I knew pieces of her life history but was moved to tears when her son added additional pieces to complete her story. She married his father who was also a survivor and they started a life together in America. Those pieces of her early years gave me a greater understanding of the tenacity and perseverance she showed while attending MSH. Her son completed the puzzle of his loving mother when he stated she was Jewish and her caregiver who gave her comfort and love for the last five years was Muslim. “All persons are puzzles until at last we find in some word or act

the key to the man, to the woman; straightway all their past

words and actions lie in light before us.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

I know the end of the day is near when I can see our participants working

on puzzles in the dining room. Each puzzle piece is examined and

thoughtfully placed with anticipation for the end result, the final picture.

Recently, I attended a Memorial Service for a participant who was a

member of the MSH family. I knew pieces of her life history but was

moved to tears when her son added additional pieces to complete her

story. She was a Holocaust Survivor, a child and the only one in her group

to survive by running away and hiding in the woods, then protected by a

Christian family and given a Christian name. She married his father who

was also a survivor and they started a life together in America. Those

pieces of her early years gave me a greater understanding of the tenacity

and perseverance she showed while attending MSH. Her Rabbi said she

was committed to her Temple and her commitment to speak of the Holo-

caust gave me insight into her initial days at MSH when she was searching

for her Hadassah friends to continue her work in the community. Her son

completed the puzzle of his loving mother when he stated she was Jewish

and her caregiver who gave her comfort and love for the last five years

was Muslim.

Rina Bellamy, LMSW, QDCP, FSW’s Director of My

Second Home, was recently elected to serve on the Board

of Directors of the New York State Adult Day Services

Association. Ms. Bellamy brings a wealth of knowledge and

experience to her new position on the Board as she has been

the Director of My Second Home, FSW’s Intergenerational

Adult Day Program in Mt. Kisco, since 2007. Ms. Bellamy has a Master’s

Degree in Social Work from the Graduate School of Social Services of

Fordham University and is a Qualified Dementia Care Provider. She is a New

York licensed Geriatric Social Worker with a specialization in working with

older adults and their families and serves as an adjunct Professor for the

Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Services. She developed

and implemented a research study with the Ravazzin Center for Social Work

Research in Aging at Fordham University and the Helen Andrus Benedict

Foundation from 2005-2006. The study “Reconnections,” measured the

efficacy of using an environment rich with sensory stimulation and

socialization with frail isolated older adults in Westchester County.

Evening Edition continues to build relationships between older adults and children during the intergenerational portion of the program. A tradition has also begun at the end of each activity session to parade the art-work to all the participants and staff.
