Engine. EU Stage IIIA compliant C13 engine with ACERT Technologycombines proven systems with innovativenew technologies to precisely deliverfuel to the combustion chamber. It maintains engine performance, efficiency and durability whiledramatically reducing emissions.

The Cat C13 is a 12.5 L displacement, 6-cylinder, electronically governedengine. Electronic fuel injection isprovided through the well-provenCaterpillar mechanically actuated, electronically controlled unit injection(MEUI) system. A wastegate turbo-charger, equipped with a titanium wheelfor improved durability, combined withair-to-air aftercooling (ATAAC) providesconsistent high horsepower withincreased altitude capability.

Electronic Controller. The engine is governed by an electronic controlmodule designated the A4:E4V2. The controller continually adjusts engine output based on load demandusing a series of sensors located on the machine and engine.

Mechanically Actuated Electronic Unit Injectors (MEUI). The MEUIsystem has been at work in Cat enginesacross the product line with a proventrack record of consistent, durable, reliable performance.

Engine Block and Pistons. The gray cast iron engine block is made of thesame material as the cylinder heads.Wall diameters are thicker than inprevious designs while adjustmentshave been made to reduce sound levelsand increase rigidity. One-piece all-steel pistons are housed within a wet, replaceable cast iron cylinder linerconstructed of high-strength, heat-treated castings. Steel-forged connect-ing rods are larger in diameter.

Powershift Transmission. The 972Hcontinues to use heavy-duty powershifttransmission technology proven onprevious models and currently used upthrough the largest wheel loader builtby Caterpillar – the 994F.The planetary powershift transmissionfeatures heavy-duty components tohandle the toughest applications. Built-in electronic controls enhanceproductivity and durability.

Throttle Shifting Control.Controlled Throttle Shifting regulates engine speed during high-energydirectional changes for smoother shifting and longer component life.

Structures. The articulated frame design of the 972H features a durablebox-section engine frame and rigidfour-plate loader tower that isrobotically welded. Robotic weldingcreates frame joints with deep platepenetration welds and excellent fusionfor maximum strength and durability.

Rear Frame. A full box-section engineend frame with hitch plates at the frontend provides a strong, rigid structurethat resists twisting and impact loads. The result is an extremely solidmounting platform for the engine, transmission, axle, ROPS and otheraccessories.

Spread Hitch. The distance between theupper and lower hitch plates is importantfor machine performance and componentlife. The Cat spread hitch design providesexcellent load distribution and bearing life. Both the upper and lower hitch pins pivot on double tapered roller bearings –improving durability by distributing bothvertical and horizontal loads over a largersurface area. The wide opening alsoprovides excellent service access.

Front Frame. The non-engine end frameprovides a solid mounting base for thefront axle, lift arms, lift cylinders and tiltcylinder. The fabricated, four-plate loadertower absorbs the forces associated withloading, twisting and penetration.

Linkage. The 972H linkage is a single-tilt Z-bar design. Z-bar linkage generatesexcellent breakout force and good rackback angle for better bucket loading andload retention. The Z bars' light weightcompared to other linkage designs allowsfor more payload capacity. Lift arms aresolid steel, providing superior strengthwith an excellent front end viewing area. The proven design offers excellent dumpclearance and reach for exceptionalmatching to on- and off-highway trucks.Rotary sensors, for the tilt lever and liftcircuit allow the operator to electronicallyset detent positions from the cab.

Load Sensing Hydraulics. The 972Hfeatures a load sensing hydraulic systemthat automatically adjusts to operatingconditions to provide only the hydraulicflow required by the implement forimproved fuel efficiency. With the new Priority ProportionalPressure Compensation Valve, implement control is improved over the previous system – raise/lower and rack back/dump can be operatedsimultaneously and fine modulation isrepeatable for improved productivity.Operators will notice enhanced ease ofoperation, more rimpull into the pileand a 20% increase in lift force.

Electrohydraulic Implement Controls.Finger Tip Electro hydraulic implementcontrols on the 972H provide theoperator with responsive, smooth andprecise control of bucket and lift arms. The implement control console alsofeatures a Forward/Neutral/Reverseswitch allowing easy and fast directionalchanges that helps reducing cycle times.

The standard programmable automatickick-outs provide flexibility andproductivity for precise load and dumptarget heights. Tilt, lift and return-to-digkickouts are set by positioning thebucket or work tool and setting a rockerswitch in the cab.

Constant Horsepower. On manycompetitive machines, gross horse-power is constant, meaning that netengine power available for actual work will vary based on demands made from parasitic sources, such as air conditioning or cooling fans. The Cat C13 engine is electronicallyconfigured to provide constant nethorsepower at full parasitic loadenhancing productivity and improvingfuel efficiency.

Separated Cooling System. Manycompetitive loaders use cooling systemsthat pull air in from the sides, throughthe engine compartment and exhaust itout the rear of the machine. The 972Hcooling system is isolated from theengine compartment by a non-metallicshield. The hydraulically driven, variable speed fan draws in clean airfrom the rear of the machine andexhausts it out the sides and top of thehood. The end results are optimalcooling efficiency, increased fuelefficiency, less radiator plugging andreduced operator sound levels.

Planetary Power Shift Transmission.Increases number of cycles per hour. The electronic planetary power shifttransmission with automatic shiftcapability is designed, developed and built by Caterpillar. The electronicallycontrolled power shift transmission allowsfull power, very responsive directionalchanges that have a direct impact onmachine cycle times and productivity. The operator can choose between manualor autoshift modes.

Variable Shift Control. Match transmissionshifting patterns to machine applicationrequirements. Variable Shift Control(VSC) improves shift quality and fuelefficiency in certain applications byallowing the transmission to upshift atlower engine RPMs.

Ride Control. The optional Ride ControlSystem improves ride, performance andload retention when traveling over roughterrain. Operators gain confidence movingat higher speeds in load and carryoperations decreasing cycle times andincreasing productivity.

Aggregate Autodig. Well-received by both experienced and novice operators, the optional Aggregate Autodig fullyautomates the loading process.
