SILK ROAD: MUSICAL CARAVAN

Recognized as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso and leading ambassador of Chinese music, Wu Man has carved out a career as a soloist, educator and composer, giving her lute-like instrument — which has a history of over 2,000 years in China — a new role in both traditional and contemporary music. Through numerous concert tours, Wu Man has premiered hundreds of new works for the pipa, while spearheading multimedia projects to both preserve and create awareness of China’s ancient musical traditions. Her adventurous spirit and virtuosity have led to collaborations across artistic disciplines, allowing Wu Man to reach wider audiences as she works to break through cultural and musical borders. Wu Man was named Musical America’s 2013 Instrumentalist of the Year, marking the first time this prestigious award has been bestowed on a player of a non-Western instrument. She is the first artist from China to perform at the White House.

“If you’re in the market for a guided introduction to the pipa, the pear-shaped Chinese lute, you could

hardly ask for a more virtuosic or enchanting instructor than Wu Man.” — San Francisco Chronicle

SHASHMAQAM“

Country of Origin: TAJIKISTAN-UZBEKISTAN

Shashmaqam is a vibrantly colorful ensemble that performs the powerful, centuries-old musical traditions of Central Asia. Based in New York City, the ensemble specializes in the classical and folk music of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as well as the liturgical repertoire of Bukharan Jews. Their music reflects the diverse cultures of the region, the most distinctive element of their sound being the dramatic and disciplined vocal tradition.

“Shashmaqam brings to life the rich and diverse musical traditions of Central Asia, where Jewish and

Muslim musicians long co-existed in a flourishing cultural symbiosis.” — NAIRD Notes

Originally from Damascus, Syria, vocalist Gaida is celebrated for her unique and highly personal musical style, which is marked by a great emotional intensity. Known as the “Syrian Nightingale,” Gaida evokes the emotional storminess of such legendary singers as the Algerian Warda and the Egyptian chanteuse Om Kalthoum but is recognized for her remarkable ability to masterfully improvise and expand on the traditional Arabic maqam. While Gaida’s songs unite the elegance of Arabic poetry and the refined ornamentation of Middle Eastern vocals, her ensemble, Levantine Indulgence, skillfully executes classical and traditional folk songs from the Arabic repertoire. This exceptionally musical and multitalented ensemble employs the instrumentation of frame drum, buzuq, qanun, dumbek, oud, violin and bass.

“Very few singers are as effusive or charming as Syrian songstress Gaida.” — Time Out New York

ZULAL

WITH SPECIAL GUEST ARA DINKJIAN

In Armenian, zulal means “clear water.” Zulal, an a cappella trio, takes Armenia’s village folk melodies and weaves intricate arrangements that pay tribute to the rural roots of the music. Zulal celebrates the trials and joys of old Armenian village life: girls cast fortunes by the moon’s light, morning smoke rises from the tonir, young brides weave golden threads through their hair as others spin wool into gossip. These images of the past come to life in Zulal’s arrangements, hearkening back to a simpler time, providing tokens of comfort in our increasingly complex, modern world.

Ara Dinkjian is considered one of the best oud players in the world. His songs have been recorded by world-famous musicians in 14 languages, demonstrating that music does indeed unite people and cultures. His hit song “Dinata, Dinata” was performed at the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympics.

“Zulal, an a cappella trio of Armenian-American women who refract ancestral folk songs through the prism of the colle-

giate close-harmony group, and do so to spectacular effect.” — New York magazine
