By Tsring Th CircuitMake circuit tests to check the diagnosis youmade in step 2. Keep in mind that a logical, simple procedure is the key to efficienttroubleshooting. Test for the most likely causeof failure first. Try to make tes$ at pointsthat are easily accessible.

    4. Fix Th Problem

Once the specific problem is identified, makethe repair. Be sure to use proper tools andsafe procedures.

5, Make Sur. Th Circuit worksTurn on all components in the repaired circuitin all modes to make sure you've fixed theentire problem. If the problem was a blownfuse, be sure to test all of the circuits on thatfuse. Make sure no new problems tum upand the original problem does not recur.

Test EqulpmentCAUTION: Mosl clrculti Includ. 3olld-itat.devlces. Test the voltrgs In thesa clrcult8only with a lo-m.geohm or hlghellmpedanc. dlgltal multimeler. Nevat u3 aiest light or rnalog meler on clrcuils lhatconlaln solld-ttat. dvlces. Damage lo lhcdovlcas may resull.

Test Llghl and DVOMOn circuits without solid-state devices, use a testlight to check for voltage. A test light is madeup of a 12 volt bulb with a pair of leadsattached. After grounding one lead, touch theother lead to various points along the circuitwhere voltage should be present. The bulb willgo on if there is voltage at the point beingtested. If you need to know how much voltage ispresent, use a digital volt ohmmeter (DVOM).

Selt-Powred Test Llght and DVOMUse a self-powered test light to check forcontinuity. This tool is made up of a light bulb, battery, and two leads. To test it, touch theleads together: the light should 80 on.

Use a self-powered test light only on anunpowered circuit. First, disconnect the battery,or remove the fuse that feeds the circuit you areworking on. Select two points in the circuitbetween which you want to check continuity.Connect one lead of the self-powered test lightto each point. If there is continuity, the testlight's circuit will be completed, and the lightwill so on.

    Soll-Powar.d To3t Llght

  • If, in addition, you need to know exactly howmuch resistance there is between two points, usea DVOM.In the 'OHMS" range, the DVOM will showresistance between two points along a circuit.Low resistance means good continuity.Diodes and solid-state devices in a circuit canmake a DVOM give a false reading. To check areading, reverse the leads, and take a secondreading. If the readings differ, the component isaffecting the measurement.

Jumper wlrcUse a jumper wire to bypass an open circuit. Ajumper wire is made up of an in{ine fuse holderconnected to a set of test leads. It should have afive ampere fuse. Never connect a jumper wireacross a short circuit. The direct batterv shortwill blow the fuse.

Short Flndr (Short Citcuit Locaier)Short finders are available to locate shons toground. The short finder creates a pulsingmagnetic field in the shorted circuit which youcan follow to the location ol the short. Its use ise:plained in the following troubleshooting tests.

    Short Flndar

When testing for voltage at a connector withoutwire seals, you do not have to separate the twohalves of the connector. Instead, probe theconnector from the back. Always check bothsides of the connector because dirty, corroded, and bent terminals can cause problems (noelectrical contact = an open),

    1. Connect one lead of the test light to a knowngood ground, or, if you're using a digital voltohmmeter (DVOM), place it in theappropriate DC vols range, and connect itsnegative lead to ground.

Connect the other lead of the test light orDVOM to the point you want to check.

If the test light glows, there is voltagepresent. If you're using a DVOM, note thevoltage reading. It should be within one voltof measured battery voltage. A loss of morethan one volt indicates a problem.

NOTE: AhYrys us a DVOM on hlghlmpedsnce clrcults, A t.st llChtmay nol glow (even with brtteryvollago prsent).

  • lgnition System (conrd)- How the Clrcult WorksWith the ignition switch in RUN or START, voltage isapplied to the ignition coil and the igniter unit. Asthe distributor shaft tums, the igniter acts as a switch tocontrol current llow through the primary winding of theignition coil. When the current flow through theprimary winding is stopped, a high-voltage current isinduced in the scondary winding of the ignition coil. The high-voltage current flows through the distributorcap, and rotor to the proper spark plug.

. Do not u3a aleclricel lct aqulpm6nl onihc yellow SRS wlree and connecioB Inlhc slearlng column, con3ole, endd8shboerd. You could unlnlntlonally sototf the rirbag, which could cause injury toyou and othara.

The cruise control system uses mechanical andelectrical devices to maintain vehicle speed at asetting selected by the driver.

Syslem DescrlpilonThe cruise control unit receives command signalsfrom the cruise control main switch and thecruise control SET/RESUME switch. With theignition switch in RUN or START, voltage isprovided to the cruise control main switch. Whenthe ON switch is depressed, power is provided tothe cruise control unit and the brake switch. The cruise control unit receives informationabout operating conditions from the brakeswitch, the ignition coil, the speed sensor, andthe clutch switch (manual transmission) or theshift position sensor (automatic ransmission). The cruise control unit then sends signals to thecruise control actuator which regulates thethrottle position to maintain the selected speed. The control unit compares the actual speed ofthe car to the selected speed. The control unitthen uses the result of that comparison to openor close the throttle. The brake switch releases the system's conuol ofthe throttle at the instant the driver depressesthe brake pedal. The switch sends a signal to thecontrol unit by removing power from thenormally closed brake input (GRY wire), andproviding power at the normally open brakeinput (GRN/WHT wire). The control unitresponds by allowing the throttle to close. Theclutch switch (manual transmission) or the shiftlever position switch (automatic transmission)sends a disengage signal to the control unit thatalso allows the throttle to close.

The cruise control system will set andautomatically maintain any speed above 30 mph(45 km/h). To set it, make sure tlre main switchis ON and the switch indicator is ON, Then, after reaching the desired speed, press the SETswitch. The cruise control unit receives a SETsignal and, in tum, controls the cruise conrolactuator to maintain the set speed. When the SET swftch is depressed and the cruisecontrol system is on, the "cruise conEol" ONindicator lights up.You can cancel the cruise control system bytuming the main switch off. This removes powerto the conrol unit and erases the set speed frommemory. If the system is disengaged temporarilyby the brake switch, clutch switch, or gearselector switch, and vehicle speed is still above30 mph, press the RESUME switch. With theRESUME switch depressed and the set memoryretained, the car will automatically return to thepreviously set speed. For gradual acceleration without depressing theaccelerator pedal, push the RESUME switchdown and hold it there until the desired speed isreached. This will send an acceleration signal tothe control unit. When the switch is released, thesystem will be reprogrammed for the new speed. To slow the car down, depress the SET switch,This sends a deceleration signal to the controlunit causing the car to coast. When the desiredspeed is reached, release ihe SET switch. Thisreprograms the system for the new speed.

  • - How the Circuit WorksBattery voltage is supplied through fuse 37 to theblower motor relay contacts at all times. With theignition switch in RUN, voltage is applied to the coil ofthe blower rnotor relay through fuse 13 and the relayenergizes, providing power to the blower motor. Theblower motor ground path is completed when theblower switch is turned to positions LO, M1, or M2.The ground path includes one or more of the blowerresistors. As the switch is moved from LO through M2,resistors are bypassed. Decreasing the resistance willincrease the voltage across the blower motor. Thisincreases the blower motor speed. When the blowerswitch is moved to the HI position, all of the resistorsare bypassed and the blower motor runs at full speed.

Coolent Tempar.tura rnd Fuel GaugesThe coolant temperature gauge and the fuelgauge are each operated by two intersecting coilswound around a pennanent magnet rotor. Whenvoltage from fuse 15 is applied to the coils, amagnetic field is generated. This causes the rotorto rotate and the gauge needle to move. Themagnetic field is controlled by the sender. As theresistance in the sender varies, current throughthe gauge coils changes. The gauge needle movesaccording to the changing magnetic field. The coolant temperature sending unit's resistancevaries from about 142 ohms at low enginetemperature to between 49-32 ohms at hightemperature (radiator fan running). The fuel gauge sending unit's resistance variesfrom about 5 ohms at full to about 110 ohms atempty. Damping oil sunounding the fuel gaugekeeps the gauge needle at the level last shownwhen the ignition was tumed off.
