LED states for V1.x Small Cell devices
Overview
This topic describes the LED states on the V1.x Small Cell devices.
LED interpretation when using the Iuh interface
The following table describes the possible states for each LED when the Small Cell is
using the Iu-h interface (the interface between the Small Cell and the Small Cell
Gateway) to communicate with the Small Cell Gateway, that is, BSR.enableIuh is set to
true.
When BSR.enableIuh is set to true, the WAN LED follows a 2 step WAN connection
procedure and the WAN OK state is not used.
For Small Cell Release 2.4 onwards, backhaul congestion may be detected while the
SCTP association is established, and may occur during system auto-configuration. If thishappens, the system auto-configuration indication takes precedence.

The following table describes the possible states for each LED when the Small Cell is
using the Iuh interface (the interface between the Small Cell and the Small Cell Gateway)
to communicate with the Small Cell Gateway, that is, BSR.enableIuh is set to false.
When BSR.enableIuh is set to false, the WAN LED follows a 3 step WAN connection
procedure and uses the WAN OK state.
For Small Cell Release 2.4 onwards, backhaul congestion may be detected while the
SCTP association is established, and may occur during system auto-configuration. If this
happens, the system auto-configuration indication takes precedence.

State scenario Scenario description
System initializing 1. Small Cell is establishing IPSec tunnel, or Registering with Small Cell Gateway,
or establishing IuCS connection, or performing auto-configuration, or performing
network listening. System LED is FLASHING.
2. Small Cell is engaged in auto-configuration or self-optimization. System LED is
FLASHING.3. Small Cell has succeeded in establishing IPSec tunnel after initially failing to do
so for longer than 10 minutes; system boot sequence has resumed. System LED is
FLASHING.
System not in service (requires operator
intervention)1. IPSec tunnel establishment has exceeded 10 minute time limit. System LED is
OFF
2. System has a configuration error. System LED is OFF.
3. Location Check or Movement Check failure.
4. System has detected connectivity problems to the CS core network.
Phone/device has active user(s) 1. One or more users is successfully connected through the Small Cell. Phone LED
is ON.
2. Successful call handover from Small Cell 1 to Small Cell 2. Phone LED on Small
Cell 2 is ON.
3. Second and third authorized users make concurrent calls on a closed or semi-open
access Small Cell. Phone LED is ON.
Phone/device has active user(s) 1. One or more users is successfully connected through the Small Cell. Phone LED

2. Successful call handover from Small Cell 1 to Small Cell 2. Phone LED on Small
Cell 2 is ON.
3. Second and third authorized users make concurrent calls on a closed or semi-open
access Small Cell. Phone LED is ON.
Phone/Device has no active user(s) 1. No users are taking service on the Small Cell (i.e. there are no active RABs).Phone LED is OFF.
2. Last authorized user has ended their call. Phone LED is OFF.
3. System shows “System Initializing” indication. Phone LED is OFF.
4. System shows “System requires operator intervention” indication: Phone LED is

Phone/device: phone has maximum number
of users active1. A 4-user Small Cell has three active RABs, and the Phone LED is ON. A new user
makes a call and a fourth RAB becomes active. Phone LED is FLASHING as
long as four RABs are active.
2. A home user with 4-user Small Cell sees Phone LED is FLASHING and attempts
a call. The home user may or may not be given service, depending on which
features are activated, how they are configured, and whether or not a local macro
cell is available. If they are not given service, they may infer that this is due to
capacity issues on the Small Cell.

State scenario Scenario description
Backhaul congestion 1. Small Cell has detected backhaul impairments that may impact user service.
Phone LED is FLASHING and the System LED is FLASHING.
2. A home user may infer that impairments affecting calls during this indication may
be due to congestion in the backhaul. Possible call impairments include dropped
calls and poor voice quality It may be possible for the user to request other usersof the local network to reduce network usage whilst a call is made.
The backhaul congestion may potentially be detected whilst the System is
Initializing, in which case the System initializing LED indication takes
precedence.
The Phone LED provides no indication of number of active users during backhaul
congestion. The Small Cell ensures that the Phone LED indication is correct when
the backhaul congestion state changes to uncongested.
Major hardware failure (return Small Cell to
supplier)1. Small Cell detects RF module tx failure, or BLST failure. Power LED is
FLASHING, other LEDs are OFF.

Small Cell remote troubleshooting procedure
Purpose
This procedure describes how to troubleshoot Small Cells from the HDM.
Before you begin
• Wait at least 15 minutes after powering on the Small Cell.
• Ensure that an appropriate mobile device is available.
• Check that a DSL router (not a DSL modem) is installed.
• Check that the DSL line is working properly.
• Check that the Small Cell Gateways are working properly.
• Check the Small Cell is activated on the HDM.
• Check the BSR.Lcell.operationalState state to determine whether the radio is
broadcasting. To do this, perform the following steps:1. Click Manage from the Devices tab of the HDM GUI to manage the required
device
2. From the Queue Function tab, select Get Parameter Values, then find the
BSR.Lcell.operationalState
(Device.Services.BSR.1.Lcell.1.operationalState) parameter and
queue the function.
3. From the Device Data tab, check the value. Determine whether the value is
enabled.
• Check the parameters relating to location lock and/or national location lock. To do
this, perform the following steps:1. Click Manage from the Devices tab of the HDM GUI to manage the required
device.
2. From the Queue Function tab, select Get Parameter Values, then find the
BSR.lmcMFail (Device.Services.BSR.1.lmcMFail) parameter and queue
the function.
3. From the Device Data tab, check the value. If the value returned is true, the
Small Cell radio is failing because of the location checks of the Small Cell.
