BY BARI AUERBACH S unny Isles Beach Police Chief Fred Maas is earning accolades for multi- tasking… leading “best in blue” officers while simulta- neously serving as interim City Manager until Christopher Russo returns to fill the position on Oct. 15. Maas was appointed interim City Manager following the recent resig- nation of former City Manager Alan J. Cohen. Maas also served as interim City Manager once before following the departure of Russo, who originally served as City Manager from 2000 through 2005 – when Russo left to embark on a career in the private sector. In July of 2012, the City Commission voted to hire Russo back – but in the “interim,” Maas has been happy to help ensure Sunny Isles Beach is managing just fine. to teach the importance and seri-ousness of the job. The campkids learned the same skills wewould use as real lifeguardsincluding Rescue Board training,Buoy Rescues and everythingfrom patron surveillance to learn-ing about daily hazards that couldbe encountered on the beach.

The Junior Lifeguard partici-pants leave this program with anew respect for the ocean and aconfidence about themselves.Another big part of the camp ishelping them understand that forOcean Rescue Lifeguards, it’sextremely important to be a teamplayer. Their teamwork skillswere developed and applied byway of various training scenariosin the camp. Examples of teambuilding activities were: relayraces, swimming competitions andother competitions on land, all thewhile sticking together as a team.Certainly a lot of new friendshipswere formed.

The Junior Lifeguards went onweekly field trips away from theocean and it’s a good feeling tohear them say- they want to getback on the beach, and get in thewater. True lifeguards for life! Weare surrounded by water and thisexperience could be that extraboost in their confidence that mayone day payoff and help someonein need.

He sat on the park bench or wonderinghow it could have happened.

They had known each other for twoyears and he thought they were on a pathto something good.

He had been away for awhileand when he had returned hecalled her. When he told her itwas John calling, she had replied“John who?” He was a bit hurtbecause he had felt pretty surethat they were getting closer. Theway she answered made him feelthat he wasn’t attractive to her.

While he was feeling so rejected a prettygirl came by and sat next to him on thebench. Somehow she got him talking abouthow he felt. She looked at him and told himthat he was a very attractive man andshould not feel so rejected. The more shetalked, the better he felt. When she men-tioned that she had a John who was out oftown and he could be her John if he want-ed to, he perked up. She then told him that

since he was so upset she would onlycharge him $50 instead of her usual $100that she charged her other John and he wasmore impressed. He felt he needed her to

feel better and he could becomeher “John.”

All he had to do was make surehe had the right price when hewas with her, and she wouldnever forget that he was her John.

She smiled, gave him her num-ber to call and left. He sat on thebench feeling much better.

She was cutting her price forhim and had said he could be her John. Sheknew his name and was sure she wouldn’tforget.

Someone he had known for a few yearshad already for gotten his name. This girlmade him feel sure she would rememberhim as her “John.”

He got up and ran after her knowing thatshe wouldn’t forget that he was her Johnwhenever he called her.

The city has a code ofordinances providing forfines and other penaltiesthat may be imposed ifsomeone is caught“breaking the rules.” Butperhaps the following

regulations should be added to helpdeter flagrant violations like these:

• Too short shorts: A person at the gymwearing shorts barely covering their bot-tom is working out on the hamstring curlmachine leaving nothing to the imagina-tion - except why in the world they wouldchoose to visually traumatize all the othermembers who have to see what should behidden!

Suggested Fine: Paying a personalshopper to help choose appropriate attire.

• Horn abuse: The light turns green andbefore you can put your foot on the gaspedal, the Red Bull drinking driver in thecar behind you leans on the horn to“encourage” you to peel out like MarioAndretti.

Suggested Fine: Making the impatientdriver wait at the light that takes forever toturn green for at least four or five cycles.

• Medication mixups: The doctoraccidentally gives you a prescription formedication in a pill form - not realizingit only comes in a liquid - but the phar-

macist refuses to give you the liquidbecause the prescription is for the pills(that don’t exist) and says you’ll have towait for the doctor to authorize thechange.

Suggested Fine: A course in red-taperemoval at Government Center, where youcan get permits faster than most pharma-cies fill prescriptions!

• Shoddy repairs: Your car breaksdown the day after you get it back from themechanic.

Suggested Fine: Making the mechaniccome and wait for the tow truck; go to therental car agency and pay for an uglyHyundai - plus the expense of extra insur-ance, the extra-strength Tylenol for yourheadache that’s now in overdrive and thetension relieving massage you’re going toneed from a local spa.

• Slow service: After waiting a longtime for your meal at a restaurant, you startto think the hidden agenda is to make din-ers so hungry that when the food comes,no one will really care if it doesn’t tastethat good.

Suggested Fine: Making the chef haveto listen to the complaints of every crankycustomer and crying kid.

Fortunately, in this jurisdiction, resi-dents are law abiding citizens appreciat-ing public safety in Sunny Isles Beach -where enjoying life in the city is the lawof the land!

When you feel let down it is oftenbecause you had expectations and madeassumptions about your relationships andyour situations, which is normal.

When you feel let down you haveoptions about how you will react. Youmight get upset or angry. You might feelhurt. You might fume and seethe anddeclare, “It’s unfair” or condemn the personor persons involved. You might choose toconfront the person or situation. Before youdo, consider their possible reactions andyour reaction to what they might say. It ispossible to make matters worse. You run therisk of being hurt even more. Ask yourself ifyou want them to know that they hurt you, disappointed you or let you down. Thenask yourself what you hope to achieve. Doyou want an apology or the promise that itwon’t happen again? Or do you simply want

to vent? Consider the fact that any con-frontation can alter or perhaps end the rela-tionship, the friendship, or the job.

When you feel let down, it usuallymeans that you misjudged the nature of therelationship. You assumed that it was differ-ent than it was. It tells you that you hadhopes and expectations and that you wantedsomething. If you did not want somethingfrom the person or the situation you wouldnot feel let down or disappointed. It showsyou your own needs.

When you feel let down you might betempted to carry a grudge with all of thepainful, negative feelings that go with it. Agrudge is far too heavy to carry. It will onlyhurt the person carrying it. Realize that andlet go of any resentment and bitterness youfeel. A grudge will only exhaust you andsap your life force and joy.

It is better to examine and acknowledgeyour own needs. Find alternate ways to sat-isfy them. Alter your persona. You mightfind that you do not need to do anythingabout it at all.Patricia Frank is a LicensedPsychotherapist. She can be reached at305-788-4864.

Associated Press reporter Beth J.Harpaz was right when she recently wrote,“Good luck finding someone who canexplain in 10 words or less what the Warof 1812 was all about.” Some historianswill say it was over “Impressment,” name-ly, that the U.S. declared war againstEngland because the British were wrong-fully seizing their deserting sailors offAmerica’s ships. Well, the British hadalready agreed not to do it again before wedeclared war against England. Some willsay that the “war was a last grasp byEngland to control its former colonies.”The British, however, were alreadyinvolved in a “parallel war” in fighting theNapoleonic Wars in Europe and theBritish public opposed another lengthywar with America. Many historians saythat the War of 1812 “was an attemptedland grab of Canada by the U.S.” There issome merit in that argument as we had

invaded Canada twice; the first time wasduring our Revolutionary War and thesecond time was shortly after our 1812Declaration of War, however, the Britishwon both times. Some say that the U.S.wanted to show the British our greatstrength in our “Second War ofIndependence.” Hardly, as Britain hadsome 600 ships while the U.S. had just 17ships, including Old Ironsides, the mostimportant ship in our fleet.

Were the British horrible in invadingAmerica and burning down our WhiteHouse on August 24, 1814? Well, notquite. The reason they did it was in retali-ation for our invading Canada and ourburning down their White House. Thereshould be no dispute that Andrew Jacksonled the “final American Victory at theBattle of New Orleans,” aided by Jewishpirate Jean Lafitte. Well, not quite, as thewar was already declared over but wordhad not yet reached Jackson and theBritish forces in New Orleans.

Who won the War of 1812? At best, itwas a tie. British forces held someAmerican land, including parts of Maine. Both sides agreed, however, to simplystop the war and go back to the originalborders.

What comes to mind when someone says“Frat Party?” If you’re like most people, you may conjure up images of rowdy late-night bashes in which frat boys and sorori-ty girls are drinking, partying and ultimate-ly trashing said party house. At least that isthe image Hollywood would have usbelieve.

Well, recently I attended a frat party - ofsorts...and I am proud to say it was NOTH-ING like those created for the big screen.

In this case, a handful of frat brothers ofSouth Florida’s Alpha Phi Alpha cametogether to party with a purpose. Hostingthe first annual White Party, the Alphasteamed up with local charity, Kids inDistress. The organization serves childrenand families in need in our community;filling the economic, social and emotionalgaps which unfortunately exist for far toomany youngsters here in South Florida.

A swanky, classy affair which began themoment the valet staff whisked away ourcars, guests were treated to perhaps one ofthe most chic frat parties to date. Therewere no beer-kegs anywhere or collegeboys jumping into pools fully-clothed.

There were no stragglers laying drunk onthe front lawn. There was no one hangingfrom a second floor balcony vomiting on

the people below. There was however, livemusic by saxophonist Randy Corinthian, upscale silent auction items, delectablefood presented by the students of LeCordon Bleu College of Culinary arts and atop notch South Florida view of the oceanfrom the private home of a Broward sup-porter. What fun to be on hand serving asguest host and to see dozens of guestsenjoying a night of music, food, friendshipand community service!

The success of this frat party shouldcome as no surprise. Founded in 1906, byAfrican American students at CornellUniversity determined to build a bufferagainst racial injustice, the fraternity ofAlpha Phi Alpha has a motto that sets thepace for what the frat brothers of todaycontinue to do: Develop leaders, promotebrotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy forour communities.

I would say Alpha Phi Alpha foundingfathers would be proud! The event raisedapproximately $8,000, with proceedsgoing directly to Kids in Distress! I don’tknow about you, but I’m thinking THAT’Sthe kind of frat party Hollywood should bedepicting!

[Developers are erecting super-skyscrapersfor the very wealthy, selling apartments withhelicopter views for massive price tags. Whyeveryone’s looking up; plus, the realities of lifeon the 90th floor.]

Luxury real estate is reaching new heights.Developers are betting big on residential sky-

scrapers, building them at record-breakingheights — with record price tags to match.Changing the skyline in New York, London andDallas, the tallest new residences will stretchover 90 stories, with at least one penthouse ask-ing over $100 million.

In New York, the current chart topper at 870feet is New York by Gehry at 8 Spruce Street, arental building in the Financial District that wasdesigned by Frank Gehry. The 76-story build-ing’s first residents moved in last year, but com-ing soon is a building with residences even high-er up. Under construction in Midtown is One57,a condo building with a hotel that will haveapartments as high as 90 floors up, or just over1,000 feet.

“From here you have all the icons of NewYork,” said Dan Tubb, One57’s director of sales, looking at a wall-size screen that shows a simu-lated view of the upper floors’ helicopter-likevistas. But One57’s moment at the top may alsobe brief: Plans are in place for a nearly 1,400-foot-tall condo and retail complex on the site ofthe former Drake Hotel on Park Avenue and 56thStreet, according to people familiar with theproject.

Historically, many of the world’s tallestbuildings, like the Empire State Building andChicago’s Willis Tower, were built to houseoffices, at a time when people weren’t accus-tomed to living in high rises, and later whenmany city dwellers were heading to the suburbs.Very-tall residential high rises began growing inpopularity 10 to 15 years ago, says TimothyJohnson, chairman of the council on TallBuildings and Urban Habitat. Middle-class andupper-class residents began moving back intocities’ urban cores and developers looked forways to maximize their returns on prime realestate that was growing increasingly scarce andcostly. The phenomenon took a brief pause afterthe terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, when some buy-ers were put off by the idea of living in a build-ing that stood out in a city’s skyline.

But demand for living on the highest floorsreturned within six months of the attacks, saysJonathan Miller, president of appraisal firmMiller Samuel, and during the building boomthat followed, dozens of new high-rise condo-miniums rose in cities around the country. Thesubsequent downturn and credit crisis resultedin many empty buildings and halted construc-tion. Prices have more recently stabilized, par-ticularly on the high end, and an influx of for-eign buyers has absorbed empty inventory inmany cities.

Now, building tall is taking off again, with anincreasing number of skyscrapers including resi-dences. In 2012, it’s projected that 41 of theworld’s tallest 100 buildings will be officespaces; in 2000, it was 85. This time, with financ-

ing for new projects still tight, many developersare focusing strictly on the high end, wheredemand is strongest and profit margins arebiggest. “Land costs in places like New Yorkhave gone so astronomically high,” says devel-oper Donald Trump. “It becomes very beneficialto go up.”

When it opens later this year at 42 stories,Dallas’s Museum Tower will be the city’s sec-ond tallest residential building — the tallest torise in the city in more than 20 years. With 57stories, the upcoming Porsche Design TowerMiami could be the tallest residential buildingin Sunny Isles, Fla., just north of Miami, whenit opens in 2016. (Another nearby project, theMansions at Acqualina, is slated to be similar inheight.) Condos at Porsche Tower, pricedbetween $4 million and $20 million, will haveelevators to carry residents up to adjacentgarages in their cars, as well as glass-walled carshowrooms next to living rooms. In Brooklyn, known for its low-slung brownstones and mid-rise apartment buildings, two new projects arecurrently vying for the title of the borough’stallest, one at 596 feet and the other roughlyfour feet higher; both will be high-end residen-tial buildings.

A number of record-breaking sales over thepast year have buoyed belief that the appetitefor trophy properties is growing. In February, apenthouse on Central Park West sold for $88million. At One57, the 89th and 90th floorduplex penthouse recently sold for $90 millionto an unnamed buyer; another large unit on the78th and 79th floors, known as the WinterGarden, is in contract for an undisclosed sum. Itis asking $115 million. Earlier this summer, aSouth Beach penthouse sold for $25 million, arecord for an apartment there. A 76th story pent-house at New York by Gehry hit the rental mar-ket a few weeks ago with an asking price of$60,000 per month.

Many of the newest residential skyscrapers aremarketing overseas, aiming to attract wealthyforeign buyers. At least 10 units in One57 havegone into contract with Chinese buyers. For for-eign buyers, buying into a newly constructedbuilding in New York is easier than gettingapproval from cooperative or condominiumboards, says Edward Mermelstein, a Manhattan-based lawyer who advises wealthy Russian andEastern European clients purchasing real estatein the U.S. “There’s another level of anonymity,”he says.

At Trump International Hotel & TowerToronto, which became the tallest building inCanada when it was completed earlier this year, roughly 60% of buyers have been from outsidethe country, says Howard Tikka, the building’sdirector of marketing.

The race to the top is happening in citiesaround the world. Soon to open in Tel Aviv isMeier-on-Rothschild, a 37-story building thatwill become the city’s tallest residence, designedby architect Richard Meier. Martin Franklin, thefounder and CEO of Jarden Corp., parent compa-ny of brands including Crock-Pot and Sunbeam, says he decided to buy an apartment on the 30thfloor there, partly because he liked the design andbecause “views in tall buildings are very impor-tant.” One of the building’s penthouses is still on

the market for $50 million.A two-story apartment in the Shard,

London’s tallest building that’s expected to bemostly completed later this year, could hit themarket for an estimated GBP 50 million, orabout $80 million. (The building, which has 10residences, also has offices and a hotel.)Princess Tower in Dubai recently became theworld’s tallest residential building with 763apartments going up 107 stories, or 1,358 feet, according to the Council on Tall Buildings.

Living at 1,000 feet does have drawbacks.Outdoor terraces are generally impossible above40 or 50 stories, because of the wind. Thoughmost of the new buildings have walls of mostlyglass to capture the views, the windows only par-tially open at the highest floors. Experts say thatwhile asking prices go up with every floor, viewsimprove only marginally above a certain height, depending on how tall the surrounding buildingsare. “People are paying for the status and theexclusivity of living on that next higher floor,”says Nancy Packes, a New York-based residen-tial development consultant and marketer whohas worked with many skyscraper developers.“There’s a psychological component to living onhigh floors in a building. Even though viewsdon’t change materially.”

Michael Berman, who owns car dealerships inChicago, moved from the suburbs to a four-bed-room condominium on the 57th floor ofChicago’s 92-story Trump International Hoteland Tower in 2009. Though he was one of thebuilding’s first buyers, he wasn’t interested in liv-ing on one of the very top floors, noting that 30years ago he and his wife lived in a different highrise and often lost the views on a cloudy day.

The one downside Mr. Berman noticed aboutliving in Trump Towers, which houses the high-est residences in the U.S., is that opening thewindows means letting in a swift breeze, and onthe windiest days, the usually ultrafast elevatorsslow down somewhat. “But everything else morethan makes up for it,” he says, noting the build-ing’s five-star restaurant below and optionalhotel maid service.

Thomas Guss, a New York real-estate brokerwho currently has a $39 million penthouse list-ed in a 19-story building, the Centurion, says hetypically warns buyers that the taller the build-ing, the more it naturally sways toward the top.“Not many people think about that until the firststorm comes.” Mr. Guss says a 45th-story rentalunit he owns in the Financial District has viewsof the Statue of Liberty — but waves appear inthe bathtub during thunderstorms. “A lot of peo-ple are very uncomfortable with that,” he adds.

Bart Sullivan, a senior vice president at WSPCantor Seinuk, a firm that handles engineeringfor buildings like One World Trade Center, saysbuilding a residential skyscraper is generallymore challenging than building a tall officebuilding, partly because residential buildingshave fewer internal columns and other core struc-tural elements. Residences also have more strin-gent rules governing comfort for people inside. For example, an 80- or 90-story building cansway between several inches on a typical day,and over a foot during a major windstorm. Tomitigate the feeling of motion, tall buildingssometimes include dampers at the top. Madeeither of steel or tanks of water, a damper isessentially a large mass sitting on a pendulumthat sways in the opposite direction.

Furthering the challenges is the trend towardincreasingly narrow skyscrapers. New York’s

432 Park Avenue, potentially the city’s tallestresidential building when completed in 2016,may also be one of the city’s skinniest, with awidth-to-height ratio that could require morecomplicated dampening techniques. To makesure there are no surprises post-construction,models of tall buildings and those surroundingit are sometimes tested inside mathematicallyaccurate wind tunnels, meant to replicate condi-tions in the real world. In some cases, buildersand engineers also take into considerationpedestrian comfort, to make sure people walk-ing on the street 90 stories below won’t beblown back during windy conditions.

Many of the upcoming high rises includebackup generators to keep elevators running incase of a blackout. Elevators have alsoimproved. At One57, it takes about 30 secondsto be taken from the lobby to the 90th floor.

Developers have also dedicated unusuallylarge amounts of the building’s square footageto common amenity areas. At One57, whichwill sit on top of a 25-story Park Hyatt hotel, plans call for three floors of facilities, includingone private to residents with a fitness center anda library with a 24-foot-long aquarium. NewYork by Gehry has a sprawling lounge aimed attweens, golf simulators, pool with an outdoorsun deck and a Frank Gehry-designed screeningroom. The other new high rise going up inSunny Isles, Fla., the Mansions at Acqualina, will have a Turkish hammam spa, breakfast barand poolside attendants ready to fetch juice orcocktails.

The apartments themselves are also unusual-ly large, some with square footage meant torival stand-alone estates. The Mansions atAcqualina has apartments that range in sizefrom 4,600 square feet to over 15,000 squarefeet, with prices starting at $5.9 million. Thenearby Porsche Tower will have two 15,000-square-foot penthouses, each with indoor swim-ming pools and outdoor kitchens on sprawlingterraces.

Still, it’s difficult to anticipate every conse-quence of building up. Dallas’s Museum Towerrecently came under criticism when a neighbor-ing building, the Nasher Sculpture Center, com-plained that the building’s glass facade cast aglare harsh enough to ruin some of its artworkand plants. “We are sad we have an issue withthat, without a doubt,” says Greg Greene, theco-developer. A local civic leader has beenenlisted to mediate between the two parties tocome up with a solution. Developers fromMuseum Tower say one response they’ve comeup with is to pay to recalibrate 200,000 rooftopcones on the art gallery, which point at theirbuilding, absorbing sunlight. In a statement, aspokesperson for the Nasher said “we believe asystem of louvers or external shading forMuseum Tower offers the most promise.”

In the end, views remain the big selling point.Kenneth Allen lives above the 70th floor inChicago’s Trump Towers. He and his wifemoved there from the suburbs after their kidsleft for college to be closer to the theater,Chicago Symphony and top restaurants.

“I can see Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin,”he says. He watches storms roll in over LakeMichigan. “It’s like National Geographic.”

mary care physicians (PCPs) play in patient care. PCPscan be many things for a patient — their cheerleader, ad-vocate and even their medical interpreter — but most im-portantly, the studies prove that having a strongrelationship with a PCP leads to better quality of life, more productive longevity, and lower costs as a result ofreduced hospitalization, improved prevention and bettercoordination of chronic disease care.AvMed Health Plans, one of the oldest Medicare

providers in South Florida, has embraced a more PCP-coordinated approach to healthcare. The company re-cently introduced CenteredCare®, which puts the PCPat the center of every member’s care.According to Dr. Edwin Rodriguez, Medical Director at

AvMed, this coordinated approach will lead to betterhealth outcomes for patients.“Some 15-20% of Medicare hospital admissions are

due to medication complications,” said Rodriguez. “By

developing a strong relationship with your PCP, you canavoid this.”Louise Schendel, a senior from Margate who visits her

PCP every three months, admits she would be lost with-out the lasting relationship she has built with her PCPover the years.“When I have a problem, I call him and he tells me ex-

actly where to go and what to do. I feel like I have some-one out there rooting for me,” said Schendel, an AvMedMedicare Advantage plan member for two years. “With-out my PCP I wouldn’t have the confidence on where togo and what specialists to visit.”William Pena, M.D., a primary care physician who

practices in Hollywood, often acts as an interpreter forpatients who don’t always understand what a specialistrecommends:"They want us to explain procedures. The best way to

In the aftermath of a tropicalstorm or hurricane

Returning from an evacuationBY RABBI YISRAEL BARON

Before they built thosetall buildings in SunnyIsles Beach, I would lovedriving over the WilliamLehman Causeway at afast pace. There was thispoint, just before the top ofthe bridge, where youcould see nothing but the

sea on the other side. It felt like once you wentover the top, you would fall into the sea. It wasmy own mini roller coaster.

Did you ever drive over the edge of a hill, atbreakneck speed, not knowing what awaits youon the other side? You may do that on a rollercoaster and love it, but in real life having morecontrol is preferable. We would rather stick toa boring routine than step out into theunknown.

We all want to control our destiny. But let’sbe honest. Can we? Is it possible?

Yes. It is possible to control our destiny to acertain extent. On the other hand, there aremany things far out of our control.

The first element to gaining control is to usethe gift of visualization. Humans have theunique ability to see themselves from the out-side, if they chose to. Humans can, with theirimagination, go out of themselves and seethemselves from afar in their mind’s eye. Youcan visualize not just yourself; you can visual-ize your relationships with other people. Youcan also visualize how you use your time andhow you interact with physical objects in thespace around you. Then, after taking intoaccount where you are, you can begin to imag-ine and visualize where you want to be. Then, finally, you can plan how to move from whereyou are now to get to where you would like tobe.

Not always can you realistically get fromhere to there, but nevertheless, you can controlhow you react to the current situation aroundyou. No one outside of you has control overthe way you take in the world around you. Dr.Victor Emil Frankel, the famous holocaust sur-vivor neurologist and psychiatrist, describes inhis book, Man’s Search for Meaning, how hewould not allow the Nazis to take away hisdignity. He did this by exercising control overone of the few choices left to him as a prison-er. He made a conscious choice to visualizemeaning, even in his dreadful situation.

Can you imagine being sold into slavery byyour own brothers? After they thought aboutkilling you? This story actually happened toJoseph as told to us in the Torah. WhileJoseph had no control over his reality as aslave, he chose not to carry any hate, anger, orvengeance. Though a slave, no one couldforce Joseph to feel like he was the underdog.Joseph had his own version of the story. Fromhis perspective, the way he visualized it, hewas there for a higher purpose.

Joseph believed that everything that hap-pens in life is from the One Above and is onlyfor our good and benefit. If we are able to

hold on to that belief, despite that it mayappear otherwise, we can be fortunate enoughto see it with our very own eyes — just asJoseph, who was steadfast in his trust of G-d’splan, merited to see how all his pain and suf-fering was actually for his own benefit.

Joseph had every reason in the world toblame everyone and even G-d for his prob-lems, yet he still held on to his faith in a benev-olent G-d who runs the world. Eventually, hewas granted the ability to validate his beliefs tothe world when he became Viceroy of Egypt. He was now at peace with himself, and thosearound him as he held no grudges. “You mayhave intended for bad,” he tells his brothers,“but G-d had other plans, for the good.”

Do you catch yourself expecting to have theperks of being a winner, while you perceiveyourself, and project yourself to others, as theunderdog? That simply doesn’t work.Instead, take inspiration from Joseph, whovisualized a higher sense of purpose evenwithin his most challenging moments.

Many people, at their moment of opportuni-ty, let the opportunity pass by. They don’t havethe perspective to see the opportunities thatthey hold in their very hands. It is sad to seeit. They don’t suffer as a result of other peopleon the outside. Actually, it is from the insidethat they begin to crumble. They are insecurewith themselves which causes them to fall intothe trap of jealousy, lust and seeking honor. In Ethics of our Fathers (4:21), it says thatthese three aforementioned things destroy aperson. It corrodes the very vessel which con-tains it. Thus, when people play the role of vic-tim, they actually tear themselves down.

In short, to maintain control even in themost challenging times; we must visualize ahigher reality of purpose.

Did you ever noticed, how when the rollercoaster ride comes to an end, everyone is yap-ping and talking as they recount all the detailsof the ride? At that point, they can even replaythe short ride in their heads, in slow motion. The experience took on meaning; preciselybecause it was challenging. Don’t hide yourhead in your lap as you come over the top ofthat roller coaster of life. Putting your head inyour lap doesn’t make your situation change; itwill only give you the illusion of safety. If youtake it all in, face your fears by visualizing ahigher reality of purpose, and embrace yoursituation, you will come out of it a stronger anddeeper person which has gained more control!

“I would say this additional task [serving asinterim City Manager] is about guiding, directing or fostering the work they alreadydo in their respective areas…It’s nothing mypersonal work ethic won’t allow for…I’vealways had one goal in all the years I’vebeen here - and that’s to accept whateverchallenge, request or task that has beenasked of me for the betterment of residentsand the City of Sunny Isles Beach.”

‘ALL-STAR RECORD’Maas co-founded the Sunny Isles Beach

Police Department in 1998 and was namedCaptain and Assistant Chief and then in1999, he was appointed Chief. “ChiefMaas has worked diligently to build thePolice Department up with safer streetsand to establish policies and proceduresreducing crime…He was appointed to theGovernor’s Crime and Violent CrimeCouncil by Governor Jeb Bush; and hasreceived many honors and awards for hisleadership and dedication,” said SunnyIsles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup whilereading a proclamation honoring Maas.

Formerly a college baseball player,Maas has also served as an umpire for theNorth Miami Beach little league and youthbaseball leagues. For “going to bat for thecommunity,” in 2010, Maas was honoredto have the baseball field at PelicanCommunity Park named the “Chief MaasBaseball Field.” Mayor Edelcup noted,“The city wanted to do something to honor[Chief Maas] because he has been the mostbeloved person since the inception of thePolice Department – totally dedicated tomaking sure people feel safe.”

On behalf of the Sunny Isles BeachPolice Department, Captain MichaelGrandinetti added, “Chief Fred Maas hastouched the lives of everyone in thisagency…He has served as Chief withhonor, pride and loyalty. Our officers andstaff [revere] his leadership, compassion

and dedication with his ‘how can I helpyou’ attitude and philosophy.”

‘BEST IN BLUE’In 2010, Maas announced he would be

retiring, but decided to resume his role asPolice Chief just two months later. WhenMayor Norman Edelcup broke the goodnews that Maas would be returning duringa Concerned Citizens Meeting, thunderousapplause rang out. Every month, it hasbeen a tradition for Maas to honor thePolice Department’s Officer of the Monthat Concerned Citizens meetings.

Commenting on the city’s “excellentpolice services,” Maas said, “Over the years, this agency has received numerous awardsand presentations for its Police Department.“All officers wearing the badge for SunnyIsles Beach Police are the driving forcebehind each of those recognitions. They arethe ones ‘making the difference’ in the man-ner in which they serve this community.

“I’m very proud of the fine work anddedication that these officers put forth. Some might say these are ordinary peopledoing an extraordinary job. I say, they areextraordinary people doing an extraordi-nary job!”

Led by Maas, the Sunny Isles BeachPolice Department strives to create pro-grams that reduce the need for policeresponse while creating a safer, more secureenvironment. The department’s quickresponse time (less than two minutes) is oneof its most effective tools in combatingcrime, saving lives in emergency medicalsituations and capturing perpetrators.

Officers have access to emergency life-saving equipment such as A.E.D.’s (heartdefibrillators) and Jet Ski body basketsattached for ocean rescue. Officers are alsodetached to work with other agencies (DrugEnforcement Agency and Federal Bureau ofInvestigation) to resolve problems and sharein asset forfeitures, which in turn createsadditional resources to benefit the city.

Officers patrol the city on motorcycles, jet skis, boats, ATV’s, bicycles, and inpatrol cars. Special programs offeredthroughout the year include Red Ribbon

Week, food drives, Toys for Tots, Kid Fest(including fingerprinting and ID program),the Police Officers Assistance Trust 5KRun, career day, and government day.Crime prevention programs are alsooffered including crime prevention andawareness, identity theft, vandalism, anti-robbery, hurricane preparedness, gun safe-ty locks, vehicle identification, anti-theft“club” giveaways, and fraud and scam edu-cation.

‘SAFE AT HOME’ Ever since the Sunny Isles Beach Police

Department became operational on August1, 1998, residents, business owners andvisitors have appreciated enhanced publicsafety. “When [the late] Mayor DavidSamson first spoke with me, he said hepromised the people the very best policedepartment,” Maas said. “To fulfill thatobjective, I felt we had to recruit commit-ted police officers - and today, I’m proud tosay we have…There has been a significantreduction in major and violent crimes ascompared to [the days before the city’sown police department became opera-tional].”

Shortly after Sunny Isles Beach incorpo-rated in 1997, Maas was hired to help get thePolice Department up and running. Duringhis impressive law enforcement career, Maasserved on the Miami-Dade Detective Bureau, the Crime Suppression team and was aSergeant assigned to the Internal Affairs sec-tion. Subsequently, he was appointed actingLieutenant of the Criminal Conspiracy sec-tion where he served for eight years.

Maas’s extensive resume also includesreceiving numerous awards and accolades;as well as serving on an executive commit-tee linking municipal police departmentswith the Miami-Dade State Attorney’sOffice. He is also often invited to be a mas-ter of ceremonies or speaker at many offi-

cial events such as the 2011 memorial serv-ice for two Miami-Dade police officerstragically killed in the line of duty, whereMaas delivered opening remarks.

Mayor Edelcup presented a proclama-tion to Maas in 2008, honoring his distin-guished service to the city and achieve-ments in the field of law enforcement, pro-claiming October 16, 2008 as “PoliceChief Fred Maas Day in the City of SunnyIsles Beach.”

Maas was also named a Knight of thePontifical Order of St. Sylvester by hisHoliness Pope Benedict XVI - a recogni-tion of the highest level of the CatholicChurch and Archbishop of Miami. JohnClement Favalora conferred this distinc-tion upon Maas on Oct. 7, 2008 at theMetropolitan Cathedral of Saint Mary.

While expressing appreciation for theproclamation, Maas thanked theCommission and stated how proud he isthat Sunny Isles Beach shared in the recog-nition. “This is the first time this awardfrom the Vatican has ever been presented inthe United States,” he said.

‘HOW CAN I HELP YOU’ ATTITUDE “When I came on board as a Captain in

April of 1998 it was like returning to myroots because about three decades ago, Istarted out on uniform patrol in Sunny IslesBeach,” Maas said.

Following the resignation of the city’sfirst police chief, Maas took over the posi-tion and has since helped foster a progres-sive, community oriented style of policingwhere officers get out of the car and interactwith residents and business owners. “Ourofficers follow a philosophy and ideologythat they’re expected to go above andbeyond what is normally expected,” Maassaid. “We’re always striving to achievehigher levels of quality personal servicewith a ‘How can I help you?’ attitude.

Norbert Buchholz celebrated his 100thbirthday surrounded by family, friends andstaff at Jewish Community Services’ (JCS)Congregate Dining Facility at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center. Hegoes there every weekday to participate inJCS’ Congregate Dining Program, which pro-vides him with not only a nutritious kosherlunch but an afternoon of activities and social-ization that enhance his quality of life.

As his daughter-in-law Audrey Buchholzputs it, “He went for the food and stayed for thecongeniality.” Norbert’s son David is con-vinced that his father made it to his 100th birth-day because of this JCS program. “The fact thathe has a reason to get up in the morning and goto a place where there is entertainment andcamaraderie has filled his life and made himvery happy,” he explains.

Norbert has had a fascinating life. Born ina small Polish town which is now part ofUkraine, he had a long and successful careeras a professional puppeteer. An interviewfour years ago related that forty puppets siton shelves at Norbert’s apartment inAventura, a veritable gallery of Americanpop culture and world history. There are EdSullivan, Jimmy Durante and Jerry Lewispuppets. For Norbert, life has blended into

art — and vice versa. His career in puppetrybegan as a part-time hobby in Brooklyn andpeaked with performances on televisionshows in the 1950s and ‘60s.

After retiring to Aventura 12 years ago,Norbert found himself with too much time onhis hands, leaving him feeling lonely and iso-lated. BY RICHARD C. SCHULMAN City Historian

“THE MEANING OF ROSH HASHANAH”

Literally means“Head of the Year,”and is observed in thebeginning of the 7thMonth “Tishri,” as theJewish New Year. Thefirst of Tishri marks

the anniversary of the creation of theworld, which according to traditionover 5700 years ago, this year being5773 and therefore Jewish chronologybegin the year with this day.

The name “ROSH HASHANAH” doesnot occur in the Bible. Instead, it isreferred to as the Day of the Blowing ofthe Trumpet, “Yom Teruah,” the Day ofMemorial or Remembrance and theMemorial of the Sounding of the Shofar.

It is also considered the Day ofJudgment, when all mankind is judgedby the creator and the fate of each indi-vidual is inscribed in the book of life.

ROSH HASHANAH, unlike the sec-ular New Year, is both solemn and afestive occasion. Its joy is spirituallydisciplined by the sacred traditions ofhome and the synagogue. Althoughthe observance of the high holy days iscentered primarily in the synagogue, the home is where the family preparesto meet the New Year, in a spirit offaith, and in a mood conducive toprayer and soul searching.

There are ten days of repentance orobservance ending with the holiest dayof the Jewish New Year, “YOM KIP-PUR,” day of atonement, which isobserved entirely in the synagogue aday of fasting, self denial in food andother physical pleasures is part of thetradition of this “Sabbath of Sabbaths.”

The most characteristic symbol of“ROSH HASHANAH” is the SHO-FAR, or Ram’s horn. The Ram’s hornis used in commemoration of the sacri-fice of Isaac. The last moment beforeAbraham was to sacrifice Isaac, a Ramcaught in a thicket was used as a substi-tute sacrifice. To honor the Ram, Jewsuse a Ram’s horn at religious services.Horns of cows were rejected because

these animals were associated with theworship of the Golden Calf by the chil-dren of Israel in the desert, a sin vigor-ously condemned by Moses.

It is used to call each person to recalltheir past deeds and shortcomings, andto engage in the process of introspec-tion and repentance.

It is mentioned frequently in the Bibleand through the Talmud, and later Hebrewliterature. The “SHOFAR,” was used inancient times to sound alarms, to assem-ble armies for attack and to announceplague or famine. In addition, the SHO-FAR heralded important events such asthe accession of a ruler to the throne, orthe proclamation of a rabbinical edict. Itwas also used to usher in the Sabbath, fes-tivals and new moon and together withother instruments was frequentlyemployed as part of the worship in theTemple in Jerusalem.

The Shofar call “TEKIA GADOL-LA” concludes the day of fasting. Theextended blast expresses the feeling ofthe worshippers that they have extend-ed themselves spiritually during thelong day of prayer and are nowresolved to reach out during the comingyear towards new insights and moremeaningful living.

“Give heed to the sounds of Shofar, the sharp piercing blasts of the Shofar, rending the air with its message, itsportents of heavenly salvation, sum-moning man to his father, to render himhomage and devotion.”

“Renounce ye your sins and transgres-sions, false aims and vainglorious striv-ing, infuse in your hearts, a new spirit tobuild a new earth and new heaven. Heedye the sound of the Shofar, the blast thatis blown, o my people.”

WITH THE COMING OFANOTHER YEAR, ON BEHALF OFTHE MAYOR AND CITY COMMIS-SION, MAY WE WISH EVERYONEIN SUNNY ISLES BEACH, THESTATE OF FLORIDA, OURNATION AND YOUR LOVEDONES, THE GREATEST OF MAN’SBLESSINGS…A PEACEFULWORLD IN WHICH TO ENJOYHEALTH AND HAPPINESS. “MAYYOU BE INSCRIBED FOR A WON-DERFUL GOOD YEAR.”
